Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Dubbel boasts a deep red color and a complex malty taste. The finish is dry with subtle hints of chocolate and nuts. The yeast asserts itself by lending a classic Belgian fruitiness.

Allagash in Texas. What will they think of next? Anyway, I grabbed me a bomber of the dubbel since I’d been reading Benny post about this stuff for MONTHS now. Figured it must be pretty good.

The beer poured an appetizing, translucent ruby with a big beige head. Ahh, bottle conditioning is to head retention what dry hopping is to aroma…. The nose on this beer was vinous, dusty, fruity and very spicy—like potpourri with cinnamon. The fluffy body had a raisiny, rum cake flavor, but in a “light” kinda way. If you can imagine a rum-cake-flavored angel food cake, then you’ll begin to follow me… The fairly quick finish features more of the dried spices, followed by an even drier, lingering dried fruit flavor (3 “dried”’s in one sentence? Weak…)

Complex, but not as complex as most of the Belgian dubbels I’ve had, nor as some of the other American dubbels I’ve had. There is however, a delicate finesse which suggests some real skill in the brewhouse. This is a well-made beer, if not quite as flavorful as some other interpretations of the style.

12oz. bottle poured into a stemmed tulip.

(A)- Pours a clear cranberry red color with some mahogany shades. Minimal off-white froth but with good retention.

(S)- Lots of biscuit-like yeast. Plenty of bubblegum meets some dark fruits and banana at the end.

(T)- Very similar to the smell with a dry biscuity yeast meets some dark fruits, banana, and subtle bubblegum.

(M)- A good carbonation level. A slight grainy feel the the beer texture-wise, but tastes great and minimal bitterness.

(O)- Not many american brewers makes a great dubbel, but this one is one of the best I have had from the states.

a. Nice brown color, cloudy, with 1.5 finger tan head. Disappears quickly into a trace skimming the top.

s. Spicier than expected - malt coriander, cinnamon

t. Coriander from the spice or the yeast, alcohol on the finish

m. For a 7% ABV it does not hide the alcohol well. Dry, alcohol finish hurts mouthfeel.

o. OK Beer - Coriander kills it for me, but if you like coriander, give this a try.
