Had this on Nitro Tap at City Beer in SF. This was my first ever IPA on Nitro. The Nitro made a great beer even better by smoothing out the hoppiness and providing the milky start that nitro lovers love. If you see it on Nitro tap, I highly recommend you pull the trigger.

I have always walked past this. I can't believe what I've been missing. Out of bottle into tulip, fat bubbles, lots of fluffly white head. Nose is filled with fresh hops, if I am not mistaken, amarillo hops. Earthyness, and slight citrus. Tastes of fresh amarillo hops, sweet, grapefruit, and grass. Mouthfeel, light and bubbly. Full flavor and refreshing. Overall. . . Holy crap. This beats pliny IMO. Especially for the price. I will definitely be picking this up on a regular basis.

Pours a light golden yellow with a thin white head. Smell is citrusy and piney with a hint of sweetness. Taste follows the nose for the most part. Tropical fruit comes through a bit more as well. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Carbonation is what you'd expect from an IPA. Overall this is a great west coast IPA. I kinda wish Alesmith sold 12oz bottles though. I'd imagine Alesmith would be much more popular if they did.

22 oz bottle, bottled on 1/6/14. Pours clear light copper with a big frothy off white head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet caramel malt, tropical fruit and dank piney hops.

The flavor is sweet bready caramel malts with tropical fruits and a lot of dank resiny hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with slightly spritzy carbonation.

Overall, a very solid IPA.

Pours a golden amber with a decent lacy white head.
Aroma is distinctly grapefruit and pine with a hint of woodsy hops and slight malt.

Taste is smooth and crisp, very floral/citrus/resin hoppiness with the slightest whisper of a malt undertone that evens it out in the middle but lets the bitterness take over again for the finish.

Quite a bit of lacing in the glass.
A very nice IPA...not enough to convert me to an IPA fan though. (Pliny the Elder anyone??)

Bright orange with a frothy white head. Top notch retention. There was a decent amount of remaining head even as I finished the glass. Heavy lacing.

Heavily aromatic. Mostly orange and pine. Pineapple and grapefruit.

Same flavors. Juicy citrus and resinous pine. Both are vibrant.

Fresh and clean mouthfeel. Moderately bitter.

It's such a fantastic IPA. Aromas and flavors are clean and pronounced, plus it's a real looker.

Poured into a Samuel Smith pint glass from the bomber, but the poor pint glass couldn't handle all the effervescence and massive head this beer offers. There's a huge amount of carbonation, resulting in a head overflow and a round, derby-like shape that juts out above the glass. The beer is light copper in color with almost complete transparency. A real beaut.

I get lots of citrus on the nose, then piney, hoppy, resinousness. There's a good amount of sweet, vanilla-heavy malt present too. I can tell this beer is going to be good. Now let's drink.

Wow, this is surprisingly smooth and understated for an IPA. Granted, I picked this up in Tucson and it's already got about 3 months of age on it, so some of the hop flavor has probably dissipated, but this beer seems to be on the mellow end of the IPA spectrum. There's plenty of bitterness there still, particularly at the finish, and the medium-body is accentuated by a spicy hop bite. As far as flavor from the hops, I'm getting more piney hops than citrus, although at the finish I get some grapefruit peel.

I find this beer to my quite tasty and easy to drink, although I'll be the first to acknowledge I need to try a fresher version. Still, I think it says something about this beer that it can be so tasty, aromatic, and enjoyable after three months.

Poured a 22oz. bottle into a Sam Adams custom.

A: Color is a burnt orange to light amber, and the pour produces an off-white, yellowish craggy head at 2 fingers with good retention and a sticky lace.

S: Light toasty malt, some graham cracker. The hop embellishments are on the resiny and citrusy side with subtle tropical fruit like pineapple and mangoes, maybe even a little peach.

T: A lot going here: The malt base light and toasty, bready, a slight hint of sweetness like graham crackers. Then there is a gentle hop bitterness that creeps in but is then upstaged by a middle act from the malt...tropical fruit and some creaminess. But then the finish leaves a pleasant hop bitterness on the palate with remaining traces of the complex malt.

M: Very light carbonation, medium-light body and a tightly woven texture.

O: This is one of the most unique but well-balanced IPAs that I have had. Relatively incredible. I would pair this with any sweet-spicy dish with pineapple, like pineapple-chicken skewers or other Hawaiian fair.

Had this beer multiple times but it has been a while so it's time for revisit/review.

Beautiful dark gold with 2 inch head that sticks around nicely.

Aroma is pretty subtle as far as IPA go, pine with light tropical fruits.

Taste is pretty awesome. Huge bitterness that is balanced out by the malt just when you think it's going to go too far. Piney, earthy hop flavors dominate with subtle tropical fruits in the background.

Dry bitter finish with a medium to medium full body.

Overall an awesome traditional west coast IPA. If you only like super fruity IPAs this one may not be your favorite but anyone that appreciates IPAs as a diverse style will love it.

A: A light amber color with almost 2 finger white head. Decent lacing
S: Upon cracking the bottle I was immediately basking in hoppy scents. Poured it gives off a piney, citrusy hoppy fragrance.
T: After the joyous smell I was hoping for a lot and was slightly disappointed. Still has a pine, grapefruit almost orange hoppiness but it is not nearly as strong as the smell would seem to indicate. Has a nice sweet malt finish.
M: Very nice carbonation gives it a medium bodied feel with a bit of effervescence.
O: Very drinkable beer. I'm glad it comes in a nice big bottle because I will be ready for more. Not quite as powerful in taste as other IPAs I would put in its class but respectable.

S: Orange and pineapple in the nose.

T: Lemon and orange come through first, a bit bitter, but no more than a decent IPA should be. Pineapple is unfortunately not very present in the flavor, which is a disappointment after the nose.

M: Medium bodied, not overly or harshly carbonated.

O: This was one of my first IPAs, and I still love it. Nose is better than flavor, but definitely worth a try.

A 22 ounce bomber poured into a Nonic Imperial Pint glass. The bottle was dated 12/05/13. I love silk-screened labels.

Appearance - A hazy copper color. Big, lumpy head that stays around for a while. Very good stickage on the side of the glass. A fine looking IPA.

Smell - Big hop hit. Grapefruit. Slightly sour. There is a whiff of malt sweetness in the distant background.

Taste - Bitter. Hoppy. Grapefruit. Peppercorns.

Mouth - Fizzy. Bitter.

Overall - This is a good, but not great, IPA. The beer lacks a solid malt foundation to build upon. As a result, the beer has a bitter yet thin feel to it. It lacks the overall balance of a Sierra Nevada or Firestone IPA. I am, however, giving this beer the benefit of the doubt because it hails from San Diego. Also, the bomber bottle is very cool.

Poured 22oz bottle dated 11/22/13 into New Belgium globe

A-Pours a clear golden orange with two finger bright white sticky head. Great lacing.

S-Bright, clean aroma of fresh hops with pine, grapefruit and tangerine notes.

T-Flavors are less sweet and has a crisp, tingly fresh carbonated aspect that competes with its bitter hop dimension.

M-Light body, great carbonation that fizzes continue ally into your mouth, sticky with dry sweet bitter finish. Strong yet balanced, taste lingers long after finish.

O-This a great San Diego IPA by Alesmith I need to get more from them

22oz serving out of a bottle that pours a clean golden copper color with a healthy two fingers of off-white foam. Big citrus upfront with a bready dank hoppy finish. Taste is a very hop forward citrus blend, with malty middle, and a sweet bitterness in the finish. Over all a terrific, true to form, west coast IPA. A beer that is readily available, consistent, and time in a time out a great go to beer.

S: I can't fault the beer for my weak nose but I only picked up some hop notes.

T: Good golly ms Molly the clear hop flavor on top of a breast malt back is so damn good.

M: perfect carbonation and not an oily alcohol sludge.

Presentation: Very classy bottle that is simple yet surprisingly eye-catching. All label information and graphics have been painted on. Front label gives ABV info and a bit of brewery info. Back label has the AleSmith logo(Anvil with Pint on top), gives a short description of beer, back story on the beer, glassware recommendation, serving temp recommendation, and web info. Neck label states IPA and has AleSmith logo. Cap has AleSmith logo.

Appearance: Aggressively poured from its 22oz brown bomber bottle into a 16oz nonic pint that led to a 3 finger off white airy head atop a semi clear golden honey color beer. Head slowly fades to a rocky thick coating and ring with tremendous lacing. Head retention was 5min.

Smell/Aroma: Smell is earthy with the scent of ruby red grapefruit and a bit of pine hops. Smells is refreshing.

Flavor/Taste: Tastes of piney/resin and a nutty malts on the front end with a sweet citrus hop flavor and bready malt midpoint. Sweet citrus and nutty malts dominate the finish with a piney/resin hop bitter aftertaste. Very unique and interesting.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Medium carbonation leads to a medium bodied smooth mouthfeel. Very drinkable and refreshing!

Overall/Comments: This was my first AleSmith offering and I was very impressed. This IPA had such a unique flavor profile and was very well done. If you can find this I would recommend trying it! Classified as an American IPA @ 7.25%. Consumed 6/23/2013.

A- Pours a clean, translucent, light copper with a 2 finger near white head. Magnificent retention and lacing. I'll just say it...there just aren't many IPAs out there that look better than this one.

S- Big tropical and citrus hops on the nose. Grapefruit and mango lead the way. Some lemon as well maybe. Straight forward on the nose. Solid again.

T- Hop forward for sure. The normal IPA waves with tons of citrus that the nose identified, followed by a sweet middle that attempts to give the beer a hint of balance (and I love that it fails to get all the way there), and finished off with some lingering bitterness. Just not a lot of flaws

M- Light and somewhat slick/oily, but in part due to the impressive amount of hop oils at work here. No booziness to speak of. Crisp, bitter aftertaste.

O- Old fashioned, west coast style IPA that terrorizes the taste buds with west coast hops. Hard to find a better beer with a spicy pizza

22oz bomber served in pint glass. Beer is a brilliant, crystal clear golden color, with a fat, foamy white head. Big, floral and Cascadey aroma. Flavor is similarly bright and hoppy, with a really pleasant grapefruit/citrus taste. Very smooth in mouthfeel, like an English IPA, with a creamy, almost oily, finish. No coincidence: lace is already forming on the glass. This is a great Left Coast American IPA. Aggressive and strong, but delicious and pleasant enough to be a standard bearer for the category.

A: Pours a very slightly hazed golden/orange color. A perfectly formed white head rises to two fingers. The rock head has excellent retention and rings of lace are left all the way down.
S: Orange rind, citrus, floral and grassy hops burst at the seems. Just enough biscuit and caramel malt to balance everything out. I love how the fruity/juicy/orange hops mingles with the malty sweet background.
T: Like the nose, and excellent balance of orange and juicy hops with the sweet caramel malts. A light bready malt character as well plays underneath everything. Though the hops pop with incredible flavor and balance.
M/D: A medium to full body. Very effervescent, crisp, but smooth at the same time. Very clean as well. Don't kid yourself, this is a big beer at over 7%. Though so enjoyable.

I am not a hop head at all, though this is really well made. Incredible balance, but at the same time amazing hop flavor. Highly recommended.

Pours by extremely clear, bright amber with thick, frothy off-white head. Aroma is grassy, floral, and dank hops, biscuit and cereal malts, pine resin, and light citrus fruit. Flavor is a great balance of dry malt base, grassy and pine hops, light citrus esters, and faint caramel sweetness; dry finish with just a touch of bitterness. Medium body and low carbonation.

Bottle into Tulip

Appearance- clear golden, nice white head, good lacing

Aroma- Very dense tropical hops, grapefruit, mango, pine, slight malt backbone

Flavor- A little more pine here, and less tropical, firm bitterness throughout but drinks easy, maybe a slight alcohol warmth, very nice

Mouthfeel- Medium, good carbonation

Overall- First AleSmith beer and I'm impressed Bottled a little over a month ago. Bitter, tropical juicy, and piney. More than solid IPA.
