Notes/Commercial Description:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Deep dark brown color, just about black. It has a dense cinnamon colored head with great retention.

Smells like coffee, chocolate, and anise.

Very vivid flavors of coffee, chocolate, light roast, and black licorice. It has a nice balance of sweet and bitter. Abv is masked well.

Mouthfeel is amazingly soft and creamy.

It about nails it in everything I enjoy in a stout. Great mouthfeel, nice bitter/sweet dichotomy, high abv, and high drink ability.

When I was out in Arizona last week, I only wanted to buy beers that were from the Grand Canyon State. When I saw this one the shelf at the Total Wine in Tempe, I had to make an exception to that when I saw this on the shelf, since I wasn't able to buy this back east. Sure enough, this lived up to the hype, as the "motor oil" aspects of this beer made themselves apparent from start to finish!

The pour to this was very bold as the beer was nearly jet black, thick, and had a fluffy head of mousse-like head. This might have had the best lacing I've ever seen on a beer as it left rings after every sip that stuck to the sides of the glass I used. Lots of coffee and chocolate here but the strength in this beer comes from the apparent lack of booze and espresso flavors that make so many others of this type too strong up-front. The mouthfeel was on the silky side with good carbonation, leading to a rich body that didn't disappoint and held its own from start to finish.

By the time I finished this off, I could certainly feel the strength of this beer, even though it wasn't obvious after each refill. This one's a doozy but the alcohol is so well-hidden that it only became apparent in the end. No bitterness here as the chocolate was more in the milk side, leading to a smooth taste through the end. Darned shame I couldn't get a bottle of this to come home with me back east - this was worth the hype and then some!

A: Pours a jet black color with a huge three finger mocha colored head. Leaves lace high up the glass.

S: The smell isn't as big as I remember, but it's really fantastic. Smooth dark roasted coffee mixed with just a trace of booze. A rich blend of milk chocolate, Whoppers, caramel, earth and toffee.

T: Ohhh myyyy! Luscious dark roasted coffee mixed with intense dark chocolate. There's some brownie/fudge sweetness in the middle before a big espresso note. Just a hint of toffee as well in there before a finish of pure dark roasted coffee beans. The coffee flavor in here isn't as intense as a beer like KBS, but I think it's more refined. There's just a hint of warmness and a drying sensation on the finish that reminds you this is a big boy. I highly recommend drinking this just below room temp. It's a totally different animal when it's cold.
