Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Finally got to try this! Solid stout but definitely let down. Smell was dark malts and coffee. Flavor was solid but not great - roster malts, dark fruit and coffee. It was just lacking in depth and balance. A bit too bitter. Still really good - maybe my expectations were too high.

Much better served at nearly room temperature. While cold you get a bit of the alcohol bite but at room temp u taste the full complexity of the beer.

Smell is coffee along with an alcohol bite. Taste is coffee, rich malts, caramel, chocolate and a bit of smoke. After taste is pleasant and the coffee lingers. Looks beautiful when poured with a deep black color with moderate head. Overall a very enjoyable beer and lives up to the hype. The bottle is awesome too. It's thick, like almost two bottles in one. Have yet to be disappointed with an Ale Smith beer.

Typical oily, jet black look of a big stout. Got over an inch of tan-colored head when poured into a snifter. Large bubbles in the foam, not quite as dense as the foam on something like To Øl's Goliat. Above-average retention and lacing for a stout.
You can smell the coffee, but it's not dominant or bitter. Definitely also getting chocolate notes and something earthy or almost piney, probably the hops.
I can taste coffee, malt, and hops, but all well balanced. Slight smokiness too. The first few sips had a bitter, metallic finish, but as it warmed, that completely smoothed out. I think next time I'll have this one almost at room temperature.
Overall, one of the top non-barrel-aged coffee stouts I've had. Update: as it warms to room temperature, it definitely has more malty sweetness but without overwhelming the coffee character. Quite nice.

So now I got 999 unique beers at Untappd. Just GOT to try something beatiful for 1000!
Whith the upcoming Swedish Porterfestival in Gothenburg tomorrow I thougt a dark beer should be appropriate.

I chose AleSmith Speedway Stout from my beercellar. 100/100 at ratebeer is not bad...

The beer pours dark brown to black with a two finger high beige head.

Nose: Halleluja! Toffee, dark chocolate, coffee, fudge, caramel malt, brown sugar, vanilla, cookies and licorice.
Taste: Roasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, sweet caramel, smoke, licorice and tobacco.
Body: Medium to full body. Light carbonated. Complex, smooth texture. Dry ending.

This is beatiful!

I'm glad this was my 1000 unique beer!

Jet black body, looks THICK. Mocha colored head is slow to form but looks dense when it does, fades to nothing, no lace. Smell is heavy with chocolate, coffee, roastiness. The flavor is where it really shines, with flavors of sweet cream, dark chocolate, smoke, leather, earthiness, and, lastly, coffee. No acidity from the coffee (good), but plenty of bitterness comes through on the finish, in stark contrast to the semi-dry initial wave. The alcohol adds some spice to the flavor, akin to actual capsicum, and warmth down the chute, luckily not interfering at all with the other flavors. Body is rich, thick, smooth, full, and heavy.
It's got hedonistic chocolate/cream, bracing bitterness and heat, and plenty in between. I was expecting more coffee, but it provided enough substitutes for me to be happy. This is the one of the biggest yet most drinkable stouts I've yet encountered. Dangerous, wonderful.

Pours a jet black with a big fan head. Coffee, chocolate with definite hop presence smell. Taste follows nose with the chocolate and hop bursting forward. What an awesome beer. Tons of taste in which the mouthfeel is not overbearing. Do not taste the alcohol, but if you wait a few seconds after sip, you know it.

Treated as an American Double/Imperial Stout, I poured this into a snifter.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a slim finger's worth of a mocha head. A mild touch of stringy lacing slides into the beer.
The smell has rich dark chocolate along with sweet milk chocolate combining into subtle roasty coffee. Light smoke and black licorice fulfills the balance of its aroma.
The taste plays upon the sweet and the roast passing off to the smoke and sweetness of the black licorice. A mild sweet to roasty aftertaste runs into the finish.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a great sipping quality about it. Minimal stickiness allows a subtle harshness from the carbonation to mildly hit my tongue. Feels really nice.
Overall, hot damn, what a mighty fine American Double/Imperial Stout. So glad I have another bottle to pull out this winter.

This beer pours a perfect black with a large, fizzy head. The aroma is almost elusively coffee based, jumping out strongly from the large and fizzy head. The flavor is heavily influenced by the coffee, as well as some associated smoke and licorice notes. The mouthfeel is fizzy and surprisingly light bodied. Overall this is a very powerful coffee beer, perfect for spicy food.

Black, really black with a nice tan frothy head that didn't last long. Aroma is roasted malt and a bit of coffee. Taste follows the nose but there's some dark fruit, a bit of sweet milkiness, and a touch of hop bite. The texture is a bit thinner than other big stouts but somewhat creamy at the same time. Still, a pretty amazing beer that lives up to the hype. I coming back to this one.

Pours black cocoa with a tan head. Smells of roasty chocolate and coffee notes. The taste is a perfect balance between dark chocolate and roasted coffee. It's astonishing how covered up the abv is in this one. Probably one of the best, most well-balanced stout flavors I have tasted, and I can hardly believe it is 12%. It feels creamy and goes down smooth, with the abv being undetectable. If it wasn't so expensive I'd be buying this all the time. Great stout!

I'm sure there is a stout out there better than this, but I haven't had it.

Notes from 9/29/15, tasting bulb at Julian's in Providence:

Coffee black body, caramel head
Astringent coffee, round red notes
Soft oak, something like green/light roasted beans, just a bit of dry vanilla, almost French Vanilla - light body, especially for the ABV, which is totally hidden.
Coffee and dark cacao nib on subsequent swallows, so light and smooth and dry.

Make sure you bring a friend for this one, sneaky boozy

Poured from the bottle a deep brown-black with two fingers of dark tan head.

Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla and a bit of an astringent note I can't identify.

Tasted of roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, and a boozy finish from the 12% abv.

Medium-to-full bodied and creamy with a lighter carbonation.

I'm an instant fan of this one. Speedway Stout lives up to the hype!

I've been looking for this bad boy a long time. Excited its available in IL and I was able to pick one up. Served colder than suggested, in a snifter.

A - pours jet black, with a macchiato-colored head that dissipates very quickly. Looks like a big stout oughta.

S - Dark chocolate and coffee up front, hints of vanilla, star anise, and a pleasant smokiness in support. Warming brings out the fruits, especially black cherry and currant.

T - Bittersweet morsels, cocoa powder and cold brew java. Blueberries and pomegranate follow ever so subtly, opening into notes of an Earl Grey/black tea blend and chocolate-covered raisins and walnuts. Earthy hops in the finish balanced by a lingering mocha sweetness. So much going on here.

M - The feel here is thick, but smooth and silky. Lots of tiny bubbles keep the sips coming in this compellingly drinkable beast.

This is an amazing beer. Look: This is a dark, creamy looking beer. Khaki head. This thing is SO thick! I love it. Definitely a winter beer. Every sip leaves a beautiful and thick lacing on the side of my glass. The head on my beer was not as large as I would have expected. Maybe half a finger, but that is okay. Smell: Dark fruit and bakers chocolate are very noticeable. A slight coffee smell as well. Everything I would want out of a Stout. Taste: Bakers chocolate, fig, some sweet coffee. Leaves a nice, semi-bitter after taste (bakers chocolate). Fantastic. Feel: Creamy. Leaves a lactose esque film on the back of the throat. Overall: This is a damn good beer. Would definitely recommend. Next time I find one of these I will definitely be aging it. I eagerly await trying this after it has aged a bit.

L- Black with a two and a half finger mocha head. Good lacing.

A- Boozy up front with a hint of raisin, fig, and dark cherry. Bakers chocolate and coffee are substantial. Toffee & caramel kick up as well. A bit fuesil in my opinion.

T- Booze, Devils food cake, brownie batter, big dark fruit, and some roasted coffee bitterness toward the backend.

F- Creamy and slick, but not as thick as many other imperial stouts. I feel like although this is a sipper, it should be enjoyed by two or three people at once over dessert.

O- A great beer that has its faults. The fuesil character in my bottle will change indefinitely, but it will also leave with even more dark fruit and less coffee.

Edit: I have a tendency for over thinking certain beers. Looking back, both the aroma and taste were very good, but I will stand behind some of its off characters.

L: Perfect looking imperial stout. Jet black with a creamy brown head. The very thick head also leaves a very sticky tan lacing.
S: Roasty and fruity. Very nice aromas coming through with this beer. There is a brightness in there, cutting through all the big stout aromas you expect.
T: Surprisingly bright for such a huge stout. Dark chocolate and fruit, but really lacks the coffee flavors I was hoping for. Still, it has great flavors and a super long finish that eventually highlights the coffee I was looking for.
F: Perfect thickness. Some people might think its a bit too thin for the weight of this beer, but I love it. It is a bit boozy, but I mean at 12% you have to expect that. I think i might like a bit more bite in a double though. Still, great beer to drink.
O: This is only my second AleSmith beer (other is .394 APA), but so far I am extremely impressed by what these guys are doing. This is a world-class stout for sure. I can't wait to age one to see what happens with it.

Dark, milk chocolate colored head and your standard stout colored liquid. Lacing is sticky and sparse.

Smells of chocolate, coffee, toastiness and lightly like coconut.

Taste is immediately strong with some nearly overwhelming alcohol but it fades in time to allow the dark bitter chocolate to shine along with a bit of coffee and some nuttiness before the astringency circles back around.

Finishes sticky and just a touch sweet

I had this several years ago at a beer fest, and was blown away. Fast forward to the present, and Alesmith has arrived in Maine.
Very dark brown with a rim of red. Small tan head.
Beautiful aroma of coffee, chocolate, and charcoal.
The taste only improved on the aroma. Espresso coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and char.
Smooth, easy to drink. The 12% ABV is well-hidden.
Fantastic beer!

Pours jet black with a large khaki head. Smell is a little muted, but has some coffee and cocoa present. The taste reminds me of founders breakfast stout, just way more well done. Tons of coffee, a little cocoa, and a nice roasted finish. Strong coffee lingering aftertaste. Pretty good, but I'm overall a little let down.

Dark black in color with a light tan head. At first sip it was a little thinner than I expected. A little coffee flavor with some bitter chocolate. The 12% was well hidden, may be due to the 04/24/2014 bottle date? The flavor was more pronounced as the beer warmed.
Updated review:
The first one I tried was chilled, which was not the norm for me. I always drink these stouts at room temp.
The beer poured jet black with a light tan head. It had the aroma of coffee and bitter chocolate. It tasted of chocolate, coffee and nicley roasted malts. The mouth feel was just about right. As noted before, the 12% is well hidden and it is very easy to drink. Excellent beer , find it and enjoy.

The beer pours a nice brownish and slightly creamy but more bubbly head that dissipates quickly. The beer itself is a nice gorgeous black color that has a slick texture to it. The look is very appealing.

The smell is absolutely great. It's a fairly complex smell with multiple distinct notes that I really enjoy. The most distinctive and present note is the coffee, which is a bit sweet and roasty. The chocolate comes in as well and is fairly sweet. Both the chocolate and coffee mix nice and go well with the slightly boozy smell.

The taste resembles the smell in its delicious mixture of chocolate, coffee, and alcohol but also includes a slight hint of dark fruit. The combination of the three make for a wonderful experience.

The feel is good. The beer has a nice biting carbonation to keep it from feeling too thick from its heavy body. There is a also some warmth in the finish.

Overall, a fantastic beer and worth getting when you can find it. This one of the better stouts with a nice full flavor to it.

Love how this beer looks. Smells and tastes pretty good but doesn't live up to the look. Not a lot of coffee, even though it's billed as such. I'll give them credit for disguising the alcohol however, as it's not that forward for a 12%. Warms up well after coming across thin on first taste. Still feels and tastes creamy after an hour, which is the best thing I can say about it. Enjoyable but was expecting a lot more.
