Notes/Commercial Description:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

On tap at AleSmith tasting room.

A: Impenetrable brown, darkish film of brown head which recedes to a ring and some swirls layered on the surface of the beer. The head is exceptionally fine and persists for the entire glass. The lacing coats the entire wall of the glass. Exceptional appearance for the style.

S: Big coffee with a little sweetness, blending beautifully with some smoke and dark chocolate undertones. Phenomenal.

T: Decadent coffee, again some dark chocolate and roasted notes underneath, with a mild espresso finish which peters out slowly. Slightly off dry.

M: Medium carbonation and full body. The carbonation adds a velvet smooth mouthfeel to the full body. Leaves a little sticky residue on your lips.

O: Glorious, decadent, and delicious. Coffee forward without crossing the line into oblivion. Not a whiff of alcohol is evident. Gorgeous.

Enjoyed in a snifter

A: pours a deep deep black that is impenetrable, pours with two fingers of fine milk chocolate head that lingers a bit and leaves a nice amount of very thin lacing
S: coffee, dark chcolate and slight berry scent
T: deep and intense coffee and chcolate malts, very smooth and tastey
M: pretty thick, smooth and creamy, leaves the mouth feeling like its got some thick chocolate on it
O: loved it

Served at cellar temp.

A: Dark brown like a dark chocolate Hershey bar. Tan colored creamy head.

S: Roasty and semi-sweet chocolate.

T: Big chocolate, caramel and roasted toffe notes that give way to hints of coffee.

M: Heavy bodied. Medium carbonation.

I: Great non-barrel aged stout. One of my favorite standards stouts. I wish it was distributed to MI.

A 750 mL bottle sent by FluffyMcTingles; thank you for this want! Opened as part of a small stout tasting, and poured into a 5 oz. snifter. Reviewed from notes taken 01/03/2012.

Typical black body with a good amount of brown head; moderate retention and a small amount of lacing to round it out.

The aroma places an emphasis on the coffee, with caramel, chocolate, brown sugar, and vanilla to round it out. Very well balanced and inviting. I have "Very nice!" written down in the margin, so I think I liked it.

Taste is of coffee, a nice mocha essence from the chocolate, vanilla, cacao, caramel, and faint alcohol. I had been warned of the ethanol presence in this fresh bottle, but decided to crack it open anyway; not disappointed in the choice, but would love to revisit a slightly older bottle.

Mouthfeel is rich and thick, with a bit of a syrupy texture that coats the mouth. A slight ethanol burn on the finish.

Overall, a great integration of the coffee into a solid stout. As I mentioned, I'd love to try this again with a bit of age on it to hopefully let some of the alcohol mellow, but I really enjoyed this one fresh as well.

Finally got around to trying this. From City Beer in SF.

A: Jet-, pitch-, -as night, back in-, -hole. Light does not escape nor pierce this beauty. A 3-finger mocha head off the pour, laying down to a peerless cm overcoat. Decent webbed lacing.

S: Dense, dark, bittersweet cocoa malt blast--just what you want with an AIS--sits atop a foundation of dark fruits, boozy warmth, and a coffee kick (was waiting for that). I get some buttery notes as it warms.

T: Very similar to the nose, but with a hop blanket towards the finish which brings a lot of balance. Cocoa, vanilla, dark fruits, hay, a ton o' booziness (which blends well), coffee, butter, and biscuity notes. Extremely complex and layered. The coffee is not nearly as pronounced as one would expect from what's supposed to be a coffee-forward stout, but this doesn't diminish its greatness. It's fantastic. Wowzers.

M: Creamy and chewy as hell, with very little carbonation and a ferociously dry finish, like chewing on a cocoa nib. The ABV is front and center as well. No heater needed when drinking this beast of a stout.

Believe the hype folks.

Pours pitch black, no light comes through. Beautiful head, decent retention.

Nose is coffee, slight alcohol. Generous coffee, espresso, damn!

Taste is huge malt, dense espresso, brown sugar, molasses, little sour, licorice. Hugely satisfying. No alcohol, which is surprising, considering the ABV.

Sticky, warming and very satisfying brew. Unbelievable, would definitely buy again.
