Also known as YuleSmith (Summer)
Every year we anxiously await the warmer months to unleash this Double IPA, the summer edition of our former YuleSmith seasonals. The flavor imparts orange, grapefruit, and tangerine hop notes with earthy, spicy, and resinous pine undertones. A sturdy malt backbone balances out the profound hop bitterness to create a refreshingly assertive and vibrant beer that offers an unapologetically bold expression of fresh American hops.
YEAR ROUND: No – July / August

2009 Summer Edition, on tap at Father's Office in Santa Monica. Served in a non-branded, stemmed, shaped pint glass.
Rich amber to orange/butterscotch colored, nearly opaque body topped by a two finger pillowy seashell head of foam. Moderate retention, with sticky pertinacious rings of lacing. No legs noted despite the ABV.
Delicate hop aroma, mostly floral with elements of rosewater, orange blossom, and pine.
Orange-zest, mild tartness, pine (again), pepper, sourdough, and an ever-so-lightly-toasted malty sweetness on the palate. Semi-dry, almost woody finish, with a hint of yeast as the liquid begins to warm.
Mouthfeel is excellent: smooth, rich, medium-bodied with a supportive effervesence and a bit of heat from the (otherwise well disguised until you stand up suddenly on an empty stomach) alcohol.
Drinkability is high, but I was surprised that this "double" or "imperial" IPA seems more balanced and not nearly as hop-forward as the intensely hoppy regular Alesmith IPA I've had on tap elsewhere.
I've got a bottle of the 2008 Winter release bunkered - I plan to review that as well in comparison with a fresh bottle of the 2009 Winter release when the latter becomes available.

Shared bottle at local tasting, thanks to gunnar. ABV is 8.5%. Golden colour, huge white head. Sweetish aroma of malts and orange marmalade. Distinctly hoppy flavour throughout, very bitter finish. Maybe not very complex, but good.

Presentation: 12 oz. can, served in a Samuel Adams pint glass.
Appearance: One finger head that sticks around for a while and leaves some good lacing. Cloudy, dark gold color.
Smell: Dank, musky hop aroma, some fresh citrus peel with faint malt and grain notes in the background.
Taste: Bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. It has more of a juicy, fruity, sweet citrus character which is nice. A faint, piney aftertaste remains.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and medium bodied with medium high carbonation.
Overall: Nothing new or groundbreaking here, which is fine. A solid DIPA and a damn good beer.

There’s a simultaneous malt & fruity kick on each sip. The piney aftertaste is blatant and incredible. Yummy beer!
