750ml bottle into Duvel tulip. Picked this bottle up in MA a few months ago.
Appearance: Free pour yields a one inch dark tan froth that doesn't move for a long time. Pours black and is very leggy with lots of spotty lacing.
Smell: From the bottle, smells bold and well integrated (coffee and caramel malt). Hopes are set high.
In the glass, it's amazing. Coffee, tons of malt depth, molasses, caramel. Stays potent throughout the bottle. I haven't smelled a beer this deep and good since Port's Older Viscosity. Rich, complex, assertive; excellent. The nose makes some big promises.
Taste: Smooth, amazing integration of coffee and molasses, roasted malt, caramel, vanilla. Creamy feel elevates these flavors. Caramel note is like eating straight caramel, way more defined than the average big malty beer.
Beautiful savory and sweet balance. This beer is like dinner and dessert combined, and both of them were expensive. Some mild soy sauce notes, tons of coffee ice cream and vanilla, caramel, with a building alcohol heat that doesn't get in the way of any of the other flavors.
Slightly reminiscent of the Bruery's Cuir in its depth and balance of savory molasses flavors with sweet decadence and satisfying booziness. Hard to believe this is a year round beer.
Mouthfeel: Light side of full bodied. Maximally creamy, like a great oatmeal stout. Low to moderate carbonation. Never even remotely sugary; a 12% ABV stout that's properly attenuated.
Overall: This beer is a masterpiece. The kind of thing people talk up, you think "well it can't be *that* good," and then you try it, forget the hype, and bask in how excellent it is.
