Notes/Commercial Description:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Poured from a 750 mL brown bottle into a miniature snifter (6oz?). Purchased at Olive Tree Marketplace (San Diego, CA) for $11.49.

A: Black with soft 2-finger chocolate cake batter dark beige hue and consistency with exceptional retention and lacing.

S: The aroma is muted compared to the on-tap version with mostly dark fruit and roast aromas and only a mild-to-moderate whiff of coffee.

T: The flavor is also somewhat more subdued than I remember the on-tap version being with fig and raisin dark fruit aromas filled out with slight berry alcohol and soft undercurrent of coffee. It still swings pretty hard in all these qualities, but the bottled version still seems a little less. Hops are bittering but hop flavor is not the focus, maybe a little orange but not a whole lot else.

M: This was the most different of the two comparisons with pretty heavy carbonation despite the full body made for a strange coupling, although not bad just not as smooth as it could have been. Letting it sit for half an hour helped but still more fizzy than I wanted.

O: Certainly a very good stout but the fresh bottle was more boozy and less flavorful despite serving at around 55F. Enjoyed it but wish the coffee and the entire flavor and aroma profile was more intense.

750ml poured into sniffer

Pours out a deep opaque black with a big 3 fingers of light mocha colored head. Eventually fades tO a retentive 1/4 inch layer with a lot of spotty lace. Some legs noticeable as well.

Lots of booze and lots of deeply roasted, burnt malts. Not a whole lot else aside from a little creamy dark chocolate, bitter coffee, and hints of dark fruits. Some slightly solvent booze comes in the more it warms.

Again lots of deeply roasted burnt malt. Some booze. Bitter dark chocolate, some dark fruits and a bit of bitter coffee, but I was hoping for more of a coffee flavor. Hints of a cinnamon like spice as it warms.

Fairly thick and boozey, carbonation is about right.

A stand up impy stout but for the money id prolly take a few others before this. Still this is prolly an amazing beer with some barrel aging Or other special treatment. Hard to find many flaws with this beer.

Thanks to BigTomZ for the sweet extra. 2011 vintage, I believe. Tasted 19 October 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours very deep brown, black in the glass. Two fingers of thick coffee-brown head, a delicious color, slowly relaxing to a long-lasting foamy cap. Little peninsulas of lacing reaching out in the glassy ocean. Doesn't get much better than this.

Smell is awesome. Big, rich, and dark. Dominated by smooth, nutty coffee, and backed by chocolate. Reminds me in many good ways of Founders Breakfast Stout.

Taste is delightful as well. Lots of depth, very chocolatey. Coffee flavor is present, but subdued enough that other things can shine through. A touch of bitterness in the finish, but generally smooth and mellow with a chocolate punch.

Mouthfeel is solid. Thick, chewy, and mouth-filling. Medium-low carbonation, lots of little bubbles, turning it into tasty foam. Yum.

This is a really delicious, rich, sweet big stout. If it weren't so strong, I could drink a whole lot of it. And that reminds me, there's not even a hint that it's 12% - I'd believe it if someone told me it were half that. A very impressive beer, and one I wish I had consistent access to.

Poured in a 10oz glass at Neighborhood in San Diego, Calif. Reviewed from notes.

A- Finger and a half light brown-orange head. Several minute long retention. Black as night. No light breaks through. Lord have mercy.

S- Mocha, chocolate and heavy coffee scents. Scents and earthy smells.

T- Dark, heavy and sweet at first, but finishes bitter. Vinous taste as the alcohol pokes out. The mocha flavoring hides the 12 % quite well.

M- Vinous and wet, a product of the booze.

O- Wow. The hype wasn't far off. This is a powerful example of a delicious beer.

Poured from a 750ml bottle

A- pours a pitch black color... big tan head... stays for minutes.... very sticky lacing to the glass

S- bitter sweet chocolate front, roasty coffee grains...charcoal in the back... hint of anise with a little black liquorice funk

T- sweet bitter chocolate... coffee domincace... as I drink this the 12% presents itself...and quite a bit it does... lingering coffee roastyness

M- thick full body... creamy feel... oily on the tongue... prickly carbonation... bitter balance

O- one of the best imperial stouts out there... very rare in my area so when it's here... you better grab it....
