Wow, quite a surprise from our neighbors to the South. I didn't have the highest hopes but came away very pleased.
Appearance is nearly perfect. It's a clear copper color with a one finger white head that fades to a nice film over the beer and leaves some lacing.
The smell shouts hops. There's definitely some caramel malt behind everything, but the citrusy hops really stand out. A mellow malty biscuit smell is there also.
As expected, hops take the forefront in the taste as well. As some have said, this is on the verge of an IPA, but that's how I like my pale ales! The caramel malt comes out a bit, but citrusy hops are the star of the show here, with a piny flavor following them up. Very clean, simple taste, but it works well. My only complaint is that the finish is a bit too grainy with the hops because the malt backbone isn't quite up to the task of carrying around all those hops.
The mouthfeel is heavenly. I would say it is light to medium bodied, but with the perfect amount of carbonation so that it feels pillowy, like it is lightly caressing the tongue as it slips down the throat. Drinkability is off the charts. This is a truly sessionable APA.
