Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.
Okay, with a description/name like that, how could I not grab one of these from the West Lakeview shelf? This stuff pours a clear sienna topped by a finger of khaki foam. The nose comprises a blast of bourbon, light vanilla, mild smoke in the background, and a vague sense of watered-down molasses. The taste brings in more of the same, with the bourbon and smoke combining their forces for good, though much of the remainder is mostly crowded out of the tongue. The body is a solid medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, though not quite as exciting as the name led me to believe, this is some tasty beer. Neither the barrel nor the smoke is able to dominate the proceedings individually, allowing for a pleasantly layered drinking experience.

Really enjoyed this beer, broke out at a tasting over the weekend. . Lovely brown with decent head. Aroma redolent of coconut and smoke. On the palate, less smoke than you would have thought based on the aroma - no, the smoke is more integrated with the bourbon from the barrels, and some raisiny sweetness. Lively mouthfeel.
Seriously, I could probably have taken down the whole 750 myself....but it turned out to be a great share.

Presentation: Poured from a 750 ml brown bottle into a Kentucky Ale snifter. The label is one used for the Barrel Aged Family Reserve series with just a sticker on the neck to identify it as the Smoked Bock.
Appearance: Pours with 3/4 of light tan head. This settles quickly to just a ring around the glass. The beer itself is medium chestnut with a slight red tinge.
Smell: Strong notes from the bourbon upfront, vanilla and cherry with a slight alcohol sweetness. Really a nice, powerful aroma.
Taste: Fairly intense smoke upfront followed by a creamy, smooth malt. Mild hop bitterness in the finish with a distinct nuttiness.
Mouthfeel: Average carbonation level. Body is good.
Drinkability: A well done blend of many varying flavors; nothing overwhelms, yet each provides a nice addition to the whole.
