Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 11-09-2002

Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

I love almost everything about this beer. The price is fair, but i don't think its an exceptional value.

Good beer, but body too thin. Waay too much coffee. Enjoyed it, but won't buy it.

2013 bottle poured into a snifter. Nice beige, 2-finger head that sticks around quite a while. Perfect nose for the style - coffee and roasted malts with hints of brown sugar and toffee. Near perfect body as well - heavy enough to such staniate the beer but not overly chewy. The sweetness has started to show signs of a shift toward a more roasty, bitterness, but I don't see this ever melding into something I wouldn't still consider sweet. Still, by and large, the standard deviation by which all non-BA coffee stouts should be compared (just hairs above FBS, imo). I'd be curious to know if lactose and/or oatmeal were used, because this shows great characteristics of each. Cheers!

I found this beer to have an astringent aftertaste. It has a nice nose and looked good but when it came to the flavor I found this beer to be lacking in subtlety. It poured thick and had a nice mouthfeel, but missed some of the creaminess I like with a stout clocking in at 12% ABV. My overall experience with the beer went through a couple of phases initially i thought the flavor was lacking in sweetness, but as i sipped the carmel flavors started to build and i thought the beer was starting to round out as it warmed, however as i continued to drink the alcohol seemed to overpower the overall flavor of the beer.

a: super dark black. like the color of motor oil. real nice tan head thats pretty solid on top. it poured around 3 fingers, then settled at around 1/2 finger

s: richly roasted malts, dark chocolate, brown sugar, a hint of sweet vanilla, very very faint smoke. smells very rich. makes the mouth water

t: roasted malts, sweet caramel, alcohol, brown sugar all punch you in the face right away. as the mouth begins to adjust, you can start to pick up some of the coffee notes (roasted coffee beans, coffee bitterness). there is a sweet generic dark fruit flavor in here. i can't pick up a specific fruit, but it is lending a sweetness to this that i am detecting. finishes with big roasted malts and alcohol

m: super silky mouthfeel. its great. carbonation is a little beyond medium. very nice mouthfeel for a stout

o: the bottle i'm drinking from is a few weeks old. its got lots of alcohol in the taste, and i honestly wish the coffee would be featured a bit more in the flavor. with the exception of the alcohol heat, its a pretty nice beer. big, luxurious, and definitely a sipper. that being said, i don't think its quite worthy of all the hype it gets (especially given the price), and i believe there are better beers out there
