Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

10 oz. pour into a tulip at Barcade, Philly.

A- Hazy golden body. Thin white head leaves a little lacing.

S- Quite fruity, with the Belgian yeast coming out. A little bit of an earthy, booze hint as well.

T- A dry earthiness, woody hint is rather apparent, along with a very sweet fruit and booze combination. I think the aging brings out the grain in the flavor as well.

M- Pretty light body. Easy to drink and bubbly; champagne-esque.

O- Pretty yummy. I think the barrel aging really brings out some new attributes to the traditional Tripel.

The hazy, yellow-amber liquid was topped by an inch-tall crown of sudsy, off-white froth. Splotches of lacing coated the glass. The head faded to a thin, lasting film.

Belgian yeast notes were apparent in the nose. Crisp, fruity and phenolic. Slightly sweet with subtle vanilla notes. Touch of citrus. Lemon peel was most apparent. Hints of bourbon came through as well.

The flavor profile was rather lackluster. Belgian yeast notes appeared on the front end. Slightly phenolic. Subtle bready, toasty notes were present as well. Crisp, dry and lemony in the center. Hints of tart and bitter citrus rind were noticeable on the back end. The finish was oaky, dry and much hotter than I anticipated. I was amazed that this was only 11%.

The mouthfeel was one of the better things about this beer. It was smooth, supple and frothy. The liquid contained a fine, lively effervescence.

Curieux was a huge letdown, especially considering that I paid nearly $20 for this bottle. Not only was the flavor profile simplistic and quite harsh, but the bourbon element was practically non-existant. Allagash makes some terrific beers, but this definitely is not one of them.

A: Pours a lightly hazy golden yellow color with 2+ fingers of head that slowly fades down to a nice cap after a few minutes

S: Belgian yeast imparts some nice fruity and spicy notes while the barrel character gives off some vanilla and oak. Alcohol lightly twitches the nose

T: Quite complex. Starts off with the yeasty fruit and spiciness and goes into the oak, vanilla, bourbon, and alcohol. Lightly sweet into the finish. The length of time it takes to go from the yeasty tripel aspect into the barrel character varies and makes things interesting

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Lightly drying

O: A very unique and tasty treat (albeit, quite expensive) that makes for a nice sipper. The barrel character works well with the base beer and imparts a nice complexity. Definitely worth trying because there is just nothing else like it

Very pale golden; light Haze.
Sweet aroma with a pronounced contribution from Bourbon barrel aging. The Bourbon barrel is even more obvious in tasting and approaches, but does not exceed, a reasonable level. Still, a bit more Bourbon flavor than I would prefer. Good thing this is a blend of BB and fresh ale.
High ABV is partly hidden but there is some inevitable warming.
Medium-light body with ample carbonation.

Lovely lemon-yellow hue with a thin, lively white head (<1 finger). Nearly opaque; hazy yet lively. Lovely flat lacing.

Fresh Tripel scent: dry and bright, with hints of citrus (especially lemon), wheat, and Belgian yeast and candi. Very gentle Tripel nose, with a hint of bourbon in the background on deep inhalations.

The bourbon may be hiding in the scent, but not in the flavor! I am completely blown away, in all regards. First: gentle, standard Tripel, albeit less hoppy. Lemon, wheat, and yeast hit your tongue immediately. Just as you think this is an ordinary (but very, very good) Tripel, the bourbon influence washes over your tongue. Strong notes of bourbon, vanilla, and pineapple (no idea where that's from), in varying strengths and representations.

At 11% ABV, this isn't the strongest beer, yet the bourbon makes itself known yet again via a very pleasant - and noticeable - warming effect down your throat. This is a medium-full brew, lively but not stinging in the mouth, with an easy foaming effect. I can't say the ABV is hidden (see: bourbon), but it's extremely smooth and drinkable. Coats your mouth thickly (and pleasantly).

I love Tripels; I hate bourbon. When the two meet, then, who is the winner? You, the consumer, my friend! This maybe lacks some of the normal complexity of a standard Tripel, but then massively makes up for it with the bourbon influence. An absolutely incredible and delightful experience. I would love to try one of these bottle aged, just to see if the Tripel flavors become more dominant, and the bourbon more subdued.

22 oz bottle purchased at Oliver's in Albany, poured into a tulip.

Hazy and golden, strong bubble action. Small, but nice looking head. Small amounts of lacing. Nice looking stuff.

The smell is pure coconut. Some unidentifiable spices, sugar, vanilla, and lots of booze. Great smell.

The taste is similar to the smell, but amplified. An intense amount of coconut, oak, and vanilla drowns the original tripel. Not much tripel flavor left here, really- the bourbon barrels transform this beer into something else entirely. Alcohol kick is present, and gets to be a bit much as I try to finish this 22 oz bottle on my own. The sweetness starts out great, but gets cloying when you try to drink a lot of this beer. I would suggest sharing it- 8-12 oz is just enough to get a taste of this incredible beer.

The mouthfeel is decent, well carbonated, full, and a bit sticky.

Recommended if you can share it.

A: Pours a hazy straw color with a smattering of pure white head which fizzles out fairly quickly to a persistent ring. Leaves a few ephemeral streaks of lacing.

S: Lots of oak and a touch of vanilla bean, banana frosting, and sweetish malt.

T: Loads of tannic oak which dry the mouth. Tastes slightly overextracted. Some sweetish malt and a touch of vanilla. A little boozy, esp. on the finish.

M: Soft, light carbonation with a little bite. Medium-full body.

O: They overdid with the barrel treatment; I imagine this is what adding oak cubes or spirals to the fermenter tastes like. Kind of a one dimensional beer.

From a 750 ml bottle (bottled on April 19, 2013) into a wine glass. Reviewed from notes dated September 2, 2013.

A-The brew pours with a thin, white head. Retention is decent. The beer is lighter in color for the style, nearly straw-colored or very-light golden. There is a slight haze.

S-The smell is lightly oaked...I don't get much in the way of boozy bourbon, but rather, some smooth vanilla and caramel to go along with the grassy, sweet-pear flavors of the base tripel. Incredibly mild for 11% ABV.

T-The taste is also restrained (mostly in a good way). The tripel beer underneath is pleasant with light fruits and a bit of spicy grass. The barrel comes through mostly in the form of vanilla, with some caramel and a bit of drying, oaky character. Again, alcohol is incredibly well-concealed for the high ABV.

M-The feel is a nice match for the flavors. Medium heft with moderate carbonation.

O-This is a really classy beer. The barrel-aging is noticeable, but not hit-you-in-the face boozy or drying or funky. You can also tell that the base beer is a solid tripel. The best trick this beer can perform, however, is making you think you are drinking a normal beer not an 11% monster. All the positives notwithstanding, I could have used a little more complexity in the profile to nudge this beer from great to world-class.

A: A golden beer with an orange hue and moderate haze. The white head is a mix of mostly compact bubbles with a few larger soapy bubbles mixed in. It leaves a fine lacing on the glass.

S: A medium-strong orange aroma with medium-light black pepper note and a light malt sweetness. The oak brings medium aromas of vanilla and coconut notes with a subtle whisky character in the background. There is a low floral alcohol aroma.

T: There is a blend of flavors matching the aroma just differing in intensity. The orange still dominates but the honey-like malt sweetness taken with coconut and vanilla from the oak and the light perfume-like, floral quality from the alcohol combine into a sort of adult candy thing, in the vain of how a black licorice or horehound isn't a kids candy. With a medium hops bitterness and a near equal sweetness the balance is about even, but the bitterness has a bit more staying power in the medium finish. The aftertaste is of orange and a slight orange peel bitterness with a light spice note.

M: A medium-full bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation.

O: A flavorful Belgian Tripel with a balanced oak character that compliments the beer and adds to the complex flavors.

Note: when I first had this beer a couple months back I did not enjoy it. I am not a fan of having my "beer tastes" invaded by "whiskey tastes", in general. That being said..

A: cloudy yellow with decent retention and lacing
S: strong on the wood, with some notes of the whiskey. A citrus-pineapple undertone seems present
T/M: initial tastes are like the smell, up front is a little flat beer taste, immediately followed by the bourbon barrel taste to save the day. This taste is subdued by the fruit flavor in the beer, my initial thoughts reminded me of pineapple, and the combo almost of piña colada. The end wood notes fade into a taste of paper (strange but not off-putting)
O: I think this beer could grow on me. The bourbon does not overpower the beer as much as some. The ABV is also pretty well hidden.

the original and best version of this style, and when I revisit it, I am always reminded why its so popular, highly acclaimed, and darn tasty. it pours a opaque bright golden color with as much head as you care to stir up. bone white and permanent. it smells really strongly of vanilla, intense bourbon whiskey notes, wheat malt, Belgian yeast, fresh oak, and warming alcohol. there are subtle floral notes from the yeast in the taste, elegant and lively, while the sweetness of the vanilla brings out the best of the cereal malts. bourbon is obvious, its familiar too, and the barrel just brings it all together. I don't taste booze at all, which shocks me at 11% abv. it drinks just way too easy. carbonated very effervescently, this beer simply dances on the palate. usually tripels are sweeter than I like, but this one comes out just right on the sugar scale. complex doesn't begin to describe curieux, which has to be up there with allagashs best work. this is one of those beers that every serious beer drinker needs to try in their lifetime.

Found this randomly at a local grocery store and was beckoned to try it by the gleaming reviews it received on here. This is also my first brew from Allagash. First thing that surprised me was how light, and transparent it is. I was expecting something heavier and darker. But it gleams a bright off-golden with thin head. It is a great looking beer, and in a wide mouth glass it seems to glow as light refracts through the almost entirely translucent liquid. The next thing that surprised me was the smell. It was actually rather muted, and not the full force wave of smells that accompanies most barrel aged, heavy duty brews. This was light, mildly sweet, with notes of wheat and mild citrus. The taste is absolutely great, and wonderfully smooth. It starts with some fresh fruits like banana and orange and finishes with oats and mild hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and light, and very refreshing. No booze despite the 11%, but a nice warming feeling ensues. Wonderful beer, but a tad pricey if honest.

Thank you Kerry for the chance to try this fantastic beer.

Pours a hazy yellow with a creamy head of bone white foam that fell luxuriously to a thick ring and left plenty of handsome lace. Body of the beer glows with promise and is the soft pastel color of golden sunshine.

Nose is the definition of complex. It's sublime with bourbon, oak and tropical fruit to tempt. There's a tartness and some mild yeast with a slight breath of alcohol. Picks up some earth as it warms and a touch of pepper. Light banana and clove emerge with a touch of vanilla.

Taste follows the nose and unfolds like a symphony. The ripe fruit is sticky and sweet. Almost candied. The bourbon lays quietly underneath oaky and deep. The alcohol warmth and the pepper bring out the fruits so well. The woody quality and the vanilla accents the malt which is smooth and long and has earthy tones as well. The honey sweetness of the malt and the and the bourbon create a sensual mouthfeel that is strong and a little heavier than the usual tripel. The bourbon lingers int he aftertaste with a hint of smoke and the candied fruit.

This beer continued to unfold throughout the drink and the fruits were varied and splendid. Pear, pineapple, apple, orange, apricot, mango. At one point I beheld coconut. There was a slight sour that gave an immense drinkablility to all the rich sweetness. The buttery smooth malt and the rich bourbon were the perfect compliment and added a depth that resounded. Lingered a touch hot in the aftertaste like bourbon and like sweet candy.

Captivating, expansive and radiant.

Pours murky orange/golden with a finger of white fluffy head.

Smell is soft, fluffy, oaky, and maybe a hint of tart and funk? Some of the gum/clove come out with the Belgian yeast, but seems a bit subdued.

Taste rich smooth vanilla. Very powerful. Oak and Belgian yeast mixed very well, no tartness, just the best parts of a trippel, but stronger and heavier.

Interesting experience.

A- A gorgeous bright golden body with a fluffy white head that settles some, but stays throughout the duration. Crisp and clear, with lots of carbonation bubbles seen rising through the body.

S- Lots of the traditional tripel aromas with pears, other tree fruits, hints of citrus, slight breadiness, and some oak and vanilla influences from the barrel.

T- Sweet and fruity pears and peach-like flavors give was to sweet bourbon with oak and vanilla coming through along with some sweet candied sugar flavors. Just a hint of booziness to finish it out.

M- Medium-high carbonation, very crisp and full flavored, with the body being on the fuller side. A slight hint of booze, but overall very drinkable.

O- Allagash tripel is one of my favorites for the style and this is an interesting take on a tripel. The bourbon barrels add an interesting element to the beer and works very nicely with the style.

Curieux opens to a banana and clove-laced Belgian nose that also bears intense apple aromas, with tart Granny Smith and sugary Golden Delicious notes spilling forth. These apple aromas fade after a few seconds, replaced by an ashy note, like faint cigarette smoke mixed with char and bourbon remnants, much like the interior of a gentleman’s club. The banana and clove notes still remain, spiced up with vanilla and peppercorn, with small touches of caramel and brown sugar for sweetness, and all that atop light sweet biscuits, berries, and blood orange slices. The ashy, faintly bourbon notes are what separate this from other Tripels, especially in the intensity of the cigarette smoke notes. As a whole, the aroma is very nice, being subtle and understated, but simultaneously potent and nuanced, and setting a high bar for other beers to follow.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a banana and clove note that is joined instantly by sour lemons and pink grapefruits, as well as maraschino cherries, berries, blood oranges, and bits of pineapple, the fruit esters being unbelievably complex and varied, as well as potent, bordering on fruit cocktail extract. Threads of vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar add further levels of sweetness. The bourbon barrel aging does bring in further vanilla, but also adds light wood, and a heavy dose of smoky, spicy bourbon, coming across here like world-class spiced rum, blending excellently with the complex fruits. Biscuit, baguette, and a smidgen of rising whole wheat dough add earthiness. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, though here the complex fruits are joined by one of the beer’s only weak points, being a bourbon-vodka alcohol vapor that permeates everything and somewhat spoils the taste, though it does die off somewhat after a time, leaving only a smoky, spicy bourbon note with some remaining fruits lingering on the tongue. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is excellent beer, and a fine example of the subtleties that can come from barrel aging, as opposed to the bourbon slams that often result. The beer as a whole is very well balanced between fruits and smoky, spicy alcohols, and is definitely in a class of its own, as opposed to the dozens of Tripels that seem like clones of each other in comparison. Well worth trying.

General - I got this 22 oz bottle from a store a couple of weeks ago. Really nice corked bottle. Drinking it out of a chalice type glass that I had.

Appearance - The color is around an SRM 7 or so, beautiful light golden. Head was a light white frothy but it quickly faded. Fairly clear with just a touch of chill haze. This is a little too cold to be drinking right now, just out of the fridge.

Aroma - MMMM Bourbon! This thing has a big hit of the bourbon barrel that it was aged in. There is also an alcohol scent, not unsurprising with the 11% ABV on this bad boy. in the background there are some light citrus scents with a touch of banana. Really great scent.

Taste - If God were to brew a beer, it would taste like this. Seriously this is one of if not the best triples that I've had. The flavor of bourbon is perfect with the alcoholic burn and slight fruitiness. Amazing is all I can say.

Mouthfeel - A slightly thin feeling with a moderately high carbonation level. There is an alcoholic burn on the back of the throat also.

Overall - Wow, this is awesome. I couldn't ask for a better beer after a long day. Refreshing yet strong with a lot of great flavor.

Bought this bottle in Vermont. Bottled February 2013.

A - Honey golden, bright with strong carbonation. One finger creamy white head. Sticky walls of nice lace remain with a half finger of retention that champs the whole way through. Body turned dark orange with yeast addition and head became much thicker.

S - Honey, yeast. Sweet spice, lemon. No bourbon really. 'Typical' Tripel aroma.

T - Lemon, bready malt, honey, bourbon comes out lightly. Some woodiness, honey. Hard to see where the bourbon is supposed to show up, but it does taste nice and is complex. Lemon and spice are prominent. Some alcohol comes out in the finish too. Coconut?

M - Strong carbonation, full body with a nice creaminess and a mildly dry finish with lemon and some oaky vanilla.

O/D - Quite a nice Tripel. I'm finding it quite difficult to pick up any real assertive bourbon notes, but that might not be a bad thing. I can see how the barrel has imparted some subtleties that have complimented the base beer well. Quite a nice and complex beer with lot's to keep you thinking about it and an ABV forcing you to take your time with it. I noticed myself drinking this way too quickly for its ABV, which isn't always a bad thing. Well done.

I am not sure if I have had any beers from Allagash. We can't get them here, and I had to get this and the other bottle on our list in a trade. I guess this beer is rare. I was looking for this beer online, and found it on RateBeer and BeerAdvocate. This beer is rated 99 on RateBeer and 100 on BeerAdvocate. It must be good! I have been on a tripel kick lately. I am not a huge fan of blond (or blonde) beers, love a good dubbel, and don't really care for most quads. However, most tripels deliver.

Now that I think about it, I don't know many breweries from Maine. I saw they were from Portland, and thought… Portland, Maine? Never heard of such a place! Doesn't mean they don't know how to make good beer. Actually, doesn't mean they don't know how to luck into making good beer. Fun story on how this beer was first discovered. The bottling date on the bottle says, "February 1, 2013"… and I am sure a few years on this would help. But we are impatient. Oh, and it's the 4th of July. Might as well celebrate. Cheers!

In the Glass: This looks like a glass of champagne. There are TONS of bubbles here. The beer looks like a tripel in the glass, with a nice thick white head. Funny story… I am getting a text message from Josh Williams about the Founders Devil Dancer. It's a triple IPA. Not the same as this… but funny they both sound the same. Anyway, this beer is inviting especially knowing they use Jim Beam barrels.

Nose: Not much bourbon on the nose. It has a nice somewhat sweet aroma with a hint of honey. Speaking of honey, I bought some honey for a recipe the other day. I have been eating a spoon of it every morning. It's SO good. The beer still has a pretty thick head, so I will wait for a few minutes.

Flavor: The flavor just coats my palate and gives me a typical tripel experience at first. Then, as I swallow the booze becomes obvious; it's a little bit too hot. I am sure a few years in the bottle would fix that. It is also a bit too cold. I could spend an hour with this bottle if I had to. Maybe I will… it's a holiday. I don't have anything else going on today.

I swished the beer around in my mouth on the second sip, and the sweetness really opened up. For as much as this beer is, and for the trouble we had to go to get it, I am not blown away with the flavor. I would like to try the tripel without the barrels. You don't really get much bourbon flavor here. Not as much as I was expecting. Cool story on where they get their bottles, though.

Mouthfeel: Like I said, there are a ton of bubbles in the glass. Not as much when you sip it. They aren't obvious, and the beer isn't that carbonated. I bet, as this beer heats up, the bubbles will mellow out and the beer will also mellow out in terms of the complexity. This beer has high ratings online, and it's good… but it's not "world-class".

Aftertaste: The finish is nice and somewhat drying, but not the typical sweetness that I get from a good Belgian tripel. Barrel aged beers are tough for me. They are either amazing and you can really taste the bourbon, or they are like this and you pick up some of the flavors from the barrel, but you don't taste the bourbon itself. I wonder if I were to toss in a splash of bourbon and mix it up if that would change the flavor of the beer. I'm not going to, but it's a though!

According to the label, they only bottled 1400 cases of this beer. It's rare… but it didn't blow me away. Also, as I was tracking this beer on Untappd, I see they have a Booker's Barrel, and a Four Roses Barrel offering. Does anyone know if that is more rate than this? I would love to try them all side by side. Maybe I will get a bottle oft heir Tripel in my next trade to compare. Not a bad beer, just not what I was expecting. on draft at sams in Durham. into a flute glass.

pours a cloudy yellow with a nice inch thick white head. smell is faint bourbon, could be more there. the taste however is amazing... great bourbon character but not too strong, balanced very well with the triple. you know its a triple and not just straight bourbon. medium bodied with medium carbonation. goes down smooth and easy.

overall a superb triple. allagash always impresses.

10 oz. pour into a footed Allagash chalice.

Appearance: Pours a golden blonde with a small head that remains visible for a while, subtle lacing on the glass.

Smell: The bourbon and oakiness is evident, yet not overpowering, and it is accompanied in the nose with belgian yeast and some citrusy sweetness. I also get malty sweetness and a bit more fruit.

Taste: A bit of caramel and honey with some earthy qualities from the yeast. A bit of oak and just a hit of bourbon, delicious beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice creaminess. The alcohol is noticeable but it still is drinkable for its size.

Overall: This is definitely one of the best tripels I have had, and probably even better than their standard tripel. Not easy to get but definitely worth a try if you can get it.

Poured on-tap at the brewery tasting room, the beer is a slightly hazed, honey-gold coloring with a white filmy ring on the surface. Nose of grain and sweetness, with a heavy bourbon overlay. There is spicing that helps to cut the richness in the aromas. Flavors of bourbon initially, with booze and warmth, followed by a toasted grain backbone, honey and vanilla sweetness, and subtle earthiness. Smooth and surprisingly light in body, there is a boozy and rich aftertaste with a slick, slow lingering finish. Wow!

2013 vintage poured into a snifter. Cloudy amber-gold in color with a two finger head. Leaves some nice but spotty lacing behind. Yeasty notes of the standard Allagash tripel are more subdued here. Faint notes of oak and vanilla are additional contributions from the barrels. Overall floral note with maybe some ripe pear.

The flavor follows the nose in being less fruity and yeasty with a corresponding increase in sweetness and woodiness. Dull aftertaste that kind of lingers. Some alcohol heat but no sting, which is impressive for an 11% beer. By no means a mediocre tripel, this still hits most of the right notes for the style, but the vibrancy of the fruit and yeast notes are missing.

Overall, the barrel aging doesn't really do any favors. Allagash makes an excellent tripel that isn't improved upon here.
