Notes/Commercial Description:
Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won't fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

750 ml bottle was poured into a tulip glass. Review #700 folks.

Appearance: This beer poured a two finger mocha head. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or vision of bubbles seen coming up through the glass. The head has reduced somewhat to a puffy layer and left some nice lacing on the glass. More lacing all the way down the glass.

Smell: Molasses, smoke, caramel, toffee, roasted coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, warm boozy alcohol, a little tobacco, and dark fruit.

Taste: Really roasted espresso like coffee, bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts, raisins, smoke, caramel, toffee, tobacco, warm boozy alcohol, and some bitterness from the coffee. Cool stuff.

Mouthfeel: Creamy smooth, full bodied, warming, mild bitterness, very drinkable, low to medium carbonation, and delicious.

Overall: Pretty awesome beer for my 700th review. Ill take it towards the top 250. That list is virtually impossible, but over time, I could see myself making it past 150.

22oz bomber served in a tulip glass.

A: Opaque with an interesting creamy, cappuccino like head that sticks in spots on the side of the glass.

S: Toffee sweetness and roasted malts on the nose.

T: Chocolate and malt flavor up front, then some caramel sweetness balanced with bitterness from the coffee. Hints of nutmeg and spice become more noticeable as the taste lingers on your tongue.

M: Great carbonation. Super smooth and creamy body. Wonderful warming sensation on the throat.

O: At 12%, it's a very approachable and drinkable stout. It's mellow (ironic since it's a coffee stout) in a good way, with the sum of the parts being stronger than the individual components.

I'll be interested to try the same bottle in a year, as I imagine this beer will age nicely.

I am going to preface this review by saying that I am not convinced this was an entirely healthy bottle of Speedway Stout.

While this beer looked okay, it poured nice and had a nice off white head that gave way to nice lacing, this is where the high points ended for this experience.

Smell wise, there was coffee and anise...very strong anise. This was almost overpowering. The taste was also very heavy on anise or licorice. Roast and coffee were also prominent but the anise was very front and center.

From a mouth feel perspective the beer had a medium feel and a moderate to low amount of carbonation.

Overall, not what I expected or wanted. That is why I am concerned that this was not a healthy bottle. I just did not experience the smells, flavors and feel that most other reviewers have shared. I would like to believe this was one bad experience. I will try again and rereview.

It doesn't get more black than this. An inch of creamy mocha head boasts a good level of retention. After a few swirls, dots of lace stick on top of the alcohol film that coats the sides of the glass. A big looking beer indeed.

A combination of every flavour you expect in a big stout is amplified and bold. There's plenty of booze soaked raisins and dates. The alcohol accentuates their sweetness. Dark chocolate rich in cocoa is all over everything. A roasted quality from the coffee beans is more pronounced than the coffee beans themselves. There's even a bit of smoke in there as well.

The sweet dark fruits come in at the front of the tongue, quickly sliding under dark chocolate and cocoa powder which make up the first impression. Its initial dryness is enhanced by the roasty coffee character that comes next. There's a splash of sweet alcohol in the finish. Its presence is made known not so much in the flavour as it is in the warming sensation it imparts in the middle of your chest.

The body and feel on this stout are exceptional. It's silky, it's creamy, it's rounded, and its very, very drinkable. Its 12% ABV is masterfully hidden. I think out of everything great that's going on in this beer, its feel is what speaks most about the level of skill and craftsmanship the brewers at Alesmith possess.

This is a straight shooting, albeit incredibly flavourful Imperial stout that goes down with ease. It sticks to the archetypal flavours you come to expect with the style (chocolate, roasty, coffee, and smoky) but it blends them together in perfect harmony and packages them in a form that makes it dangerously easy to drink. This is an outstanding interpretation of the style and worth every penny.
