750mL bottle thanks to MrKennedy via nicks6217. Shared with MrKennedy and mulder1010. Reviewed from notes.
Jet black with a persistent saffron head.
Backbone of the aroma is equal parts coffee and bourbon jostling for prominence. As it opens up base beer notes gradually emerge; chocolate and tarry toast at first, before molasses and sweet dark fruits finally kick in. The overall result is impressively balanced and surprisingly orthodox.
Mellow woody bourbon notes integrating with candy floss high notes and a solid earthy grounding from the coffee. There's not much actual expression from the base stout, yet the robustness overall puts you in no doubt its there.
Full, velvety smooth.
It's a great beer but to plagiarise MrKennedy's views there's almost too much balance, with the three elements of barrel, coffee and base beer keeping one another in check rather than creating real excitement or something unexpected. In this regard I thought the non-BA Kopi Luwak Speedway was much more expressive.
