On tap at McGullians.

Pours a nice clean gold with light carbonation and a thick head that dissipates quickly.

Smells of high hops.

Taste is of a good standard IPA. Notes of hops apparent ad well as malts. Hops give it a slight bite that is desired.

Mouthfeel is nothing out of ordinary, not bad

Overall a good run of the mill IPA. Good and sippable.

Was in the neighborhood taking a class at the Historical Society so I went to McGillan's to try this out... drank beer alone at the bar while watching the Women's Brazilian Olympic Volleyball team - wow....they were worth the walk.

to the beer... I wasn't impressed like I thought I should be, but I have to take into consideration that if it's an 1860 recipe, it's not going to be like the 21st century IPAs we love today...

It has been one IPA after the other for me these last several days and I am planning to make this my last so that I may work with ambers for a while. I got this (and two more) in a trade at the Black Angus for half of my sixer of Amber 25.

From the bottle: "American, Unfiltered, Bottle Conditioned Ale"; attributed to "McGillin's Old Ale House" in Philadelphia.

My pour created about a finger of dense, off-white head with good retention, especially in this heat. Color was a hazy orangish-amber. Nose smelled of grassy hops and biscuit malt. Mouthfeel was quite full with its level of carbonation and that combined with the hops made my tongue feel as though I had applied scrubbing bubbles. As I continued to drink, sticky lacing began to appear in my glass. The taste was definitely of hops, but it seemed as though they were restrained, at least in terms of the style. Actually, I liked it that way as it served as a bridge between the softer English IPAs and the much more intense AIPAs. I suppose that it is all in what you are looking for in a beer. I could probably drink several of these at a sitting, while some AIPAs cause me to have to stop and catch my breath. The finish exhibited a nice commingling of the hops and malt. I was very satisfied with my trade!
