An industry pint at the Oliver location, one of Gunther's rotating German Series.
This beer appears a clear, very dark bronzed amber hue, with one anemic finger of foamy pale beige head, which wisps away rather quickly, leaving a low ebbing ring of lace around the glass.
It smells of roasted bready malt, a heavy touch of meaty, toasty caramel, and earthy, leafy, weedy hops. The taste is fairly dense caramel/toffee malt, a subtle meaty smokiness, some soft, thick jam-like sweetness, and entrenched earthy, musty hops.
The carbonation is average, and duly supportive, the body a sturdy medium weight, bordering on full, considering the style, with a fairly steady smoothness. It finishes a tad on the sweet side, the caramel pushing through the waning smoke, and the hops, though still muddled, faithfully put out to the end.
A pretty tasty German-style black beer, the malt big and roasted, with attendent smoke notes as if to ram home the point. It might get a bit too sweet and cloying after a few, but that isn't really a problem around here, as of late.
