Serving: 1 pt. 9.4 Fl. oz. bottle poured into a Founder's CBS snifter. Most recent 2015 edition. No bottled on date, but I'm guessing this is maybe 6 or 7 months old at this point.

A: Pours a pitch black color, with a slight, bubbly mocha-colored head that sticks around.

S: First thing up front is ton of barrel. And it's mostly oak and char, not a ton of sweet or wet bourbon. Next you get that bitter coffee underneath, but it's not huge. Some chocolate and cocoa in the finish, with a touch of vanilla.

T: Right up front is that barrel character again, with tons of oak, wood, char, smoke, spirit and whiskey. Very, very boozy and alcoholic. Middle of the mouth comes a ton of coffee bitterness, but not exactly flavor. Finish is even more barrel and oak, as well as a ton of booze and bourbon.

M: Medium body, decent carbonation. Tons of alcohol and booze here.

O: Big thanks to illinikap for this one. Been a long time want for me. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of regular Speedway Stout. It's too bitter and hoppy for me. Heading into this one, I was hoping that the barrel would smooth some of that out. Overall, this mostly accomplishes that, but there's a couple shortcomings. I do like the large oak and barrel presence here, and how it smooths out that coffee bitterness. My only gripe, is that this is quite boozy and hot from beginning to end. I've had larger ABV beers that you get no alcohol from, but this one is very, very hot. For some context, I'd say this is somewhere between KBS and BCBCS, but closer to KBS.

Recommendation: Any fan of Speedway Stout or BA coffee stouts needs to get a hold of this one.

2010 Vintage

L: Blackness
S: Sugary sweetness, slight bourbon odors
T: Just like SS, five years later with a nice bourbon layer to it. Sweet, slight raisins, chocolatey goodness
F: Like drinking cream
O: A great beer

2012 vintage opened in 2016. Poured into a sniftered. Never drank a fresh BASS but wow this beer. Tons of vanilla and a graceful bourbon back end. All around a beautiful beer. Can't wait to try a fresh one to compare.

750 into snifter

Relatively fresh bottle. Lots of bourbon heat, some coffee, but overall just a smooth BA stout. Something about this makes the regular Speedway seem more special - at the price, this is absolutely not worth it - I would take a few regular over this

Look-Color is a dark brow, a bit of light shines through the thinner part of the glass, pours a thin ring of lacing.
Smell-Smells just like chocolate espresso cake. Lots of milk chocolate, vanilla, and mild coffee.
Tate-Just like the smell, a beautiful blend of milk chocolate, vanilla (probably from the barrels) and smooth coffee. The bourbon barrels really took the bitter edge of the coffee without overpowering the rest of the flavors, no booze to speak of at all. unbelievably delicious.
Feel-Medium/full body, lighter then expected(mean that positively), has a pillowy, marshmallow-like chewiness that is extremely enjoyable, not too oily, more carbonated then you'd think from looking at it which keeps the texture from being too heavy.
Overall-Seriously delicous beer, Flawless texture and absolutely unbelievable flavor and aroma.

The overwhelming winner of our latest bottle share, this dark and complex beer deserves every drop of hype it receives. Boozy on the nose, but way too easy to drink for the alleged 12% abv. AleSmith blew me away the first time I had the base Speedway, and this took it to the next level.

Lots of flavor in this variant. The barrel definitely came though on this one. Lots of heat on the back end with lots of sweetness on the front end. Could taste and smell the bourbon barrel from a mile away.

2013 Bottle.

Look: Almost still, dark brown body. Super low carb kick-up during and after the pour. Thread thin halo around the glass. Oily and slick lacing and legs that completely melt from the sides of the glass.
Smell: Bourbon, sweet grains, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, sweet malts, bourbon, and molasses. Play dough.
Taste: See above. Nice drawn out finish that concludes with much caramel. Big sweets that do not overpower or take away from the rest of the gang.
Feel: Creamy and smooth in the box. Texturally superior to many top shelf imperial stouts and RISs.

Overall - Maybe not as thick as BCBS, but up there in terms of love and goodness. A top competitor. I am glad I have another bottle.

Had it on tap, and out the bottle, its extremely well done in any format.

Black, almost no head on it. Aroma somehow gets over the coffee in your face of the base version and gives it some bourbon to wrap your head around.

Taste, a creamy smoothness over the pungent coffee and roast that the base version has going for it. The barrel seems to mellow this out with a dallop of bourbon along with it. Drinks pretty damn effortlessly with the coconut and vanilla. Caramel and marshmellow sweetness. Warming alcohol is nicely displayed, far from harsh or distracting. Chocolate is there, right in the middle of it all. The coffee is nowhere near as huge as in the base version, the bourbon character kind of forces that to the side a little bit.

Carbonation is lower than regular Speedway. Toffee notes challenge caramel. Gets to be thicker and more chewy the longer you go with it. If you like coffee and bitterness, stick with the regular version, if you want some barrel, hit this up.

Bottled on 10/30/13.
Finally decided to crack this bottle after holding on to it for a year. Regular Speedway is one of my favorites and readily available year-round in my area. So I was really looking forward to this variation.
Look: Jet black with barely any head after pouring.
Smell: Dominant Bourbon with some toasted coconut and coffee.
Taste: Again Bourbon dominates, especially after the coffee has receded, 2 years past bottling. But that's fine with me. I love the Bourbon barrel effect on big stouts, especially from breweries that know how to use the barrel properly...and AleSmith does!
Highly recommended if you can find a bottle.
Still holding onto a BA Speedway w/Vietnamese Coffee. Looking forward to comparing it to this one.

2015 version. Smells unreal, almost as if it will be too strong. Taste is super smooth though. Boozy barrel age taste not present. A bit of soy sauce flavor. Very good stout, but but would prefer more boozy BA character.

This variant is everything good that basic Speedway Stout is, further enhanced in flavor by the bourbon barrels that housed it which imparted a sweet and smooth finish to the beer.

Bottled in 2013 and finally cracked it open. Lot of bourbon on the nose from the initial pour. Coffee flavor has definitely faded. Finish is somewhat sweet and not nearly as harsh as first thought it would be

A-As black as it gets with a moka brown head that dissipates quite quickly
S- Lots of burbon aroma, quite a bit of alcohol odor
M-Surprisingly light mouthfeel and carbonation was more than I had anticipated
T-Like drinking a tall glass of the good stuff, but in a beer vessel.
O-This is an outstanding beer, so clean and smooth, drinking is the only way

Bottled 10/30/13, just under two years.

Pours a rich a lusciously smooth dark brown/black with a thin layer of light brown foam.

Deeply roasted malt, coffee has faded slightly but still detectable, sweet vanilla, and subtle bourbon heat.

Subtle coffee notes, roasty, oak, vanilla, and gentle warming bourbon.

Heavy-bodied, low carbonation, chewy, silky smooth, and roasty.

Overall, age definitely lessened the coffee aroma and flavor, but two years turned this into a creamy smooth sipper, and a damn tasty one at that.

Wow. Okay, a 2014 bottle acquired via trade from the excellent Morandi. If you're reading this, thanks, dude.

Appearance is perfect. Tight little bubbles, even on my second night (I was not dumb enough to attempt the whole thing on a Wednesday night).
Smell is bourbon and dark malts. The coffee's almost gone, but I never knew it so can't feel too sad.
Taste starts malty sweet then goes bourbon then vanilla then perfect coffee bitterness mixing with roasted malt and residual bourbon fumes then drying roast then I instantly want another drink.
And it's slick, and carbed enough to stay a little tingly on the tongue...Wow.

It's kbs with more horsepower. Watch out!

2014 bottle. Love the jet black pour with small tan/brown head that leaves a little lacing behind. Aroma is boozy and coffee. Happy to say that the coffee is still very much present here, and in fact I might even say it's still a little "hot" on the bourbon side. I loved it, but now that I've consumed it I'm wondering what another year or so would do to the taste.

Pours black with a small brown head.

Smell: Smells of dark coffee roast and bourbon (if you are one of those beersnobs that seek out BA beers, but complain that it smells and taste of too much bourbon, dont drink this, and better yet, why are you seeking out BA beers, I see this too often)

Taste: Bourbon and coffee, slight butterscotch and vanilla, then roast and bourbon again. I have a lot of Favorite tasting beers, but this one takes the cake on my favorite beer when it comes to the bourbon characteristics in it.

Mouthfeel: full bodied velvety greatness

Overall: This is a perfect imperial coffee stout aged in bourbon barrels. Perfect in every catagory.

Impressive looking brew: dark, nearly black, with a solid cream head with excellent retention, and leaving flat fields of lacing.

Aroma is equally impressive, layering bitter chocolate and coffee against a smooth bourbon undertone.

Flavor follows, with a hint of butterscotch (surely from the bourbon choice) both in the front third and on the back end. Bourbon is both a significant complement to the overall profile and perfectly restrained. Less coffee presence than in the base brew, but the massive, chocolatey, roasty malt shines through cleanly and strongly.

Incredibly smooth; absolutely unbelievable presence for 12% and BA. Thick, viscous, impressively mild on the palate.

First had on tap at the FW Invitational in '13, subsequently in bottles in '15.

Black, oily and thick, dark brown head on it, pretty cool looking like chocolate milk. Bottles seemed thicker. Aroma hits bourbon and heavy roast, the coffee is subdued compared to the non barrel aged bottles.

Smoother and creamier than the pungent coffee you get out of the base version, even when uber fresh. Vanilla and coconut can be picked up in the smallest way. Its warming. Mild chocolate.

Toffee and caramel in the mouthfeel. Always a treat.

2013 bottle. Had this for the first time last night in a sours and stouts tasting, and I was not disappointed (I didn't have to pay for it). Completely opaque, delightfully thick, and absolutely delicious. Naturally dark, nice barrel notes with a hint of coffee and vanilla. Feel was a bit thin and the carbonation was more prominent relative to other ba stouts. The tasting also featured Peche Mortel, Vanilla Shake, KBS, and gold wax Assassin. This was my third favorite stout after SR-71 and Assassin. It just nudged out the KBS, which is a very similar beer.

Serving Type: Bottle (2015 vintage)
Consumed: 8.21.15

A: 4.75 Pours pitch black, looking very thick out the bottle. The dark tan head is dense, has good retention (about two minutes), and leaves little lace.

S: 4.5 The coffee in this beer, like most speedway stouts, isn’t as in-your-face as other coffee stouts. Instead, it plays more of a supporting role to aromas that are largely dominated by bourbon and vanilla. Char, molasses, and roasted malt also come through early, with dark coffee lingering on the finish.

T: 4.5 Taste is similar to the nose, but a bit harsher until the beer warms to 55 or 60 degrees. Flavors start sweet with lots of chocolate, vanilla, maple syrup, caramel, and dark cherries. The bourbon mixes in throughout the experience until moving on to mild coffee, roasted malt, and more vanilla on the slightly bitter finish.

M: 4.75 The body is rich, creamy, and very satisfying and the carbonation is also near perfect. The only minor flaw is that the finish is slightly too dry.

O: 4.5 Another excellent variation on one of the best coffee stouts out there. This beer is not as coffee forward as BCBCS, but still special in that it lets the barrel shine a bit more. I was hoping this would be indistinguishable from BAVSS, but, while still excellent, it does lack something that puts it just a notch below in my book.
