Wee Heavy with Oak Chips Soaked in Bulleit Bourbon
On cask at AleSmith tasting room during 2012 CBC/WBC week. Got the last pull on the cask.
A: Pours a red-tinted dark brown, still managing good clarity, with an airy light khaki head. Very good retention and thick walls of lacing on the glass.
S: Dried red fruit (cherry, raisin), fruity esters, with faint sweetish bourbon notes. Aroma is good but pretty faint.
T: Similar, quite fruity but only a touch of sweetness and caramel and a little acidity. Sits on the palate for a long finish. Pretty clean taste.
M: Sticky, medium body and almost no carbonation. That's what cask'll do to you, I guess; a little carbonation would have elevated this beer quite a bit. Alcohol completely hidden.
O: Seems more like an old ale than a Wee. I don't get the big caramel notes. The bourbon is very faint, hard to notice unless you're on the lookout, but unsurprisingly I don't really detect anything from the oak.
