On tap at Gingerman in NYC on 8/6/12, served in a tulip.

Pour: Light amber, slightly orange with a finger and a have cream/white head. Leaves excellent lacing.

Smell: Pine, orange, grapefruits. Some caramel sweetness in there too,

Taste: Lots of the same from the nose, with pine resin, grapefruit being the main hop show. Really substantial caramel sweetness, that balances well.

Mouthfeel: Pretty drinkable, and not overly bitter or sweet.

Overall: Pretty solid IPA, but not one I'd make my go to.

We pour a brew of reddish honey. It holds a one finger head, but this is brief. It is creamy and comes back with a quick swirl, leaving chunky, spotted lacing around the glass. An even haze appears throughout, with light flecks of sediment. Carbonation appears average. The aroma is resiny, with twigs and raw bark, earthy and grassy hops, and mineral and stone. Cherry and pear sweetness pierce the hops, with pales malts and hints of chocolate milk darkness on the far back. Our first impression is that there is nice leafiness and earth to the hop flavoring. As we sip, citrus and earth pour into our mouths. There is acid and lactics, mixing with muddy, pale, and chalky malts. Nothing really yet dominates. The middle moves with sweetness of white sugar, with more honey at the peak. A quick bitterness of dirty citric hop rind comes through, pulling us to the finish with mineral puckering sours, and pale malts to wash. The aftertastes breathes of very bitter, hollow hops, light florals, a faint chemically phenolic bite, and spice of booze. The body is medium, but the beer has a satisfying syrupy thickness, while the carbonation is stinging. There is soft slurp, froth, cream, and smack to each sip, with a drying astringent finish. Eventually the mouth is cooled, with a soft wetness. The abv is getting up there, and the beer drinks easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was how fresh and earthy everything was. The malts also showed an interesting variety in the nose, with a surprising darkness at times. The beer is ultimately very refreshing and nice to the style, but becomes a bit muddy through the flavoring and not as crisp due to the booziness at the end, which is otherwise well hidden.

IPA Day 2012

A - Clear gold, white cap that has good retention and some lacing.

S/T - Heavy on the pine hops with some grapefruit, backed up by a caramel, slightly bready malt base. Finishes slightly abrasive with resinous hops.

M - Something's a little off here. Medium to light in body, but feels overcarbonated with an inconsistent mouthfeel/smoothness.

O - Taste and smell are good, but the mouthfeel felt off kind of took away from the quality.

From: Wally's Wine and Spirits, Los Angeles, CA
Date: None listed
Glass: Tulip

Pours a 2cm head of fairly clean, white foam, made up of small, dense bubbles. This fades to a 0.5cm cap atop the beer throughout the drinking session, leaving substantial lacing while doing so. Body is golden orange in color, transparent, with plenty of active carbonation.

Aroma of peaches, lemon rind, grapefruit rind, apricots, with a mix of malts as well. Pleasant, upfront, and substantial, this is enjoyable and worth repeat exposure.

Tasting opens with darker-than-pale malt flavors that quickly transitions to pine resin and grapefruit bitterness. Mid-palate continues malt body, combined with grapefruit bitterness, citrus-like fruit, and pine resin. Nice flash of tart bitterness in back of palate, leading to a lingering bitterness in close, with hints of apricot, peach, and grapefruit.

Beer is medium-bodied with just enough carbonation to foam this up pleasantly on the palate, leading to a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Finish is expectedly dry.

Thanks to ObeMaltKinobe for this bomber. Into a Fuller's nonic.

A: Slightly hazy orange with a dense foamy white cap that recedes to a thin layer. Excellent lacing left behind.

S: Resinous hops, lots of juicy grapefruit, mango, peaches and pine. Lots and lots of hops. A touch of a caramel malt profile and a slight graininess, overall smells hoppy and dank. Killer stuff.

T: Follows the nose nicely with a ton of huge hoppy resins and bitterness. Nice tropical fruit flavors mixed in with the citrus and pine. Enough bitterness to break the beer up and keep you coming back for more. Love the lingering hop resins.

M: Medium body, nicely dry, crisp, carbonation is spot on.

O: Another killer IPA out of SoCal, awesome stuff that I wish I had regular access to.
