The best nut brown I've had since Samuel Smith. The apperance was great with a dark chocolate brown color and slightly off white head. The smell was great with a smell of nutella and malt. The flavor was very smoothe and refreshing with a great blend of nuttiness, malts and just a slight hint of hops in the finnish. A excelent brown and extremly drinkable!

Appearance: chestnut brown in color, 1/4 inch head, clear, high carbonation

Smell: deep toasted malt and nut

Taste: deep toasted malt, nut, light roasted malt, earth, and some chocolaty notes

Mouthfeel: light bodied, high carbonation, sweet start with an earthy backbone.

Overall: A very enjoyable sessionable nut brown. Not my favorite in the style, but it is up there. I will certainly pick this one up again. Makes for a great fall beer.

750mL bottle from Premier Gourmet, purchased alongside a good number of AleSmith offerings.

Poured into a sampler glass, shared at a recent tasting. Dark chestnut brown, and with a brilliant half inch of light brown head that takes a good while to recede. Great retention, and loads of sticky lace. Great stuff.

Nose is classic quality brown ale, lightly roasted malt, caramel, toffee, nuts (chestnut or hazel), apple, figs and a light hop bitterness.

Very impressive brown ale. Normally this is a style that I really enjoy, but rarely have much to say about, nor is it a style I actively seek out in my beer hunting - it's a sturdy, everyday drinking ale. This edition, however, is one of the best around and deserves special mention. Rich, very flavorful with a clear nuttiness and sweet caramel flavour, which is cleaned up with a nice dry roasted bitterness. Smooth, highly sessionable were I able to have this on tap.

Great stuff, this. So glad I picked this one up, especially at the price (4 or 5.99 I think). Very tasty brown ale - well worth seeking out.

Tap @ O'Brien's. Pours clear brown with a short-lived off-white head. Aroma of nuts and caramel. More nuts in the taste; almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts. Nice blend of caramel and cocoa and a slightly smoky finish. I'm still not a huge fan of brown ale, but this was very good.

Rich dark brown in color with great clarity. A thin layer of white foam rests on top. Brussels lacing. Luscious nutty aroma along the lines of hazelnut and caramel greets me. Delicious hazelnut dominates the dark malt flavor. The mouth is smooth and silky.

On Tap

Vine Cottage
San Marcos, CA

A very dark brown with a small brown head that eventually leaves messy sheets of lace down the glass.

Pleasant, to-style aroma of distinct nutty elements, mild roast, biscuit, and mild toffee.

The flavor is similar, though more complex than the aroma. Along with the nutty, bready, and sweet elements, there's also distinct coffee flavor.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A terrific brown.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tall Summit glass. Bottled on 08/06/13.

Appearance: Pours a deep brown amber cola like color with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of light tan head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A toasty and fairly sweet malt forward aroma with good hints of chocolate and nuts. Upfront toasted and roasted malts with hints of sweet chocolate, caramel, toffee, biscuit, nuts, coffee, toast, grains, and yeast. Hints of brown sugar sweetness. Subtle hints of earthy and grassy hops linger around in the background. Slight hint of citrus orange as well. A pretty solid brown aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely toasty and sweet malt driven taste with good notes of chocolate, biscuit, and nuts. Toasty and roasted taste of malts upfront with notes of chocolate, caramel, toffee, biscuit, nuts, toast, coffee, cream, grains, and yeast. Sweet notes of brown sugar linger. Decent hop background with earthy and grassy notes and a slight presence of citrus orange peeks through. A very solid malty and nutty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth. Somewhat sweet but finishes fairly dry.

Overall: A very solid take on a Brown Ale. Good toasty malt presence with good notes of chocolate, biscuit, and nuts.

Chestnut colored with an oatmeal colored head that rises up minimally and settles out quickly. Surprisingly clear. Low aroma of cocoa and dark malt, a little toasted.

Flavors of dark malt, cocoa, notes of molasses and licorice, slight metallic note. A raisin note lingers. Thin mouthfeel, a bit slick. Decent beer, but I expected more from this world class brewer.

22 oz bottle, 2014 vintage, served in a wine glass.

Pours with a very durable tan head that leaves excetional lacing. The body is very dark red-brown, clear but almost opaque.

Aroma: the weak point. Nutty malts with some faint off odors.

Flavor: Moderate strength nutty flavor with dark grains and a impression of dark bread. Good, lingering malty aftertaste.

O: a decent nut brown but the weakest offering I've had from this fine brewery.

I had this beer on tap at the Liar's Club. I have never seen it anywhere else, so I am happy that it is always at the Liar's Club.

This beer pours a redish brown color with a nice looking ruby tint. It has a light tan head, that fades slowly, leaving many thick laces.

This beer has a nice toasted malt aroma. It smells nutty. It also has a good caramel sweet aroma to it. Not much hop presence.

This beer tastes much like the aroma leads on. It is pleasently nutty, with a mild toasted malt flavor. Caramel sweetness in present. As with the aroma, the hop profile is rather low.

This beer is quite refreshing. It goes down very smooth, leaving a nutty aftertaste. This beer is perfectly carbonated.

I think this beer would make a perfect session beer if you could find it. It is low in alcohol, and that can be nice. Also, it has a great flavor, and wouldnt get overbearing.

Overall: I really like this beer. It is easy to drink with the low alcohol. I wish it was more available. It is a winner.

Had on-tap at the Yard House in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a bright brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of toasted malts with sweet caramel aromas and a hint of citrus hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Toasted and caramel malt flavors kick things off and carry through until a crisp and slightly bitter ending. As with the smell there's a small amount of citrus hops that makes an appearance but the malts are front and center throughout.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a solid thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have a few more of these, especially at 4.8%.

Overall this is one of the better brown ales I recall having. A solid brown that doesn't try and overpower the subtle flavors. Certainly worth a shot.

Poured an excellent dark brown with off white head that looks ruby red when held up to a light. The scent was excellent, rich roasted malt, toffee, nutty notes and a bit of dark coffee were all present on the nose. Very enticing. The flavor delivered on this promise, beginning with a hit of roast malt, moving into toffee and roast malt, and finishing with rich nutty notes and a slight coffee like aftertaste. The mouthfeel was good, with a medium carbonation that made the beer quite easy to drink. The body was medium-light which contributed to this ease. An all around excellent brown ale, easily the best I've tried as of this date.
