Thinking, in particular, of the cask version of this, which offers a kaleidoscope of smell, stratospheric fruitiness, with enough citric bite to bring it back down to earth. Nice and bitter on the palate. Been too long since I had a fresh bottle/pint of the non-cask version. Will report back once I have. In the meanwhile, if you ever see this on cask, give it a whirl -- I thought it translated incredibly well. (413 characters)

Pours hazy gold with a large head.
Nose shows pine, resinous hops and a fair whack of sweet clean malt.
More pine and resinous notes as flavours along with some grapefruit and sweet clean malt. Finishes with an assertive, lasting bitterness. (241 characters)

Wow. I wasn't expecting what this beer delivered. Should have expected it coming from Alesmith. Citrus notes, great hop bitterness, and solid body make this an exceptional IPA. (176 characters)

Smell: Citrus, tropical fruit and piney hops

Taste: Tropical and citrus fruits up front, with some piney hops and bready caramel malts

Mouthfeel: Nice medium body, good carbonation

Overall: Another fantastic San Diego IPA. Excellent brew from an excellent brewery (334 characters)

Poured from a 22oz bottle with a bottled on date of 12/11/14; into a pint glass (per the recommendation on the bottle).
Appearance - golden, clear and bubbly with a thick, fluffy white head. Lacing is decent.
Smell - mouth watering grapefruit and tangerine; very dank, very powerful!
Taste - hop bomb with delicious citrus fruit flavors!
Feel - very bitter but not over the top due to the fruity sweetness!
Overall - superb IPA; if you're a fan of the style, then you'll love this beer! (487 characters)

Really good initial hoppy taste. Pretty hoppy and just the right amount of maltyness. It's kind of like lagunitas Maximus but with more malts. The only problem is the finish, there is an unpleasant bite on my palette (216 characters)

A: clear; deep gold colored; with a fairly aggressive pour, a 3 finger ivory head that receded slowly to a thick cap; patchy lacing;

S: earthy; pine; a bit of tropical fruit in the background;

T: follows the nose; very little bitterness;

M: a little thin; moderate carbonation;

O: OK, but for me there are other IPAs I prefer; (330 characters)

Poured into an IPA glass from a 22 oz bomber.

Color is clear gold with a massive white head. Great retention and lacing. Smell is tropical and fruity. Very nice. Flavor is mango, pineapple with some grapefruit rind. Malt is hidden, but balanced. Finish is crisp and bitter. Body is medium with a ample carbonation.

Overall, a fantastic IPA with a great hop profile. (374 characters)

Pours a medium copper color with a single-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves some spotty lacing.
The aroma is pine and grapefruit and orange pith with, perhaps a hint of toffee beneath.
Taste is citrus up front with pine following a a bit of sweetness followed by a long-lasting and drying bitter.
Mouthfeel is medium and slightly sticky.
Overall, really tasty IPA. (377 characters)

Appearance: Bright and clear gold. Great cloudy white head with great retention and lacing.

Nose: Grapefruit, citrus, and tangerine. Nice herbs and pine.

Taste: Great malt and hop balance. Malt lingers around and coats your tongue. Initial crisp and dry, fresh piney hops.

Notes: Just exactly what you want in an IPA. (329 characters)

22 oz bottle was poured into a nonic glass.

Appearance: A two finger head was poured that reduced to a thin puffy layer. It is a pale orange yellow color with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Super frothy lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Nice citrus, grapefruit, tangerine, herbal, and piney hops with caramel and bready malts to finish things out.

Taste: The hops are juicy smooth rolling right off your tongue and you have a nice malt base to even things out. Got tastier as it warmed and this beer grew on me with every sip too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium bodied, medium carbonation, slight bitterness, and a little chewy.

Overall: A hard find here in the Boston area. No bottle dating and hard to know how long it has sat on the shelves. Either way, I'd have to say the beer was somewhat fresh and the hops held up nice. I'll go back to the same store and get another bottle. (948 characters)

Partially translucent light orange with a pretty foamy white head that fades around the edges. Some cute bubbly lacing.

Strong nose of citrus, tropical fruits and a great piney character.

Bitter grapefruit taste mixes well with medium bodied bready malt. Pine forest flavor is there with mandarin orange. Great texture. Perfect balance of crisp carbonation and smoothness makes it very drinkable. (399 characters)

Pours a light copper color. Citrusy nose with some pine notes as well. Nice balanced flavor but a little light in the hop department even for a single IPA. (155 characters)

This beer pours a lovely amber color with a decent bit of foam. The nose is well balanced with a strong malt presence and some nice, piney hops. The nose is fairly malty. The taste is very clean, and has a nice does of piney hops. The beer is quite clean and the bitterness does not linger unpleasantly on the tongue.

This is a very nice IPA, one of my favorites. Very clean, very piney and with a nice malt backbone. (424 characters)

Clear orange amber and foamy off-white head with great retention. Big grapefruit and pine aroma. Pine resin and moderate bittering slightly balanced by a citrus sweetness. Fairly light lingering grassy bitterness. Moderate carbonation and heavy feel.

Fairly balanced IPA at the beginning but what bittering there is takes over the flavor and just leaves a tacky, resinous feel lingering with you. (397 characters)

Pours a light yellow color with a one finger thick white head. Smells of pine, pineapple, mango, orange peel, the slight burn of alcohol. Taste is grapefruit and a lingering resin bitterness. (194 characters)

Nose: Pine and citrus nose over malt.
Brilliant copper amber under a thick, finely bubbled, persistent slightly off-white foam cap.
The palate in this hop forward beer starts with biscuit malt seasons with light caramel and then the citrusy pine takes over. The citrus , melon and pineapple notes on the palate seem more from the hops than yeast.
Creamy medium body with medium high carbonation with a very fine bead. (417 characters)

A: Dark, dehydrated urine color. 1 finger of head on top with fluffy, laced foam

S: Fresh grass, melon, mango, a little bit of lemon and pine

T: NIce clean hoppy ipa. Not too bitter, not too malty, just right. Mango in the beginning and a little hoppy bite at the end. Little bit of bitterness that tastes like grapefruit pith.

M: Slight carbonation with a slight bitterness that lingers for a few seconds.

O: This is a great IPA. After having it a 2nd time, I've upped my rating from a 4 to a 4.5. I really enjoyed this much better after having it before and now I'm glad that the stores nearby carry it locally. (624 characters)

22oz bottle into tulip.

A - Hazy orange copper with a dense white head.

S - Huge mango and tropical fruit aroma. Amazing.

T - A blast of juicy tropical fruit and dank, earthy hops. Somewhat bitter. Spectacular.

M - Medium-full body, smooth, dry. Sticky.

O - This is no doubt one of the best beers brewed in the U.S. A quintessential west coast IPA. (354 characters)

Pours a clear, golden body with two finger head and sticky lace that leaves patches as it slowly dies.
Aroma is classic citric hops with sharpness and bit of soap and really a "west coast aroma".
Well balanced as this is a lot hop of hops but doesn't nuke my tongue and is an easy drinker that is hop heavy but with a touch of sweetness.
One of those IPAs that you could drink anytime. (385 characters)

On Draft at Spokeasy Public House

A: Pours a golden orange, a little hazy, with a nice amount of frothy white head that fades

S: Surprisingly malty caramel sweetness up front with a nice hit of citrus hops following. Not what I was expecting

T: That's more like it, big citrus hop punch; orange, grapefruit, maybe even a little tropical fruit and floral notes in there too, nice malt backbone that comes out as it warms, grapefruit and pine bitterness on the finish

M: Medium body, just enough carbonation to keep the palate fresh

O: Might not be my favorite, but it shows why it's earned a reputation as a classic San Diego IPA. Very solid brew. (651 characters)

a. honey orange in color with three finger head. Head calmed down to one finger that lasted. beautiful color that is cloudy, but you can see through. Lacing on glass is consistent.

s. The aroma of this beer is the big seller to me. It is pitch perfect. Hoppy, pine, grapefruit, slight malt. Wow - impressive on the nose.

t. Malt steals the show for me. There is some pine and there is some hops, but the amount of malt seems to be out of balance for an IPA.

m. Very good. Light carbonation but solid.

o. My scores average out to a 4 - not sure but I will go there. If you are an IPA purist - heavy on the hops taste - you may not like this as much as others. It is an outstanding beer overall. (697 characters)

A: Very clear amber/orange topaz colored with a nice looking cakey slightly orange tinted head.

S: Aroma is lightly sweet with butterscotch and toasty bread malt, and a classic mix of hop aromas like centennial, cascade, amarillo, and others with peachy-melon and tropical fruitness. Crisp, clean, and well balanced.

T: Flavors are very likable. Nice simple, rich malt flavors of toffee, butterscotch, fresh bready grains, and fruity, spicy, brisk and piney hops all over. The fruitiness increases as it warms with a nice dry, lengthy, hoppy bitter finish.

M: Right on... Slick, creamy, fine, fully dispersed carbonation bubbles in all encompassing goodness. Dry and lip smacky.

O: A very nice IPA. You can tell this recipe has been honed. Balanced, hoppy, and fun. Classic west coast style... (797 characters)

Great complexity of flavors for an IPA, with lots of citrus and fruit notes accompanied by hop-appropriate herbal and spice notes. The aroma is fantastic and fresh even out of this older bottle. This beer is definitely one that lives up to the hype. It's a bit harder to find and a bit more expensive than I would like but I think it rests in the top 5% of the crowded IPA landscape and thus the elite pricing is deserved. (422 characters)

Absolute perfect example of an America IPA. Beautiful aromatics and flavors of tropical fruit followed by bright citrus and piney bitterness. Great lacing in a pint glass. It finishes with a welcome bitterness that lingers pleasantly on the palate. This is the IPA that most IPA's want to be when they grow up. (310 characters)
