Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

To put it simply.

There is way too much bourbon flavor in this beer. It tastes like they took a regular beer and added a shot of jim bean to it.

The aroma itself is somewhat pleasant. I enjoyed smelling the beer at least.

I would reccomend this beer to try at least once, but thats about it.

750 ml bottle, bought at Total Wine in NoVA. I think it was $14 or so.

Appearance: This is a great looking beer. Clear golden with a large fluffy white head, great retention, and excellent lacing. This has the look of a real Belgian tripel.

Smell: Big and fruity-- pears, peaches, some tropical fruits. Yeasty. Lots of bourbony vanilla, a little boozy.

Taste: Much more hot bourbon than expected. The bourbon imparts lots of vanilla. Sweet and very fruity, as well as some light caramel. Hot and a little bit of alcohol bitterness near the end, then it sweetens up again. The tripel is big, but not quite big enough to stand up to the bourbon.

Mouthfeel: Its well carbonated, but with enough tripel-like stickness to round it out. Pretty well done.

Overall: Its a good beer, with some excellent attributes, but would be better with a little less bourbon, or maybe a little more age. This one was bottled 7/2011, so its just six months old.

This is a quality beer. By the end, it leaves a good taste and I could drink more which is the best part of the beer. There isn't anything over the top about this beer. Just my opinion, but a bit over ratted for the price. This would be a go to beer if it was half the price, but it isn't one I'd line up to get at the current price. Again a good beer, but not one I'd go to again unless the price was least. It does still prove that Allagash can make quality beer.

Cheers,
Dave

750ml caged and corked bottle. 10/11 bottle date. Poured into a snifter glass.

A: Pours a deep orange color.  Cloudy as hell.  Basically no head unless you pour aggressively.  Not a lot of lacing.

S: I definitely get that oak and vanilla.  Almost get some farmhouse funk I think. Smells really inviting.

T: Lots of vanilla.  Oak notes.  Brett. Caramel.

M: Full but not like a stout.

O: Always bypassed this one in years past, solely on the price tag. It's a really solid beer.
