Iam a little surprised that Alesmith went with a lager this year...good for them.Pours into a half liter stein a deep garnet color with a billowing light beig head atop that slowly settles into a frothy mass.Sweet doughy aromas with a tinge of iron and toast, flavors of dark fruit and alcohol but with a lager drying effect if you know what I mean, alot of raisin and alcohol in the finish. It's na American style with it's brash booziness but man there is alot of flavor packed in here.

Had 1 month old bottle.
Nose: Spicy Munich malt, hint of cola.
Pours a dark tea colored amber under a 1" light tan tinted head that slowly dissipates. some light lace, legs
Malty palate with light sweetness that dries by the finish. Hint of cardamom to cola.
Very creamy smooth medium to full body and medium carbonation.
Liquid bread.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Bottled on 09/17/13.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of light tan head that slowly fade into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A very toasty malt driven aroma with good hints of caramel and chocolate. Toasted malts with upfront hints of biscuit, toasted bread, toffee, caramel, nuts, yeast, and grains along with hints of chocolate and coffee roast. Fruit hints of apple and banana. Sweet hints of brown sugar. Dark fruit hints of fig, raisin, prune, dates, grapes, and plum. Subtle hints of earthy hops linger in the background. A pretty solid lager aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints, a toasty and sweet malt driven taste with notes of caramel, chocolate, and dark fruit. Toasted malts with a taste of biscuit, toasted bread, caramel, toffee, nuts, grains, and yeast. Roasted notes of chocolate and coffee. Fruity notes of banana and apple. Sweet taste of brown sugar. Dark fruit undertones with notes of raisin, figs, dates, grapes, prune, and plum. Light notes of earthy hops. A pretty good Doppelbock taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and slightly sticky. Finishes dry. Alcohol heat is hidden very well.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Doppelbock. Good toasty and nutty malt flavors with a touch of dark fruit.

Thanks to Thomas & Jenny for sharing this one!

Poured a dark amber color with a glint of copper in the light. Compact head of foam, a fingers width or so, leaving behind spotty lacing here and there.

Aroma is subdued, light malty with a clean German lager yeast.

Honeyed malt, smooth and lightly toasty, not overly sweet and boozy like so many Doppelbocks. This one is exceedingly smooth and clean, with plenty of malt complexity. Really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing the special beer guys!

Two fingers worth of late to develop perfectly uniform audibly fizzy khaki colored fluffy frothy goodness.... Good retention gives way to a perfectly even blanket of slightly delicate lacing with a very thin collar... The color is a slightly murky medium brown... A limited bit of sluggish carbonation can be seen towards the top of the glass... The aroma is down right heavenly... An unbridled malt bomb... Rich dark breads... Caramel... More rich dark breads... More caramel... Dark fruits... Some faint chocolate notes... The nose is a wonderful indication of what's to come on the palate... The only difference is a slight hint of booziness... Hides the 10% ABV rather well... This is an outstanding world class brew that if you can still find a bottle of is worth every penny you would pay for it... If you can't tell, I absolutely love this beer... I'm a huge fan boy for Alesmith, but this is one of, if not, their best... The best beer I've had in ages...

750 ml bottle poured into a pilsner glass.
10% ABV, "Drink this meal in a glass now or cellar it for years to come." Serve in a goblet at 50-55°, Bottled on 09/16/13

A - AleSmith's 2013 Decadence pours an absolutely gorgeous mahogany-laced amber with a tall light khaki head. Steady retention keeps the pile of foam afloat while a clean glass nabs all the lace it can.

S - Decidedly bready, Decadence's robust aroma smells like a freshly baked loaf of bread with dark fruits throughout. Notes of milk chocolate covered raisin and sticky sweet caramel are pungent and welcome as this lager broods with a robust heartiness.

T - Heavy malt sweetness lays wonderfully on the tongue, coating it with Munich bready characteristics, toast crust, gooey caramel, and toffee shavings with a hint of chocolate covered raisins on the finish.

M - Full bodied heft makes it's way across the tongue and down the throat with sublime smoothness; almost creamy in texture. Doppelbocks are already strong but AleSmith steps it up a few notches, cranking out 10% alcohol in a beer that doesn't display anywhere near that much for a completely perfect, stomach-filling beer, just as the Bavarian monks had intended!

O - AleSmith briefly recaptures how the Bavarian monks who established the doppelbock style coined it "liquid bread" and go on to describe the beer as meal in a glass. A malt-lover's dream come true, the 2013 edition of Decadence certainly is a meal in a glass, brimming with balanced malt sweetness that underscores the rich bready profile the massive amount of malt brings to the table. The clean lager finish and complete absence of alcohol make this an easy-drinking beer for how hefty it is and one that I'm convinced would win over any German doppelbock purist!

750ml into a snifter.

A: Pours a beautiful glassy reddish black with a moderate beige head.

S: Smells of sticky maple and toffee, plum flesh, cream, nutmeg, brown bread.

T: Taste brings dry caramelized grain, fig, molasses, lightly astringent roasted grain, mild hop bitterness, raisin, a hint of banana-y esters.and booze on the end.

M: Surprisingly light-bodied with low carbonation.

O: A nice doppelbock that hides the alcohol well.
