Notes/Commercial Description:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Finally! I get the chance of trying this one out. Purchased off the shelf on 12-29-12

A: pour is completely black, and it pours a massive 2-3 fingers worth of frothy dark mocha head formation. the lacing is very nice and the nice bubbly film layer remains once the head dies down

S: alcohol soaked dark fruits, bitter dark chocolate, robust coffee grounds, alcohol burn, slight touch of tobacco. very nicely balanced brew.

T: alcohol, bold coffee, chocolate and more alcohol are pretty much the main players. leather, slight tobacco, and a burnt/smokiness is also present. in all honesty, I get only a slight sweetness....mostly during the burps!

M: for as dark as this beer is. i find it much too light. i find much too light and the alcohol destroys any nice flavors that could be left on the palate, its felt all over the upper gums, cheeks and palate.. i suppose there is a slight bitter dark chocolate but, i really have to pull for it.

O: im utterly shocked. for receiving such high reviews, this brew is extremely underwhelming. its an alcohol bomb....flat.... for being such highly ranked, i expect more out of a beer of this caliber.... its an average AD/IS. nothing special or great about it. I strongly feel this needs to be paired with food, or seriously aged.

.... is this a bad bottle/batch?.... glad i'm at least getting drunk

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. I've had this bottle a good while. At least a year.

Appearance - Jet black with an ample mocha head. Laces beautifully and retains some surface wisps.

Smell - Coffee with a slightly metallic aroma. Chocolate malts come through just slightly, but coffee is the most dominant aroma.

Taste - Coffee is extremely well blended. Blends with a deep burnt chocolate flavor. Enough sweetness to keep it balanced and not too bitter. Definite alcohol presence. Gives it a bright almost fruity finish with the bite.

Mouthfeel - Sharp alcohol, but otherwise thick, chewy, and delicious. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Solid, easy to get, delicious stout. Better fresh, it should be said.

Type: 750ml bottle
Glass: Stone pint glass
From: Holiday Wine Cellar
Price: $11.49
Misc.: Had on Dec. 25, 2012

Poured a pitch black color with 2-3 fingers of tan head that initially lasted for quite some time. Thick window-like lacing on the sides. Good retention all the way down with a lot of bubbles.

Smelled a great mix of dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, coffee and bitter coffee beans. Not as much coffee as I would have thought, but very pleasurable overall.

First thought once it hit my lips was how thick it was. Got much more coffee and coffee beans than the smell. Also dark chocolate, toffee and caramel. A lot more roastier than I anticipated after not getting much on the sniff. Could taste the 12 percent more on the way down. Deep, dark and lingering on the taste buds all the way down.

Full body. Thick texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Warming all the way down.

Just a great beer. I think it was just a tad overhyped, but I’m glad to finally give it a try. Great beer.

Bottle poured into a snifter, no dating but I think its around 6 months old.

A: Gorgeous pitch black color, the head was a thick creamy milk chocolate.

S: Huge, sweet milk chocolate aromas, heavy roasted malt, not too much coffee but some in the back. Some red grape, vinous, and dark fruit as well.

T: Big bold flavors of dark chocolate, and roasted malt, actually rather sweet tasting. Getting a burst of roast on the finish mixed with a lingering coffee flavor. Some alcohol warmth on the throat, little to no taste of heat though.

M: Thick, chewy, creamy, full bodied, huge beer.

O: Fantastic imperial. Huge brew, best split amongst two or three. I still prefer FBS as my favorite coffee stout but this is really nice.
