Poured from the 750ml into a snifter
Pitch black, with a big, rich, creamy brown head that leaves rings of lace. Smells of deep espresso, honey, molasses and chocolate. On the phenolic side, some spices and a mild piney hop.
Taste is truly amazing. The overwhelmingly rich, creamy espresso and chocolate seem to predominate at first, but as your palate adjusts these bold flavors dissolve into subtle complexities. Hints of apricot, plums, cherries and white chocolate- even fresh spring water, cut vegetables, and asparagus- round out into a sweet caramel and molasses, walnuts, butter, and cream. Mouthfeel is great, but a tad on the oily, buttery side due to some diacetyl that would round out with age. Truly one of the beers I've ever had. Way to go, Alesmith.
