Presentation: 22oz brown bomber, white silk screened label with no freshness date.

Appearance: Effervescent carbonation with a light haze from both the chill and some from the yeast, fluffy white head holds strong on top of the pale golden orange colour.

Smell: Citrusy of a tart orange and bit of rind, light bready and yeasty aromas … clean to the nose.

Taste: Big crispness, smoothness lays in strong also after the medium high carbonation. Medium body with a mounting dryness. Quick flash of grainy pale malt before the hops set in, bitterness is lightly sharp with a rounded pungent citric flavour. Clean in the mouth with waves of citric flavours from the hops and a straight lines pale graininess that is, again, clean. Down deep is a hop flavour that borders on the earthy with herbal undertones. The back end is crisp and dry though not bone dry, hops lay in with a long lasting herbal flavour with citric flavours.

Notes: Poster boy for the American Pale Ale style, rich without being too complex and drinkable to the point of being a beer to have in the fridge year round. The hop fix is there for the hopheads but not too hoppy to the point excessive.

This beer is clearly a "light IPA" impression of the APA style. It's very hop forward with a sharp bitterness and strong hop flavors throughout the palate. In the glass it has a very "West Coast IPA" look with great golden clarity and no real discernible caramel malt or reddish tint. Aroma on this three month old bottle was a little weaker than some of the top offerings but what was there was very much Cascade hop goodness, Flavor wise, this is clearly a hop lovers APA: the malt is very quietly murmuring in the background while the hops go all Axl Rose on you. I liked this beer but it is a very dry APA. I have to admit I am a much bigger fan of a slightly more malt-balanced beer, and I like my APA to have a fruitier note which this beer does not have. I admire Alesmith for creating this beer though, it is brewed right at the edge of being too hoppy without at all going over that line. Very good.

One thing I noted is that you definitely need to let this beer warm up to about 50f to really appreciate it. At lower temperatures the beer does not present enough of the malt and it comes off very dry. Slightly warmer the malt opens up and glows a little in the middle of the palate and that really improves the impression of this beer. The bottle is clearly marked with temperature instructions and you will enjoy it better of you need those.

Pours clear-ish gold with pure white creamy head of about 2 fingers that slowly dissipates and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is tropical fruit, pine, and something spicy that I'm not sure of. Taste is not fruity at all, bitter, spice in the nose turns out to be oniony kind of thing that finally gets piney for a split second, then sweetens up with some malt at the end. Has a lingering bitterness that is enjoyable. Mouthfeel is just ok. Overall, being my first Alesmith beer, I'm a little disappointed.
