Tasted as part of a release party flight at the brewery, along with:
Barrel-aged Old Numbskull
Red Wine Barrel-aged Grand Cru
Old Numbskull on nitro
A - Came with a small head which in itself was impressive considering it was a 4 oz taster glass and with the beer being as massive as it was, at 11.0%. The beer left an incredible lacing along the sides of the glass as it went down. Impressed.
S - Guava was at the forefront, with hints of papaya and peach. Substantial piney presence, detected as well. If this were a blind test, I'd have sworn this was one of the best smelling DIPAs I've had.
T - Wowzer, this beer went down so smooth for what it was. Incredibly balanced, the hops matched the malt, and the alcohol was nowhere detected, either in the palate or on the way down. I've come to expect this of Alesmith - they are just so good at masking the alcohol in all of their high-gravity beers. If they were to ever release this as a Double/Triple IPA, I'm sure this would cause some serious displacement at the top of the charts.
M - The very full mouthfeel lets you know that this is squarely in the barleywine category alright.
Overall, this is an excellent take on the American Barleywine style, and one that really is best fresh. Get some while you can, I'm quite sure this will not last long even at the taster-sample-sized serving.
