Notes/Commercial Description:
Black in color with a creamy biege head, Red Howes is a stout brewed with 2-Row barley, a blend of roasted malts and 3,000lbs of local cranberries, both Red Howes and Early Black varieties. The finished beer has cocoa, coffee and berries in the aroma and flavors of dried fruit and bitter chocolate with a slight tartness and a dry, lingering finish.

Had at blind tiger in an 8 oz tulip- very dark, nice finger and a half of mocha colored head, modest retention and lacing.

Smell is nice and intriguing- roasted malts, vaguely smoky and a hint of cranberry.

Tastes great- rich roasted malt profile, certainly has some bitterness to it, and a very nice light cranberry flavor. Not intrusive but it's definitely there. Lovely.

Mouthfeel is pretty good- medium full bodied and decent carbonation. A little bit cloying but it is a stout. Really tastes great but leaves something to be desired in other aspects.

On tap into 10oz snifter at beer run in cville. Eyes are like looking into deep space with a light collar on the head with a few sirrus cloud micro bubbles inside. Nose is malts, subtle coco and coffee characterized by smoked peat. Taste is malt, subtle coffee/dark chocolate up front with a bit of a smoked feature as present in the nose, which as others have mentioned, decays to an interesting berry tartness. Overall, interesting take on the unique fruit stout, and I would recommend to people interested in stouts as i am. Otherwise, prob aren't missing too much passing this one up.

On-tap 7/6/2014 at Battleship Brewhouse in Fall River, MA served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a short light brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, some coffee, some chocolate, dark fruits are there but did not specifically detect cranberry.

T: The taste starts out with a hearty but not too heavy malt character followed by mild flavors of coffee and chocolate. There is a cranberry flavor that replaces the typical notes of dark fruit that you would normally find in a stout. The cranberry flavor also is not overdone, which is a good thing. The hops presence is very mild and creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, it’s a decent beer to drink for a while if you like the cranberry flavor and the dryness in stouts.

Near black color. No head except for the rim bubbles which leave only a couple of spots on the glass.

Dry unsweetened powdered cocoa is the primary smell. A touch of mocha in the background.

This seems like a straight up dry stout. There's a bit of fruity sweetness but it is so subtle I almost missed it. Highly carbonated for the style. Thin bodied.
