Had this on tap at Beer Authority last week before the NCAA's at the Garden. I wanted something that wasn't too strong and would be suitable for the slowly-warming weather that we're experiencing this time of the year. This fit the bill perfectly as it was good for sipping slowly without being too strong or spicy. It wasn't weak either, as the peppery notes kept this full without reminding me of a pure Farmhouse or even a Pumpkin Ale.
The appearance to this was what I expected it to be, as this had a opaque, golden hue to go along with the solid head and lacing that left gorgeous rings after my first few sips. They weren't as noticeable further down but those first two or three stood present from start to finish, as they dried and left their mark along the top of my pint glass. Lots of pepper in the nose, to go along with the clove and hint of citrus that rounded out the aroma, but in the taste, all of that was reinforced by a good helping of candied sugar.
Although not a session beer technically, the alcohol was low enough and not very noticeable that I could have had another in my sitting, had I not been in a place with tons of good offerings on tap. This was great at having the sugar and spice of a Belgian beer with a fair amount of American hops, making it a hybrid of sorts. Tasty and unoffensive, this was something that I enjoyed and would love to see brewed more, since it was unique enough to stand out amongst the Hefe's and Belgian Whites that are so popular this time of the year.
