On tap at the brewery. Jet black, totally opaque beer with a decent cap of brown foam that quickly settles down and leaves extensive lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate, malty sweetness and a late hit of smoke and heat from the chilis.

I loved the flavor of this beer, which has strong coffee and chocolate notes as well as a fairly aggressive chili punch. The chipotles give a nice little smoky touch. Mildly sweet and low in hop bitterness with good roasted character. Heat lingers a bit in the finish.

Nicely chewy, creamy, and sticky. Carbonation on the low end combined with the full body makes this very smooth.

I haven’t had a ton of chili beers but this one is definitely my favorite. All the greatness of Speedway with a well-integrated chili flavor. Absolutely delicious.

On tap at Alesmith

A: Black with a thin dark brown head. Gorgeous.

S: Wet earth, roasted malt, dark fruit and some banana. I started to get some roasted chipotle as the beer warmed.

T: Chipotle, brown sugar, chocolate and some banana bread with a great creeping heat that lingers for a long time. Some milk chocolate on the finish. I loved this beer.

On tap at O'Briens Night of a Million Zillion Speedways

Look: Typical speedway. Black and totally opaque with a 1/8 inch tan head and good retention for a small pour

Smell: I was a bit let down by those because I wanted more from the chili's and they just weren't there. It smells like a speedway with just a touch of spice. Good but I wanted more

Taste: The beer has a surprising amount of heat based on the two peppers that were used. The morita pepper supplies a bit of a fruity note and the two peppers supply a nice amount of smoke that mixed in with the chocolate and coffee notes create the best flavor I have had on a Chili beer

Mouthfeel: Full body and low carbonation with just a hint more head than mild and a bit stingy feel on the roof of your mouth

Overall: Great chili beer and is hands down my favorite chili beer I have had to date and was definitely the surprise of the night

Dark as night black with brown edges, thin head but the body of this beer is just spectacular. It's thick and oily and leaves the glass absolutely covered in sticky lace. Thick as can be and dark as night. Spectacular.

The chipotle and morita peppers present in the aroma immediately; the base beer tries to add balance of some roast, mild coffee, and chocolate notes. The peppers have transformed this beer, adding significant chile heat throughout.

The initial sip isn't particularly spicy, lettings the coffee and rich roast elements dominate. Though after the swallow, a fairly strong heat component pushes its way through and lingers and lingers. It's quite the complement to the rich roast and chocolate notes in the base beer.

Rich and thick mouthfeel with ample carbonation.

The critic in me wants to suggest that the chile presence is overpowering--too much spice. Though, when I put this beer to my lips, I find it a lovely combination and remarkably drinkable. This was one of the highlights for me at the Million Zillion event. A joy. This reminds me quite a bit of Cigar City's Hunaphu, though the pepper and chile component is far greater and much stronger in this version. In my opinion, that's a good a thing.

A dark black body and no head. Same with all of them

S-little chili but hot much and its a struggle to get any

T-follows the nose. A little chipotle but not very much

M-medium body and smooth. So smooth

O-good variation but not one I would go back to...

The beer pours into my glass with a two finger thick, creamy, well browned, dark head that leaves some nice lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is almost pitch black with some brown tinges to it and a clear dark chocolate brown color if you hold up a thin part of it directly to the light and is exactly what you want this beer to look like. The beer smells of rich, concentrated malt with umami notes of light smoke, dark smoothly roasted grain, black espresso, an almost roasted nutty note and some sweet coffee notes. The finish has a touch of chile spiciness to it that disappears fairly quickly (as well as some spicy alcohol notes), but was quite distinct in the first few moments of pouring this beer. After leaving the beer for a moment the sharp roast notes, rich smokiness and spicy chile hints become noticeable again, but once again the smooth, sweeter, dark chocolate like notes and smooth coffee notes become the dominant character. After even some more time, the roast, sometimes sharp, roasted coffee notes start to become the dominant note in the aroma.

Smooth and sweet with chocolate notes as it first hits my tongue. The beer finishes with a sharply, slightly acrid big roast character, hop bitterness and a hint of chile spiciness that lightly lingers on the tongue; this last is actually quite faint, but grows to be a bit more piquant after subsequent sips. The up front dark chocolate notes are quite rich and oh-so smooth, the coffee notes are here (especially if you let the beer sit on the tongue) and it reminds me a bit of a thick, rich mocha. There is a hint of smokiness to the flavor, though it is not nearly as noticeable as it was in the nose. There is a roasted fruitiness to the finish that reminds me a bit of burnt prunes (my wife says it reminds her of an Asian plum or even hoisin sauce a bit in the finish). There seems to be a hint of something wrapped up in the chile spiciness that reminds me of a berry / vegetal chile flavor (as opposed to the heat). The body of this beer is rich and chewy, quite viscous and a definite sipping beer; the roasted & hop bitter, slightly acrid and piquant finish do a great job of ensuring this is not cloying and helps balance out the up front richness of the imperial stout.

I can't believe that there is a subtle smokiness to this brew; I don't think it is from the base beer, but is actually from the smoked chiles (chipotles) that were used in this beer. I like the subtle, palate warming effect of the chiles here, this really isn't a spicy brew but it has a nice, pervasive, almost invasive warming effect on my head (or perhaps that is the %). Really nice, I was quite surprised to find that I liked this a lot more than the Kopi Luwak version.

Huge thanks to Dakine for sharing this unexpected treat at the 2011 Hunahpu's release. I listed this as a growler because it was a flip top bottle filled directly from a tap at Alesmith.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a one finger dark mocha head with good retention, slowly fading into a thin ring. Sporadic spots and streaks of lacing left behind.

Complex aroma blending roasted malt, silky chocolate, roasted coffee and chili powder. Good balance of roasted and sweet with a nice chili pepper character that compliments the other notes without overpowering them.

Full bodied with a nice blast of peppery heat up front that lingers throughout but is perfectly balanced by the sweet silky chocolate malt, toffee, hazelnut and roasted coffee flavor. It's amazing to me how incredibly well balanced this beer is. The ABV is excellently masked with no alcohol heat or warmth(from the booze at least). There is plenty of chili/peppery heat but the luscious chocolate and roasted coffee notes are allowed plenty of room to shine through. This beer was amazing and I would love to try it again some day. (on draught at RBWG 2011-Phoenix!!). Pours dark brown with red hue and thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate, adobo sauce and coffee. Taste is semi-sweet with some roasty bitterness and some heat coming through. The heat is subtle and blends perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. Medium bodied with creamy texture. Finish is mildly spicy and roasty. This is a really nice speedway variation. Thanks to Dak and John for hooking this up!!

A: Looks like Speedway: thick and black with a finger or so of tan head.

S: Spicy chili peppers are strong up front with the coffee following quickly behind. Plenty of roasted malt and a touch of char, but not as much of the smooth chocolate qualities that regular Speedway tends to have.

T: Earthy and spicy chili peppers provide the bulk of the flavor here. The coffee is still there, but there is not as much of the base Speedway character as I would have liked. Some mild chocolate and a good roast, but not as rich.

M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: Good but not as good as regular Speedway Stout (or of course some of the other variations).

On tap at O'Brien's Night of a Million Zillion Speedways.

Bordering on black with a frothy light brown head, good retention, lots of lacing.

Aroma is quite spicy, with strong notes of Chipotle and Morita peppers that add an interesting twist to Speedway. Coffee is subtle here, adding a semblance of balance to the pepper. Chocolate and moderately roasted malt are present, but also are subdued compared to the peppers.

Flavor is spicy as hell. Reminds me of a spicier version of Hunahpu's with coffee notes. It actually tastes great. Peppers are dominant, but are complemented by chocolate and coffee. Chocolate is somewhere between dark and milk. The finish displays an increase in spicy pepper heat, leaving a trailing burn on the palate. Pretty damn tasty.

Mouthfeel is dry and creamy. Carbonation is good.

Overall I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It was spicier and more delicious than I expected.
