Bought a bomber of this from City Swiggers, even though there was an Elysian tasting going on.
This poured a shady straw color with a dense head. It oddly smelt like honeydew meets malt. It was't what h was expecting but it was extremely pleasing. The taste had citrus hop characteristics with a sweet caramel malt backbone. Kind of bitter on the aftertaste though. The carbonation tingles on your tongue.

A very classic example of a West Coast IPA with hops as the star.

Had this on Nitro Tap at City Beer in SF. This was my first ever IPA on Nitro. The Nitro made a great beer even better by smoothing out the hoppiness and providing the milky start that nitro lovers love. If you see it on Nitro tap, I highly recommend you pull the trigger.

Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with "IPA" in huge block letters, so as not to confuse this beer with any other style. There appears to be some yellow ink from where a date stamp used to be, but it is no longer legible. Poured into a 50 cL glass stein with a textured exterior.

Appearance - Pours a light orange, tangerine-colored body with a slight element of haze, likely from the aggressive pour. Atop the body sits a lush two-finger head dirty white head with a smattering of larger bubbles that begin to burst, leaving pockmarks. Retention is moderate, and as it fades, it leaves sheets of sticky lacing that show residue long after most of the lacing fades.

Smell - Wonderfully fruity and hop-licious, with elements of fresh greens and faint pine resin bringing a balance to the citrusy goodness. Still very clean and crisp, in spite of carrying all those wonderful aroma profiles.

Taste - Delivers on the fruity promise of the aroma. Orange, grapefruit and some pineapple, with a nice bitterness and contrast from the malty foundation. Some mild alcoholic esters as well as brighter herbal grassy elements.

Mouthfeel - Juicy and refreshing, with moderate carbonation and a body that is just barely on the light side of medium.

Overall, a stellar and balanced example of the style. The near-imperial level of alcohol doesn't even really make itself known with the rest of the bright and enticing flavor profiles leading the show. I could see this being a good hot summer day IPA, in spite of the strength. I'm looking forward to trying more from AleSmith.

Bottle date: 5/30.

Poured in a pint glass the color is light copper- a lighter color than most IPAs.

The aroma: malt, and light grapefruit rind. Perhaps a fresher bottle would yield
more fruit in the aroma.

Mouth feel: hoppy and pungent.

Taste: citrus rind and malty.

Finish- perhaps the most pronounced element of the beer- very hoppy, pungent bitterness,
and spice. A spice forward IPA.

Overall- a solid IPA. Not as "San Diego" style as Lagunitas and Port Brewing.
Pungent, yes. But this beer lacks the concentrated grapefruit of the latter breweries's IPAs.

Perhaps a fresher beer would bring out the overwhelming grapefruit taste of San Diego IPAs, and many American IPAs. I would like to try a fresher bottle for comparison. Less grapefruit is probably a result of the Alesmith brewing style and not freshness.
