Allagash...at last we meet!!! I've heard so much but experienced so little from this raved about Maine brewery. Purchased the Dubbel Reserve, Tripel Reserve, and a 6 pack of Grand Cru from a store in VA.
Batch # 32, 750 ml bottle.
Deep brownish-garnet in color, and quite clear. Initial huge, pillowy off-white head that persists for a while. Smells doughy, fruity, with some nutty qualities. Hints of the yeast are captured in the aroma too. The taste is well blended and balanced. Malt and Belgian yeast are apparent. Fruit and yeast notes thoughout, but somewhat subdued. Some alcohol warming (not overpowering). And, I really hate to compare beer characteristics to wine, but this ale resembles a red wine some respects. Finishes rather dry.
This is a quality beer in Belgian style. Allagash has, thus far, lived up to all I anticipated. I can't wait to try the tripel.
