pours moderately active, head rises a bit, settles quickly with an under the radar mm lacing. bright deep apricot amber.

nose hints immediately to a very hoppy presence! at least, not expected. taste matches it, but comes off dry, with the hop bitterness fading out fast. not catching the 'sweetness' reported by others, but would've welcomed it. doesn't seem to be what i expected a 'winter' ale would be like. hops must've put the spices to bed...a second taste and i catch a sense of spices, but very subtle. mouthfeel is good...not thick or thin. as it should be. drinkable enough, but it's held back bitterness reminds me of a lower octane version of the Smuttynose IPA...i think i should've bought a few more of these to see what else is revealed. in essence, a subtle powerhouse of flavors. i think my palate wasn't ready to read in between the lines. i'll return to this.

p.s. as i finish it, i am noticing lingering bitterness that i like. the dry disappearance again was a trick. interesting. perhaps a good session brew to see what else is revealed. or mix it with some overly spiced brew.

Had this one on tap at the Stoudt's brewery in Adamstown, PA back on Thursday.

Look: A brownish copper color served in a pint glass. A reddish hue appeared when held to the light. Head was a 2 finger layer of lighter tan foam.

Smell: Aroma was very spicy with the hops creating most of the nose. Also some dark maple, cinnamon and the other usual spices found in most winter releases.

Taste: First were the spices - then the hops kicked in and basically dominated most of the palate. The middle and finish were of more hops and a hint of dry spice that made for a nice aftertaste.

Overall this was a good winter ale. The server said it was a hoppy red ale this year - and she was right! Body was rather thin, but the hoppiness was extremely nice for a change.

12oz bottle poured into a Guinness pint glass.

Pours a light amber with a one finger light brown head that starts lacing right away. Nose is malty and earthy, also a bit metallic which is fairly off putting.

Taste is overwhelmingly metallic/iron which is really hurting the flavor as I drink it. Mouthfeel is quite watery and the carbonation is sharp. Overall this is a mediocre beer but on close out it was a good deal.

First had: on tap at Teikoku, Edgemont, PA

Another disappointment, in that when I see something called a "winter" beer, I expect a winter warmer or something with a bit of spice, and this wasn't that. It was still a decent brew though.

On tap, poured into a stem glass, clear copper in color with a thin, eggshell head; minimal lacing. Sweet, toasted malts in the aroma, caramel; some light resinous hops detectable. No spice. :( Sweet taste with caramel malts coming through, light indistinct fruit notes, a bit grassy, with some hints of pine, providing a bit of balance and dryness. Medium bodied, and pretty nice to drink.

A: Pours a clear amber color with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves some lacing.

S: Smells strongly of hops with a hint of sweet berries in the background.

T: The taste is dominated by the hop flavor. Almost tastes like an IPA. After the hop flavor dies down, there is a hint of sweet flavor in that comes through. The beer finishes with a malty hoppy aftertaste. Overall the beer was too balanced to hops for me.

M: Relatively thin beer with a slight amount of chew to it.

O: Overall the beer was pretty good. A little too much like an IPA rather than a winter red ale. If you like hoppy beers, then this winter beer will definitely be for you.
