Notes/Commercial Description:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

Had this on 2012-05-17 in Columbia, PA

A - Opaque dark brown-black with a 2-finger light brown head and rich lacing.

S - Rich chocolate, espresso, molasses, dried black currant and dark roasted grain. Very nice smell even when initially served a bit to cool.

T - Sweet dark roasted grain, bitter chocolate, coffee, earthy spice, metallic, chalky, alcohol. The very long-lasting aftertaste is leafy, sweet/sour, dark-roasty and with significant bitterness.

M - Medium body and light carbonation. Creamy, rich but not as thick as I'd like. Some alcohol heat.

O - It's a good Imperial Stout but for my tastes, not in the same top-tier as Parabola, CBS, King Henry or Marshall Zhukov's.

750 bomber, bottled 2012

*100th review!

A- Pours an opaque jet black with a little over a finger of creamy mocha head with good retention. When brought up to the light can see tiny carbonation bubbles quickly rising along the side of the glass, definitely a little bit more carbonation then your average stout. Slight lacing.

S- Distinct smell of fresh espresso beans mixed with dark chocolate and some malts and booze hiding in the background.

T- Creamy espresso mixed with notes of dark chocolate nibs and a little bit of booze in the background. Nice sweet chocolate aftertaste.

M- Nice and creamy and smooth, not too syrupy. Medium bodied to a little bit heavy. Can definitely tell the alcohol is there, but goes down incredibly smooth for a beer of this abv. Very little alcohol burn. Not too much carbonation.

O- This was a great imperial stout, definitely one of my favorites. Everything about this beer was great- great espresso smell, nice sweet espresso/chocolate taste without being overly sweet, and an awesome creamy mouthfeel without getting too much of syrupy feel or alcohol burn. Great job by Alesmith. Would love to try the BA versions. At $17/bomber, this beer was a little bit pricey but definitely worth it.

750ml bottle served in a tulip.

pours a silky, deep black-brown with a thin mocha/tan toned head that quickly disspiates into a collar around the glass.

smell is alive with roasted malt, coffee, chocolatey goodness - wow! smells decadent... taste follows the nose, but less so than i had presumed; a bit disappointing considering the promise of the aroma. there's a ramped up bitterness to it that is not entirely pleasant... strong coffee flavors from the nose pull through; molasses; dark chocolate. 12% ABV very well hidden.

smooth mouthfeel, surprisingly a bit thin, with low carbonation. i would definitely have another, and a finely crafted brew this is, though in the final analysis i'd put it a step behind my favorite imperial stouts... IMO not sure it lives up to the substantial hype that it garners.

Poured into a tulip glass

AleSmith's Speedway Stout is, perhaps, the richest imperial stout I've had in memory. While it boasts an intense roast and chocolate character, the obvious ethanol detracts a bit from my total enjoyment of this beer. Still, quite good, and one I would gladly seek out again if it were available.

Pours a 1cm head of very dark tan, fine bubbles. Head recedes within a minute or two to a thin ring around the glass. Ample lacing along sides of tulip glass, complementing the totally opaque, black body. Carbonation streams slowly along sides of the glass.

Aroma is very rich, expressive in roasted character, milk chocolate, dark roast coffee beans, and ethanol.

Taste follows scent closely, offering strong roasted malt flavors, creamy milk chocolate, mild roasted coffee beans, and perhaps a hint of vanilla. Ethanol is noticeable from mid-palate onwards, and is actually rather obvious to me. This detracts somewhat from my enjoyment of the beer, as my goal isnt to necessarily drink ethanol flavor. Still, this packed an immense amount of rich, delicious flavor into each sip and I am impressed by this.

Beer is extremely thick and heavy, perhaps one of the heaviest beers I've drunk. Carbonation is moderate, but still can't truly penetrate this highly viscous brew. Pretty incredible, thick and smooth, somewhat silky, mouthfeel results. Drawback is ethanol burn and heat, felt clearly in the nostrils and the back of the throat. Finish is dry and slightly sticky from small amounts of residual sugars.

Poured black with a finger of dark tan head. Aroma dominated by espresso with some mild roasty cocoa notes.

Moderate carbonation and a full, creamy mouthfeel, not overly heavy. Espresso and caramel up front with some molasses, hints of vanilla, and cocoa mixed with coffee bitterness on the tail end.

Drank quite easily for the ABV. Definitely tasty but I didn't feel like it was absolutely outstanding.

750 ml bottle poured into a snifter.

A - Pours black with a thick, dense two finger mocha head. Great retention and a leaves beautiful complete lacing.

S - Rich, roasty aroma. Some bitter coffee, vanilla, and sweet milk chocolate.

T - Very bold flavor. Lots of coffee and dark fruit sweetness. Significant bitterness on the finish. The alcohol is noticeable in the throat at the beginning, but this fades over time.

M - Good carbonation and a medium feel.

O - I have been waiting a while to try this one. I was impressed by the aroma and found the flavor to be very good. There was nothing that really set this one apart from the vast sea of double stouts out there. Very good, not exceptional.
