Yulesmith Summer (Alesmith, DIPA) Reviewed Sept 2011 A-
Source/Serving: 750 mL bottle
S: Rich and oily with nice depth. Piney apricot-blood orange honey. Oily citrus. Carmel malts find a way to peek through.
T: Nice subtlety and spot-on dryness for a DIPA. Citrus oils and nice caramel maltiness at first with pleasant, but formative, bitterness. Nice balance of flavors that are intense all around. Hop-derived fruitiness blazes out in the middle with apricots, lime, kiwi, pineapple and only a touch of pine. Only as heavy and oily as it needs to be, no more with carbonation that is soft and spot on. Faint breadiness peeks through. While its a wallop of flavor, its quite delicate with a honey-esque character. Finish is nice and dry but super smooth with a firm, pleasant bitterness that lingers nicely and is reminiscent of coffee. Again, nicely balanced for such an intense beer.
Notes: A standout DIPA that gets high marks for finesse and drinkability.

Serving Type - 22oz bottle
Appearance - Golden tan, mellow yellow with a killer 3 inch thick, foamy head. Tons of sticky lacing.
Smell - Nice upfront citric, piney, grapefruit hops. Orange, some lemon, mild malt backbone. Sweet added sugars, along with some spices like coriander, lemon peel.
Taste - Right on par with aroma, big amounts of citric fruits featuring pine, grapefruit and orange. A bitter kick with some minor spices add a little zest behind tangerine and mango. A nice sugary note along with a caramel malt backbone.
Mouthfeel - Sweet tropical fruits along with some sugars coat the tongue. Palate gets more citric fruits, along with the caramel backbone. Aftertaste is minor bitter, tropical fruity.
Overall - Awesome. This should be a regular release. Really flavorful, nice amounts of hops and sweet sugars to create a nice smooth drink. Alcohol is hidden well and just adds to making this really pleasurable to drink.
