On tap at the brewpub on 7/24/12

My intention was to review only the Big Red IPA but after my wife pointed out that the Raspberry Blonde Ale was made by dumping raspberry syrup into a pint glass and then pouring the regular Blonde Ale into the glass. I decided right there to tick-up the tasting flight by allowing only one line from my steno pad to each beer.

Irresponsibly-deserved Tick #6

A) Very light amber. Not much of a head. No retention or lace.

S) Grass, orange peel, light fruit, biscuits and grain.

T) Grainy and tangy with a modest hop kick. Some aspirin, too.

M) Light body with overly fizzy carbonation.

On tap at the Ram.

(A)- Pours a clear amber color. Some white froth.

(S)- A nice piney caramel profile. Some "green" around the edges in regards to the hop profile.

(T)- Similar to the smell. Primarily piney with a caramel malt backbone. Still, a little "green" in a cut grass type of a way.

(M)- A good carbonation level. Just a bit too grassy for my taste in the hop profile. It does not necessarily make it more bitter, but it isnt helping it either.

(D)- Overall, decent, it just does not seem to have a very fresh hop character to it. Maybe sitting a tad too long in the keg?

On tap at the Wheeling location.

A: On tap at the Wheeling location. Served a copper color with a nice head and good lacing.

S: Fresh aroma of caramel, citrus and some fruitiness.

T: Taste starts with nice citrus nip, with a mixture of caramel and fruitiness. There is a nice bitterness and a clean finish.

F: Medium body, crisp, smooth and refreshing. Very well balanced.

O: Enjoyable beer that goes down very easy. Well crafted Pale Ale.

Served in a shaker pint glass at the brewpub.

'71 was a pretty good year, I guess. The namesake beer pours a very lightly hazed straw topped by a half-finger of white micro-foam. The nose comprises flowers and some light caramel. The taste holds notes of caramel, flowers, chalk, and a very slight pine flavor. The body is a medium light, with a very light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, an okay pale ale at best, not something I'd either recommend or warn against.

Served at the Kent Station Ram Restaurant. If you are looking to try Ram Beers, sit at the bar! Service in the dining room is a bit lame.

This was delivered at the table, and the head had already gone away.

The hoppy nose screamed hello. The first sip was of smooth malt and hops. A bit heavy and semi-sweet. Classic toasted nut ale finish.
Definitely trying again at the next Ram visit.

71 is named in honor of the year Ram started up.
What stands out to me is the mix of tastes, but not one is bolder than the other. It is truly one I would recommend to the lover of many different styles.

The Appearance is an amber-golden color, and not as red as you might expect. Served in an 18-oz pint, the head remains for a little while but, it has never lasted too long for me because I am digging in already. Nice lacing on the glass no matter what the temperature.
When Smelling I can detect the malt but there is a spice present, is it clove?
But in the Taste I get no spice at all, just the malt and slight caramel sweetness, then as it travels over my tongue I detect the bitterness, but it dissipates quickly leaving very little dryness that I associate with an APA. I have felt this aftertaste and a satisfaction with so few other beers.
71 is not too heavy and is quite satisfying and drinkable over some time.
When talking to the bar mistress I have learned that so many customers buy other drinks that they have offered large discounts on their beer. While this baffles me I don't argue how it benefits me. Half price growlers on weekends and $3 18oz pints all the time? I'm there anyway, but I am enjoying more at home too.

On tap at the RAM, usually leave quite happy with their beers.

Pours a clear copper, amber highlights, thick white head, lots of lace, great retention, textbook APA. Smell is great, caramel/honey sweetness, bit citrus and floral hops, nice fruitiness, smells very balanced. Taste is fruity, tons of floral and citrus hops, nice caramel and biscuit middle, nice floral in the finish, very aggressive but clean bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation, very coating, hopping is very well done. Great APA!

On tap at the Ram.

Bartender offered this up when I ordered another Big Red. She said it was a new beer, fairly hoppy, and that people who liked Big Red should give it a try. Why not...

Clear light gold in appearance. Medium sized, off white head.

Aroma again mild, again probably a function of temperature. Picked up mainly citrus.

Taste was of a hoppy pale ale, so good call on the part of the bartender. Citrus dominated, some pine and grass as well. Malt character could be described as crackery. More bitter than sweet overall.

Light to medium in body. Medium carbonation. Fairly dry.

To me, a very nice session beer. Decent hop flavor, and a fairly light body. I will seek this out next time I go to the Ram.
