22 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, deep, dark, mahogany color with two full fingers of oatmeal-colored head that dissolved into a lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Lots of roasted malt and dark bread, with some brown sugar and toffee.

Taste: Roasty, malty, nutty, delicious! Lots of roasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly baked dark bread like pumpernickel, followed by some brown sugar-like sweetness, and finished with some nicely balanced hops. Absolutely delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy. Some good carbonation to slightly tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 5.0%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is one of the best American made versions of an English Nut Brown Ale that I’ve ever had! It’s absolutely delicious!! Fans of brown ales should definitely give it a try. I’m certainly going to get some more of this!!

Chestnut colored with an oatmeal colored head that rises up minimally and settles out quickly. Surprisingly clear. Low aroma of cocoa and dark malt, a little toasted.

Flavors of dark malt, cocoa, notes of molasses and licorice, slight metallic note. A raisin note lingers. Thin mouthfeel, a bit slick. Decent beer, but I expected more from this world class brewer.

650ml bottle poured into an AleSmith snifter.

The beer pours a nice deep brown color, almost black, hues of burgundy and garnet when struck by the light, opaque texture with a thick, taut, khaki head that has decent retention and leaves a few spots of lace behind. The aroma is nice, rich sweet malts, dark brown bread, light bitterness, mild hazelnut that brings out some sweetness to pair with the malts. It's simple, but balanced and well executed. The flavors mirror well, nutty dark grains, sweet malts, a touch of cocoa and brown sugar with only the lightest bitterness, very well balanced, although they seem to feel a bit muted at the end. The mouthfeel is nice, coats the tongue well, carbonation is moderate, has a bit of chewiness at times but finishes a little meekly.

Verdict: A nice example of the English Brown Ale from AleSmith, it's simple but balanced and very sessionable at just 5% ABV. I don't often crave this style, but for those nice crisp fall days, this will definitely do the trick.
