On Tap at Blue Dog

A- Alesmith IPA has a copperish yellow color with traces of orange throuout. A one inch tan head stuck around for a while leaving some lines of foam on the glass. A bunch of bubbles are seen floating to the top.

S- A bit of toasted caramel malts bursting from the glass. A lot of citrus hops also giving off a slighty pungent pine smell. Some grassy notes. A lot of floral aroma and i gathered the hops were the dominate factor in this IPA go figure.

T- A resinous piney taste up front but over time more of the citrusy hop flavors come into play. Some pineapple and mango. Bready malts come through to the rescue giving the palette a break from the bitterness and floral taste. The alcohol is slightly in the taste.

M- This is medium bodied with a nice bittering effect to it from the hops. Some crispness comes from the carbonation but I prefer the over carbing of alesmith IPA bottles.

D- Not a session ale at 7.25% but i could drink 2-3 of these if I had them available. This is very drinkable even though i'm not blown away by the taste. A good American IPA that I prefer out of a fresh bottle.

A-amber color with slight murkiness and an off-white head and good lacing

S-citrus and pine with some grass and roasted malt

T-grapefruit and pine with malt following and a bitter hop finish

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, pretty dry finish

O-a solid IPA, but several I prefer over this one and at a lesser cost as well

bottle into a tulip glass

a: deep honey color, reddish orange. non-existent head with a single thin lace that happened to appear as I held up the glass to look at the color better.

s: subdued grapefruit/citrus. slight resin

t: medium body, light carb. not assertive at the front, but leaves with a distinct lingering bitterness. light on the maltiness

o: decent beer, but lacking some of the sweet counter-point to the hop profile.

First time trying this, 22 ounce bomber

A: Gold, nice frothy head, tons of lacing, looks on par for the style.

S: Pine bomb. All I smell is overwhelming pine and a little sweetness at the close.

T: This is one of the driest beers out there. Puckering dryness, pine tree flavor, sort of like licking a tree. Not very balanced, some sweetness at the close. Not much of a citrus or fruit presence.

M:The dryness is a bit overwhelming , I find it distracting . The water tastes very clean, but too dry for my taste

O: Have to admit I was underwhelmed with this and a bit disappointed stylistically. It's clearly a well crafted beer, but too one dimensionally hoppy and dry for my taste. I prefer Stone or Green Flash for a San Diego IPA fix.

1 pint 6oz bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It our deep gold to amber in color. It has three inches of off white head that stick to the sides of the glass.

S - I get the typical citrus smells along with some pine. I also get whiffs of some tropical fruits.

T - The taste is pretty much what you would expect from a west coast Indian pale ale. It has some citrus upfront that gives way to resin laden pine.

M - Moderate

O - A prototypical west coast ipa. Good if that is what you are into. I still have a regional bias to the midwest ipa's. Sorry left coast. I can think of three Michigan and three Ohio ipa's I like better. Plus I can get them fresher.

Clear amber with a large lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, pine, a bit of earthiness and some faint citrus notes. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of sweet carmel, earthiness and pine with a lingering moderatly bitter finish. A very drinkable and well balanced IPA
