Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Dubbel boasts a deep red color and a complex malty taste. The finish is dry with subtle hints of chocolate and nuts. The yeast asserts itself by lending a classic Belgian fruitiness.

Allagash Dubbel Reserve
Allagash Brewing Company

Appearance:
This beer is a thick, murky, brown with very faint suggestions of orange when held to the light. A healthy, thick, tan head forms with great retention and no lacing.

Smell:
Not a very strong smell, rather elusive. I can smell bread from the yeast and a sweet malt caramel odor.

Taste:
A flavor of roasted malt is surprisingly consistent throughout the drinking experience. Sweet and toasty flavors hit the palette first, then a very smooth transition to an almost untraceable alcohol flavor which leads to a wet finish of bitter coffee and roasted nuts. The finishing flavor lingers in the aftertaste with the slight addition of alcohol flavor. This unique flavor has characteristics of both Belgian ales and nut brown ales, delicious.

Mouthfeel:
This brew has a very still medium to heavy body with very little carbonation.

Drinkability:
7% ABV is on the lower end of the spectrum for a dubbel, but it makes this beer much more drinkable. The subdued alcohol flavor also makes it drinkable. The balance between yeast and malt makes it drinkable. The only thing slowing this beer down is the hefty thickness of its body.

12oz. bottle poured into a stemmed tulip.

(A)- Pours a clear cranberry red color with some mahogany shades. Minimal off-white froth but with good retention.

(S)- Lots of biscuit-like yeast. Plenty of bubblegum meets some dark fruits and banana at the end.

(T)- Very similar to the smell with a dry biscuity yeast meets some dark fruits, banana, and subtle bubblegum.

(M)- A good carbonation level. A slight grainy feel the the beer texture-wise, but tastes great and minimal bitterness.

(O)- Not many american brewers makes a great dubbel, but this one is one of the best I have had from the states.
