Notes/Commercial Description:
Tiarna is a blend of two beers, one aged in oak and fermented with 100% brettanomyces and the other fermented in stainless with a blend of two belgian yeast strains. Both beers were brewed with a combination of 2 row and wheat malt in addition to specialty grains. It was hopped with Hallertau, Styrian Goldings and Cascade hops. The finished beer is dark golden in color with citrus, pineapple and bread in the aroma. The flavor of this tart beer has notes of grapefruit, lemon, and bread crust, and a long, dry finish.

Massively carbonated: the cork flew out with just the barest nudge from my thumb. It took several pours and a couple minutes to fit the bottle into a glass; head is excessive, beautiful snow-white, and frothy. Head dies unevenly, leaving clumps of lacing all around.

Brew is a cloudy and bubbly golden straw, a little bit darker than a Belgian pale, and thickly translucent. Head lasts quite a while.

The aroma is Saison-like: bright lemon, light barnyard funk, wheat, grass, and sweet yeast, giving a hint of bananas, candi sugar, and light walnuts. There's a musty, almost dusty scent lingering in the background.

Flavors hit immediately, with a sharp funkiness, followed immediately by bright lemons and wheat, and then a darker, mustier funk follows. Nothing is overpowering, enabling superb balance and really delicate flavors to dance about, including candi sugar, banana notes, vanilla, and the aforementioned lemons, wheat, hay, and funk. A bit of vinegary sourness takes away ever so slightly from what is otherwise a fantastic tasting beer.

Feels light and lively in the mouth, but actually comes across as a medium-full body; possibly related to having the beer at cellar, vice refrigerator, temperature. No sting worth mentioning; flavors linger long after, with an emphasis on a sweet aftertaste.

This is a really tasty beer. It is listed as a wild ale, but it strikes me more as a Brett Saison. Similarly, Belgian Pale Ale would be decently appropriate, and if you look at it as such, Allagash hit a home run: the slight funkiness and back-end sourness give it a complexity that most Belgian pales don't approach.

If you like Saisons, Belgian Pales, and Brett beers, definitely give this a try. It makes a good special occasion beer; it's just slightly too thick, sweet, and funky for me to want one every day.

Enjoyed fresh; I can imagine the Brett would be more significant with age.

375ml cork & caged bottle poured into a tulip.

A- Cork flew off as soon as undoing the cage. Pours a very translucent golden color with a very high carbonation level of fast rising bubbles, a very foamy 2-finger white head forms that has great retention and doesn't recede.

S- Definitely on the bretty side with a golden ale base and a hay funk presence. Aromas of brettanomyces, hay, light grain, hint of lemon, oak, and a bit of a floral aspect. Fairly complex and aromatic.

T- Sour lemons, brett influenced barnyard funk with a bit of hay, slight grain, finishes with a bit of a sweetness of dry lemons and grain, ending with a lightly syrupy golden ale presence. Nice balanced funk, not overly sour, some decent complexity.

M- Fairly over-carbonated, long lasting head give a light foamy aspect, finishes fairly dry, pretty drinkable.

O- Tiarna is a pretty solid wild ale that was fairly accessible. My only complaint was the over-carbonation which is easily solved by letting it sit 5-10 minutes. Just watch out when opening the cork. If you see this on the shelf it's definitely worth picking up.

375ml C&C, bottled October 2013, poured into a Cantillon taster 7/7/2014.

A- Bright, clean and clear straw yellow body with a nice bubbly two-finger white head with excellent retention. It looks very refreshing and a nice change-up for the night.

S- Citrus zest, pineapple, pale malt, a bit of leathery funk. It's certainly a different nose than most other Brett beers I've had.

F- Pineapple, pale malt, Belgian candi sugar, lemon zest. This is quite interesting as this is clearly a Brett beer but there is more to be found, which makes sense given the blending of different threads.

M- A bit on the thinner side but well carbonated and drinks clean and very dry. The end is a bit more bitter than I'd like, presumably from the noble hopping, accompanied by a crisp, spicy Belgian yeast finish.

O- Interesting, different given the blending of different threads but certainly not in the conversation for the better Brett beers out there.

375ml corked and caged bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 1.5 finger foamy white head with excellent stick. Beer is a pale, clear goldenrod. Lacing is thick and layered with excellent stick. Near perfect!

Nose is starfruit, oak, Brett, lemon zest and a bit of sweetness. Rather subtle but very well integrated.

Opens lemon zest, Brett, wood, coriander and yeast. More lemon zest tartness mixed with rotting wood and barnyard notes in the middle. Hay, Brett and lemon rind at the end. Finishes yeasty and tart with a very mellow, lightly tart aftertaste. Tasty!

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and aggressive in the mouth and crisp and clean going down. Slightly filmy finish with a clean aftertaste that barely registers. Really drinkable!

Just a really well made beer, Tiarna doesn't blow away the taste buds but impresses with its subtlety and continuity. Worth trying and certainly representative of the Allagash Wilds lineup.

Thanks to newbrewbb for the opportunity to try this one. Pours a sunny, orange-gold with a loose, bright white head. Nose reveals citrus, brett and some oak notes. Taste consistent with nose - not overly sour but pleasantly tart with a slightly medicinal quality towards the back. Mouthfeel is light and lively with a bright carbonation. Overall, a solid entry-level wild - not overly complex; however, still quite tasty.
