On-tap at the Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, CA,

A: Pale, golden yellow, with a thick, white head, poured into a fluted goblet.

S: Yeasty esters, with pears and apples, very fragrant.

T: Tasty, and yeasty, lemon is the predominate flavour, pear esters, with some noble, floral hoppiness.

M: Smooth, dry and spritzy, quite thick for a Belgian Pale.

D: Light and easy to drink, as compared to some of Alesmith's other offerings, a good example of a Belgian Pale, I liked it.

Served on-draught into a plastic sampler cup (per Alesmith's preferences!) at Alesmith's tasting room. I was shocked at the presentation. Alesmith ought to know better. Reviewed from detailed notes. Expectations were high given the brewery.

A: Pours a one finger head of slight cream, fair thickness, and good retention. Colour is a semitransparent copper. No visible yeast. Appealing.

Sm: Hops - mainly floral with little bitterness. Some citrus aromas; orange peel is a highlight. Very pleasant and fresh. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Honey, pleasant clean floral hops, citrus fruit esters, and clean unobtrusive malts. Balanced and enjoyable. Not quite refreshing. Well built. Quite fresh. Quite simple for the brewery, but nice nevertheless. No alcohol or yeast comes through. I do wish it were more complex and subtle.

Mf: Smooth and wet, suiting the flavours nicely. Slightly creamy. Neither too thick nor too thin.

Dr: Drinkable and enjoyable. Hides its ABV well. Refreshing and nice. I like it, but Alesmith has far better offerings. Give it a go only if you're a big fan of the style.

I enjoyed several samples of this tasty brew at the Bluezapalooza beer fest @ Mammoth Mtn, in the Sierra, reviewed from notes (yeah I was that guy at the fest taking notes.) Poured light amber, clear, with a light tan head, and left some wispy lacing. Nose was mildly of corainder, and some orange peels. This is a nicely crafted Belgian pale, crisp, refreshing and palate cleansing. Love the style and this version would be great for all sorts of foods, BBQ, salads, cheese, and so on

L: A copper tinted gold pour with a slight haze kicks up a lacy 2” white foam collar that persists for 3 minutes.

S: Ripe to over ripe fruit aromas, orange, citrus.

T: Big fruit flavors are a blend of peach, banana, citrus, orange and bubble gum supported by light malts. The fruit flavors are medium high, hop and malt flavors are medium to medium low, and hop bitterness is medium low.

F: Very creamy medium to medium low body with medium high carbonation.

O: A refreshing and flavorful Belgian Style pale ale with big fruit flavors.

Poured a nice golden color with a one finger, fluffy white head. Quite nice. Scents of fruit, apricot and peach mostly, with some slight citrus and pear alongside candi sugar and faint hints of Belgian yeast. Very appealing, a good Belgian golden aroma, though not the most complex. Flavor begins with apricot and peach, moves into spicy Belgian yeast and finishes with yeasts spiciness and some graininess. Aftertaste is grainy. Faint, fruity tang as it warms. Again, a good, basic Belgian ale flavor, but not as complex as some. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium-high carbonation and a watery feel. Quite easy to drink, but very light compared to most Belgian Golden Ales. Overall a good, easy drinking, light take on a Belgian. It's not as rich, complex or deep as some, but it is a good warmer weather Belgian style beer.

On tap at Solena Beach Pizza Plant. Golden Belgian style, represented by yellow with head head and lace. Funky yeast aroma and taste Sweetish but otherwise fine Belgian, leaving a sweet aftertaste. Offset really spicey stuff, a soda pop transition beer.

Pours two fingers on a hazy light straw body.
The aroma is lemon zest an grain. Nice.
The taste is grainy, mild lemon bitterness with a clean finish.
The texture is crisp.
Refreshing.

On tap at the AleSmith event at City Beer (well, actually at Triptych across the street).

Very nice appearance. Cloudy golden-straw color with a thick white head and very good lacing.

Aroma is Belgian yeast, wheat, sweet malt, banana, and citrus. Smells great.

Flavor is a lot like Horny Devil, just toned down as the description says. Wheat, pale malt, Belgian yeast, spices, banana, and orange peel. Mild floral hop notes.

Body is medium and carbonation is fairly lively.

Drinkability is high. Overall a really good beer. Another winner from these guys.

Originally reviewed November 26, 2006. On tap at AleSmith. Light orange cream aroma, bold with floral herbs. Some bright esters coming from the bold yeast character. Pour of orangish gold. Wispy sweet caramel and lightly profused citrus spice qualities. Acerbic and certain with lemon, from both rind, pith and juice. Nicely down, however a little cloying and yeasty at the backend for me.

Poured into a tulip glass, the Lil' Devil shows a clear golden orange in color with an inch of white head. Retention is too brief however.

Has a nice yeast and candi sugar nose, with apple and pear dominating. Candi sweetness is light and doesn't interfere or overwhelm. Nose becomes harder to find as the carbonation settles. I really think this beer would benefit from bottle conditioning as the CO2 bubbles are too large to stay in the liquid.

Taste follows the nose and delivers a clean fruit and yeast flavor with the expected light amount of sweetness. Offers a decent feel and drink as well though it becomes a bit juice like towards the bottom. Again, a result of the outgassing of the carbonation. Decent, but would be improved from all angles with better carbonation retention.
