On tap at Alesmith

A: Deep reddish brown with a creamy beige head. Really nice color.

S: Lots of caramel with lesser notes of bread. Esters remind me of apple and a perhaps plum. There's a suggestion of sulfur, and a little tea character.

T: Toasted biscuit melds with bread and a subtle herbal tea flavor. Caramel is evident, and there's a low earthy bitterness. A touch of mineral accompanies notes of apple.

M: Lower medium body with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth.

Overall: I'm not big on the style, but this is enjoyable and easy to drink. I prefer this to the regular Anvil ESB.

A: Dark ice tea pour summons a monstrous 3 finger mushroomy crown that had a light peanut shell tint. Lengthy retention atop with a strong, quick rise of carbonation bubbles along the vessel walls. Big wads of spongy foam deposits adhere heartily on the sides.

S: Sweet crystal malts, lightly dry, spicy cola, cinnamon sticks and some earthy dry tea.

T: Flavor was earthy tea and dry crystal malts. The sweetness from the grains are balanced by an earthy bitterness, cola, and dry cinnamon sticks. Fresh green hopping with a soft hint of pear fruitiness. Some dry nuttiness, sweet caramel and some breadiness.

M: Mouthful is dry, nutty and bready, powdery with a medium body. Tingly micro-bubbly sensation.

O: Overall not usually a big fan of style but his may be a game changer. Nice soft, dry crystal maltbase, spicy colal, easy drinking and very good per style.

Had on the 2007 BA Decadence release date. This version of Anvil ESB has English malt and yeast, and no dry hopping. I was told that they created the yeast strain for a "special beer" they didn't want to reveal yet. The 2008 Decadence (an English Barleywine) perhaps?

In any event, pours a brownish copper. Large foamy tan head. Smells like sweet toffee and a bit yeasty/bready. No hops in the smell.

No real hops in the flavor, either. Mostly a sweet toffee caramel and a bit of yeastiness to it to add zest. Lots of malt. Creamy.

On-tap at Alesmith, served in a 12 oz plastic cup.

A - pours a red-copper color with a modest white head

S - faint smell of hops

T - up front bitterness hits the palate, bready/yeasty with a nice malty backbone, finishes with caramel and a little sweetness

M - slightly creamy with a medium amount of carbonation, coats the mouth but finishes very clean

O - very good example of an American ESB (cask), I enjoyed the characteristics the different yeast imparted and overall liked it a touch better than their standard Anvil (cask)
