Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

Allagash Curieux bottled in January 2008 and purchased two years ago at King Richard's in Michigan City for $14.99. 

Served in New Belgium tulip. 

A: Pours clear, polished pale gold with a short-lived head. Some random lacing and very good effervescence. 

S: Belgian candy sugar, toasted grain, bourbon, spiciness. Some toffee/caramel. Secondary barrel characteristics of vanilla, mint and coconut figure prominently in nose. A little butterscotch. 

T: Sweetness and spiciness, especially cloves, jump out. Bourbon/alcohol is still strong. Crystal malts are mature and subdued, supplying light caramel and raisin flavors. A note of oxidation. Dried out from aging. The secondary barrel characteristics are somewhat buried under bourbon, but they add complexity. 

M: Medium-heavy body and medium-light carbonation. Full mouthfeel that is mouthcoating and warming. 

O: I'm not a big fan of tripels and barrel-aged tripels; nonetheless, I find Curieux to be an enjoyable sipper.

Had on tap at Sticks ans Stones tonight.Poured into a goblit a lightly hazed lighter golden with a nicely formed white head.Aromas are big in the bourbon barrel department with mild phenols and spiced pears,a nice mix of things going on.Sweet bourbon vanilla flavors along with more sweet alcohol,spiced phenols are there but kept in check pretty well,some boozy fruit in the finish.A nice barrel aged tripel not over the top bourbon wise but it packs a kick.

Appearance – This special Allagash offering is dark, hazy orange in color with a smallish head.

Smell – The yeast backbone is substantial here and well complimented with some good, unsweetened orangish notes and a bit of pepper. The threat of alcohol looms large at the nose.

Taste – Yes, this is a big ABV Allagash. The first part of the taste is almost like a strong orange liqueur. The yeast eases up a bit but not much and the spices are a bit powdery.

Mouthfeel – This medium-bodied Tripel will dry your mouth with its powdery spices and sting your tongue with its high ABV.

Drinkability – If you like big, high-ABV Belgian yeast bombs (like I do) then this is for you.

Comments – I think this was one of the most frequently-ordered brews at the Anam Cara Belgian Beer Fest pre-party. It was quite the party favorite.

On tap at Roman's in Milwaukee.

Dusty orange gold body with spritzer carbonation and a healthy white cloud atop.

Huge vanilla/oak aroma is surprisingly balanced out by a luscious tropical fruit medley of lime, apricot, papaya, and an abundance of peach skin.

Smooth and warming feel with a bit of an alcohol bite/burn. Tropical fruit flavors are overwhelmed by the boozey/oaky/vanilla character. I find the barrel aging to be a detraction from an already solid, albeit delicate beer. Some spice and hop bitterness manages to shine through the booze.

Drinkability is destroyed by the barrel aging.

Not my cup of tea at all, but I’m not that in to barrel aging of most beers.

A: A golden beer with an orange hue and moderate haze. The white head is a mix of mostly compact bubbles with a few larger soapy bubbles mixed in. It leaves a fine lacing on the glass.

S: A medium-strong orange aroma with medium-light black pepper note and a light malt sweetness. The oak brings medium aromas of vanilla and coconut notes with a subtle whisky character in the background. There is a low floral alcohol aroma.

T: There is a blend of flavors matching the aroma just differing in intensity. The orange still dominates but the honey-like malt sweetness taken with coconut and vanilla from the oak and the light perfume-like, floral quality from the alcohol combine into a sort of adult candy thing, in the vain of how a black licorice or horehound isn't a kids candy. With a medium hops bitterness and a near equal sweetness the balance is about even, but the bitterness has a bit more staying power in the medium finish. The aftertaste is of orange and a slight orange peel bitterness with a light spice note.

M: A medium-full bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation.

O: A flavorful Belgian Tripel with a balanced oak character that compliments the beer and adds to the complex flavors.

Allagash Curieux(Bourbon Barrel- aged Tripel).
11% alcohol 750ml corked and caged bottle. Cork popped off like a mofo when opening.

A- Pours a crisp and clear orange fluid with active carbonation leading to a one inch head that falls to a thick froth leaving excellent patchy lacing.

S- Scents of fresh Belgian yeast upfront with grassy and citrus hops and light bourbon hints on the nose in alcohol fumes.

T-M- Taste is very tame for what I expected. Mild touches of Triple qualities of yeast, fresh citrusy hops, warming alcohol and very smooth and light bourbon flavors. At 11% I will say i'm amazed at the smooth mouthfeel from start to finish. Alcohol is hidden even at room temp. Wow. Light carbonation on the tongue allows this Triple to go down with a slight warming of the throat as it passes down to the belly.

D- Great beer hands down but for the price of 17.49 a 750Ml i'll most likely pass. Light bourbon notes compared to a regular barrel aged beer but with the mouthfeel and drinkablity of this one who gives a shit??? Cheers!

Served in a 10oz glass at Tyler's Taproom in Apex, NC.

Fantastic 2-fingers or so of head sitting on top of a slightly hazy light golden yellow brew. Lots of active carbonation. Head retention was very good and lacing was strong almost all the way down the glass.

The aroma is the first hint of something different here - there is a nice hint of the bourbon-vanilla-oak thing, presumably from the barrel aging. It's complex with some other fruit aromas mingling in there as well.

Trips are a favorite of mine and I wasn't sure about messing with it, but I'm glad Allagash did because this was awesome. The notes of oak, vanilla, and the spice notes of the tripel are simply a great combination. There is definitely a warming from the alcohol content, especially on the finish.

Overall a great brew. I love the tripel style and I like Allagash's take on the style. Nice!

A very interesting beer. It poured a medium golden color with a little cloudiness to it and a small white head that lingered till the last sip. The smell right away was full of vanilla alchohol and bourbon. The taste was very unique. It started out like a tripple with a bit of frutiness and malt sweetness and then as you are about to swallow the oak barrel characteristics kick in. The vanilla sweetness comes around and finnishes with a very smoothe, Maker's Mark-esque flavor. After pouring the yeast from the bottle, the flavor had a little more sweetness an frutiness. I would suggest setting the bottle on the side for a bit and letting all the yeast mix in as it yields a more flaverfull beer imo. But it is defiantly recommedned nonetheless.

Shared this bottle with my dad this afternoon. Bottled September 2004. After struggling with the cork a bit it popped out nicely. The beer poured a wonderful bright golden color with a small bubbly white head. A touch cloudy with lots of active carbonation. Aromas of bountiful tropical fruit with a fresh yeastiness. Candy sweet scents meld into a warm bourbon undertone. Hints of vanilla and wood work their way into the simply lovely aroma. Each inhalation beckons me to take a sip.

Curieux brings a smooth, slightly creamy maltiness accented by a mix of tropical fruit flavors, coconut and vanilla. Midway through I get a nice yeastiness with a warming stream of bourbon. Finishes beautifully, a bit dry with a touch of lingering wood. An awesome barrel aged tripel, easily the best I've ever sampled. Delicately balanced with only a hint of alcohol and the perfect marriage of bourbon flavors from the barrel.

Mouthfeel is smooth and medium bodied. Goes down so easily and is actually quite refreshing. This is almost deceptively drinkable, at over 9% abv I could be in trouble before I know it with this one. A treat to drink, I'm sad this is my only bottle. Hopefully I will come across this beer again. Cheers to Allagash for creating a Jim Beam barrel aged work of art.

Smells fascinating... like some kind of moldy exotic cheese. Complex and beyond my capability of description.

A lighter colored beer. Cloudy golden pale. Small head.

Taste... well, you can really taste the bourbon & oak notes, specifically on the first sip & the finish. But only very subtley. It doesnt hit you in the face with the alcohol like you might expect. Masterfully blended. Very full-bodied and tons of character. You'll need to have more than one bottle to fully dissect this beer.

Drinkability? As I can only find this in one specific location, a nearby bar, I will be trying this again sometime in the near future, probably near christmas. I look forward to the opportunity. An excellent, complex beer. To be savored.

This id a wonderful beer. It pours a dark yellow, without too much of a head. There is some lacing, but not a lot. It has a spicy/fruity odor to it. The taste is complex: fruit, spice, and a darker backtaste. It's feels great in the mouth, not too carbonated. A really great beer to drink.

It's fizzy like a Coke product, but I suppose it's supposed to be. A bourbon barrel-aged tripel--I haven't had many of these, but it's far lighter in color than I expected: hardly yellow; mostly white; but cloudy. From a harsher perspective, it looks like a Bud Light served in a dirty glass; even from a more appreciative and respectful perspective, it looks like cloudy piss. Like cloudy piss, in fact, its contents are mysterious and curious.

The smell is provocatively fruity. There's some dirty but subtle bourbon backbone to what is a banana and green apple tree. The yeast brings about a spicy, peppery olfactory tingle. It's remarkable!

Dry white pepper combines with a freeze-dried banana vibe. This is a beer I would take hiking...to wash down my trail mix. The touch of bourbon is more of a smell and a feel than a taste. It makes me think either the bourbon wasn't that strong, the barrel was only freshly used, and/or the beer sat within the barrel only for a limited time. It's good. It's weird, though. It harly tastes like a beer. It's a carbonated refreshment to accompany my cashew and raisin mix! I mean, really, never have I so associated a beer with a mountain hike!! Course, an 11% 750 to the dome might not be the best to bolster survival skills.

The feel is dry like a chardonnay. That peppery Beligan yeast tickle is a tad spicy. It's a concoction--like something cooked in a cauldron. It's the most impressive beer I've tasted that looks like it looks. Really, I could set it up next to Natty Light in a dirty glass and you'd have to investigate a bit to discriminate the difference. I could do with a little more bourbon, but I respect the fact that it imparts only a minimal influence.

Drinkability's good, but it's that peculiar dryness that probably most hinders quaffability. Being that it's 11%, it's noteworthy that something besides alcohol solvency hampers drinkability! I like it, it's neat, it's worth sharing, and it's of a quality that deems it worthy of just having around.

Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle into a Dogfish Head signature glass.

A: Hazy copper pour, the constant stream of bubbles from the etched glass add to the firm creamy head. While the head shrinks to a small covering, the excellent lacing continues without fault.

S: Typical Belgian smell, although maybe slightly more alcoholic. For some reason I am also getting a slight wheat smell. And of course the expected Bourbon/Oak from the ageing.

T: Alcohol up front, followed by the Bourbon and Oak. Some Vanilla makes it through the much stronger alcohol notes. Very well rounded.

M: Just enough carbonation. Medium'ish feel. Slightly creamy and dry, makes me want to have another sip.

D: An easily drinkable barrel aged offering from Allagash. The alcohol is pretty well hidden and the carbonation is perfect for this style. When it comes down to it, it is not hard to drink the 750ml yourself.
