Smell reminiscent of floral shampoo mixed with liquor.

Ike a belgian strong dark ale with lots of green apple and caramel. I would have given higher ratings for style if it was not a quad.

Been meaning to try this for close to 4 years now (no pun intended). This is a really spectacular beer. Dark fruits abound. A great yeasty quality that doesn't appear often in american versions of the style. Beautiful.

Tasting glass on tap at the brewery.

Appearance: Pours a hazy ruby brown with a big cream-colored head. Lots of lacing.

Aroma: Smells of apricot, some grapefruit, a little caramel, and booze.

Taste: Lots of complex flavors competing here. Apricot and grapefruit, as in the nose, and also some biscuit. Slightly buttery. Definitely booze burn.

Mouthfeel: Pretty easy drinker despite the high ABV. Medium bodied.

Overall: Very tasty quad. Worth seeking out. Allagash is so good at these Belgian styles.

Perfect brew to open up for Juno. 750ml corked and caged bottle served in my Allagash chalice. 2014 vintage. Pours somewhere between cider and mahogany in color with a slight haze to the clarity and a rocky, two inch, cream-colored head embedded with tiny pinpricks. Nose is somewhat subdued - figs and yeast. Taste consistent with nose; however, there's also a faint medicinal quality and a trace of something metallic towards the back. Mouthfeel is medium-light with an easy, even carbonation. Overall, a decent Quad but the pricepoint ($18.49) and overall character isn't on par with the exemplars of the style (e.g. St. Bernardus 12, Rochefort 10, etc.).

Look: A ghost of a haze clouds this light Amber beer. The color is pretty, reminiscent of both caramel and honey. The white head, meanwhile, immediately becomes nothing more than a thin ring around the glass.

Smell: A refreshing whiff of sweet apricot and tangy grapefruit brigs a cooling sensation to the nose. Balancing out this fruity punch is a delicate malt mixture featuring the scents of doughy biscuits and multigrain crackers. A bit of honeysuckle hangs in the balance. Quite nice, but a little light. More complex bouquets exist when it comes to this style.

Taste: Apricot, orange, and a spritz of grapefruit are pumped up with peppery spices and settled down with what tastes like noble hops. Some nice malt complexity mixes with a light booziness in the finish: it's like a breath of top shelf whiskey and French bread dipped in olive oil.

Mouthfeel: A brilliant mouthfeel for the style. Silky but not slippery, dry, but not crispy. The carbonation jazzes things up, but wanes out in such a way that one can enjoy the flavors in the finish without any prickly distractions. The alcohol warming at the back of the throat is present, yet light.

Overall: Well-balanced, yet complex, refreshing, yet rich. Practically perfect, and yet there is just a tad bit lacking. This beer is light and bright for a quad, and would benefit from a bit more heft.

Spicy, yeasty, fruity nose, large pitted fruits with a hint of pineapple
Hazy orange tinted dark amber under a moussey, very fine bubbled 2" off white head that slowly descends to a thick film that produces thick lace.
Layers of big malt flavors including touches of caramel, maple, malty spice, biscuit to fruit bread, give way to yeast driven large pitted fruits, hints of tropical fruits to finish with hop spice and balancing bitterness. The malt, yeast, hop and alcohol flavors are very well balanced.
Medium body with creamy, very fine carbonation and a slight alcohol warming.

Had on-tap at Thirsty Monk Asheville. Served in a small goblet.

A- Pours a light brown color with a 1/8 inch off-white head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a bubbly side patch of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a thick solid ring behind.

S- It could be the incorporation of the four different yeast strains but this smells like it might be tart/sour. Slight booze fume.

T- Nevermind. No sourness, just some awesomely smooth Belgian candi sugar plus some vanilla and caramel notes. Incredibly drinkable for the ABV. Butter, burnt sugar, not very bitter. Also a bit of dark fruit.

M- Slightly zesty. Medium-low carbonation and a fullish body.

O- Haven't had this in so long and it's really a crime that I don't purchase it more often.

Edit: No, it was not intentional that I gave this beer a score of 4.4 but yes, it is awesome.

Poured from a 750 ml brown bottle into an oversized wineglass. Batch 22 on side of label. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Murky hazy amber with with thin cap of off-white head with numerous streamers and spots of lacing.

S: Very grapey, vinous aroma with plenty of caramel and dark fruit maltiness with raisin, plum, and cherry, and a good dose of herbal and floral citrus hop notes. There is some spicy yeast esters and a hint of higher alcohols.

T: The flavors are widespread but too fat of a distribution, complex but not that cohesive which I think is this beer's main fault. The grape in the aroma is still the most prominent feature with dashes of medium and dark crystal maltiness and dark fruits like cherry and fig with a hint of sourness. The hops are subtle but are moderately bitter with some herbal, earthy, and floral characteristics. The yeast notes are lightly estery but spicy which mixes well with the spicy alcohol bite. If I didn't know better, I would have thought this was wine barrel aged. The sweetness of the caramel malts are a bit too much along with the strong grape and dark fruitiness for me.

M: Smooth with a light alcohol burn, low carbonation as you'd expect, medium body.

O: Allagash Four is a very complex beer, but overly so, and the shotgun approach to flavors hurt the overall package as the flavors are all over the place.

Bottle is just about six months old, picked up at the brewery in September 2013.

A- Poured to the large Allagash chalice with a slightly hazed deep amber light brown body. A foamy cap forms on the beer to about three fingers high, appears thick. Head retention is good and never quite dies out, remains as a thick pillow. Thick lace deposits at the top of the glass with a continuation to what is some of the most impressive lace I have seen, a true blanket.

S- Malt and yeast complexity in a strong aroma but it lacks any alcohol like many other Quads can have at the same ABV, smooth and inviting. Yeast is predominant with notes of raisin, white pepper/Belgian yeast spice, figs, clove and light banana. Malts present some sweetness, medium candi sugar and toasted slightly nutty hints.

T- The balance and smoothness struck here is one of the best qualities of this beer. It doesn't destroy the palate with spicy, fruity flavors yet they are still strong enough to satisfy the style. Yeasty notes of dried dark fruits, figs, plums, orange zest, banana, clove, spices and herbs. Malts provide a nice base for this with caramel, brown sugar, medium candi sugar, toast and some nuttiness. Hops are certainly used here but meld in with the spicy yeast feel.

MF- Moderate to full bodied with a creamy and silky overall texture. Carbonation is at a high level and foamy but does not bite the palate at all, smooth. Finishes with just a touch of warmth.

Great interplay between four malts, four hops (albeit not as noticeable) and four yeasts. The complexity is high and the numerous flavors just seem balance out into a great final package. Way to drinkable for a 10% BSDA.

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-

APPEARANCE : Much paler than expected for a Quad and no haze at all. Crisp deep golden reddish-brown. Not much of a head to speak of, though what's there is pale brown/mocha. Considering the style, the visual can't be this beer strong point.

SMELL : First nose is brow sugar, malts, very faint. Second nose opens up the herbal/hop profile and expands on the malty side with some roasted sugar notes. Third nose doesn't go much further. Kind of disappointed with this brew's nose - not that it's bad, it's just so discreet, almost weak, and considering the style, that shouldn't be.

TASTE : Barley sugar, some burnt nuts and mocha. Very thin taste for a Quad. I've had pale Quads before - Gulden Draak 2000, for example - and they weren't so shy in nose and taste. It's very good, simply not at all what I expected given that Allagash advertise this as a Quad.

MOUTHFEEL : Not nearly as thick and rich as I'd wish a Quad to be. Still good, but as far as I'm concerned, definitely not on the style as I understand it. Carbonation is fine.

OVERALL : I'll up the score on this because it's frankly a very good beer - it's just not at all what a Quad should be in my books. I'd have another one of these anyday.

A - Poured slowly into a Chimay chalice. The beer is massively carbonated and forms a small head that persists forever. The beer is a gorgeous color. Overall it is a light brownish color, but along the bottom edges of the glass, where light penetrates more easily, there are distinct ruby hues. The beer is quite cloudy, and leaves light lacing on the walls of the glass.

S - Faint, but distinct. The aroma is as indicated in the notes. Dark fruit with a hint of Belgian yeast.

T - The flavors all combine quite well, with neither really taking the lead (although the yeast is closest). The sweetness and bitterness are both very mild, and the flavors are excellent

M - Initially a bit too carbonated, but as the beer warms and the carbonation subsides a bit this becomes a real treat. The carbonation softens and the finish is dry, but again, not overpowering.

O - This is a wonderful example of a full range of subtleties that combine to make an incredibly enjoyable beer. Highly recommend, especially for those who don't need to be smacked in the mouth in order to enjoy a beer.

A: Pours a cloudy dark ruby/mahogany color with 2 fingers of head that lasts for the better part of 5 minutes before resting at a thin cap

S: Yeasty esters, with some fruity and lightly spicy notes up front and darker fruits and alcohol in the back. Fig, raisin, plum all present

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the yeastiness and darker fruits followed by a mellow sweetness and a very light bitter bite. Alcohol warms but stays in the background flavor-wise. Finishes with a dry maltiness

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Dry

O: A nice American quad with quite a bit of complexity and depth. It makes for a nice sipper in the colder months. Definitely on the drier and less sweet side of the spectrum, but that only allows for more complexity. Would definitely benefit with some age, but it's also fine fresh. Give it a go

A crystal clear light copper liquid with a few tiny bubbles feeding a large three finger foam that hangs around for a few sips leaving just a patch of lace

S green apple, cherry, plum, dried banana chips, brown sugar covered raisins, faint cinnamon and booze, I get a little yeast as it warms

T some sweet malts, honey, and spice I can't quite place are added to the mix, still has a fair amount of fruit and a hint of booze with lots of brown sugar

M medium bodied, soft carbonation, a little heat, slightly sticky with spiced fruit lingering on the finish

O solid brew and a good example of the style, smell and taste are a highlight and it has some complexity working for it but has a little ways to go compared to the classics

I should have sat on this one for a while but that being said its still drinking well today, something I'd look for in the future and I could see it aging gracefully

This is a very good quad. It's lighter than my ideal quad, but still has a nice, complex flavor that invites you to sip slowly and think about what you're tasting.

Very good head and I admittedly sipped before smelling so I can't say much about the aroma, except that there was nothing off-putting about it. The color is an opaque red-brown. The bottle style and alcohol level suggests that this beer may be even better aged, though I drank it only a 5 months after the batch date printed on the label.

Definitely try it. :D

This pours out in a amber, copper brown color with a nice lacey head.

The aroma has tons of stuff happening. There’s cherry, caramel, a nuttiness, spice, tons of dried dark fruit, but then there’s a really nice pop of cherry or sour berry in the back. The aroma on this is killer.

The flavor follows with a huge pop of cherry, bready Belgian yeast qualities, but also darker fruits like figs, dates, and raisin. There’s also a candy caramel sweetness. The hops don’t really come through except for that good bitterness on the back. The cherry in there though really reminds me of Three Philsophers, probably from the yeast strain they’re using.

There is some booze on the end, but it is still easy drinking. There’s a tannin, vinous finish on the back end.

Dare I say, I perfer this over Three Philsophers. This surely packs more complexity and has that wonderful nose. It also is really quite easy drinking, which is dangerous for a 10% ABV quad. One of the few American examples of a quad that I both find interesting, but amazing.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer is a deep, vibrant, ruby-brown coloring with a short stacked, frothy, filmy, off-white head that settles into a sparse, filmy coating. Aromas of subtle spicing and a rich, bready backbone of old world fruit and toasted bread. Boozy highlights throughout the nose, also. This one smells rich and solid. Flavors are rich and roasted, with a nutty backbone supporting fig and black cherry sweetness. Tart and rich throughout, with a fruit sugar base that is enduring from start to finish. Spicing comes out as the beer warms. Pepper, basil, oregano, nutmeg, and clove, amongst other spices. You could sit all day and pick apart the intricacies of this one. Amazing. The body is smooth throughout, but avoids overpowering. The aftertaste is boozy, with highlights of roasted notes and old world fruit sweetness. Smooth, clean finish with only a hint of sweet linger. Just enough to entice you back for another sip. Solid, big, bold beer. Very tasty.

Bottle from 2007

A: Pours a murky mahogany in color with light amounts of visible carbonation and some orange + brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall soapy beige head that quickly reduces to an extremely thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark fruits, spices, and Belgian yeast. Lighter aromas of toffee malt sweetness.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of toffee malt sweetness which lasts throughout the taste of the beer. That is combined with moderate to strong flavors of dark fruits (fig) and spices (cinnamon and clove). There is a light to moderate presence of Belgian yeast and just a hint of bitterness in the finish that fades quickly.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with light amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness and alcohol warming in the finish.

O: This beer aged really well, it picked up some definite hints as if it had been barrel aged over the years and I think the sweetness has increased and it has mellowed overall. Very enjoyable, can't believe I let this one cellar so long before reviewing it.

Appearance - Light brown with some reddish tints. Pours with a big khaki head. Light wisps on the surface. Medium collar.

Smell - Not sold on the smell. Fusel alcohol. Fruity. Slight sherry.

Taste - Vast improvement. Plums, raisins, great fruit flavor. Darker caramel malts. Less alcohol.

Mouthfeel - Slick, slightly harsh. Well carbonated.

Overall - It's really a good beer, but it has its faults.

A: Pours a medium amber color with two fingers of fluffy white head. Great retention.

S: Very light on the nose, particularly for the style. I get very mild dark fruits, a bit of citrus and esters from the yeast. As the beer warms, I get more spicy esters, but dark fruits are very mild still.

T: Very similar to the aroma, just a bit more dark fruitiness. As the beer warms, I get some peppery flavors and some booze. Quite dry, though.

M: On the thin side with high carbonation.

O: The flavors here are decent, but I could use more dark fruits and a bit more complexity. The esters are a bit harsh and do not mix that well with the maltiness.

Appearance is hazy orange-copper. Head is sizable as expected for an abbey style ale, with good retention and lacing characteristics. Fruity esters are prominent on the nose with some notes of candi sugar and honey. A nice menagerie of fruit: ripe grape, apple, and plum. Some faint yeasty phenols. The aroma is great but too weak.

The flavor could best be described as a "strong Dubbel" and is disappointing for a quad. Quite dry for the style with a fairly hoppy finish. Way too much hop presence. Notes of white grape and toffee. Not really improving as it warms. The mouthfeel is a saving grace as it's a good match for the style.

Allagash has a rare miss on its hands with this. The $16 price adds to the disappointment.

A - orangish amber with a big, thick, white head; decent retention

S - apples, pear, yeast, Belgian funk

T - apple, yeast, clove, pear, some pepper

M - full bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a plush, fruity, estery, juicy beer. There are some spices that lend balance and offer depth. The ABV is really well hidden making this a dangerously drinkable beer. This is definitely a beer worth trying.
