Allagash Curieux was the first foray into barrel aging. Curieux is made by aging our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam bourbon barrels for eight weeks in our cold cellars. The aged beer is then blended back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting beer is soft with coconut and vanilla notes, with hints of bourbon.

1-yr-old cellared bottle brought over by the old man. Pours a cloudy golden-rust with an off-white head so big and thick looking I thick it could support a kiwi dollar. Leaves behind lots of delicate lacing. Smells of vanilla, oak and alcohol. Didn't pick up any whiskey/bourbon notes in the aroma but it comes though very clearly in the taste... along with associated flavors such as vanilla and oak. Bit of honey sweetness and spicey yeast as well. Produces a nice warming effect in the aftertaste. Velvety smooth texture with just enough carbonation. Not as complex as I hoped or the easiest thing to drink but still highly enjoyable. Better than the first time I had it.

Bottled in May of 2007.

A golden blondish appearance. Very thick white head with some sticky lacing. Aromas of citrus, candied sugar, oak, and soft bourbon. Complex in flavor. Tastes of fruity lemon, green apple, spicy clove, vanilla, and oak. Definitely had that boozy warming effect after each sip. The oak seemed to come out more in the finish. Mouth feel smooth and soft. Moderate carbonation. Overall drinkability was interesting. The bourbon barrel aging didn’t do it for me but never the less it was fun to try. Cheers!

750ml corked and caged bottle, September 2007 bottling, a Christmas gift from my brother Nick. Poured into a Chimay goblet is a rich golden color with a bit of chill haze and lots of bubbles both sticking to the side of the glass and rising to the top. Thick and creamy off-white head on top is a good finger and a half, and recedes to a more than adequate lace. Also leaves patches of stick on the sides, but it never quite kicks that haze.

Initially I get vanilla, oak and a nutiness on the nose, products of the barrel aging I'm guessing. Not much that would normally be there with a tripel, to be honest, other than some sweetness. Barrel dominates here but it sure smells nice. As it warms up there is some more fruitiness on the nose.

Vanilla and some bourbon flavor are prominent in the taste just as they were the smell, along with an oakiness, too. Tripel characters play more on the palate than the nose, though, as I get some malt sweetness, light spiciness and fruit. The bourbon characters really add to and complement rather than dominate (a la KBS) the flavor in this beer, although the bourbon is definitely strong. Some alcohol burn toward the end hits the back of the throat, but so what, this is damn tasty.

Mouthfeel has a chewy medium-full body and is very smooth and creamy.

This is an awesome brew! Dangerously delicious and drinkable at 11%. I found myself taking very frequent sips to explore the complexities of flavor, and even spending far more time with the glass to my nose than I do with a typical brew. I'd love to get another bottle of this and leave it in the cellar for awhile. Great stuff!

750ml bottle, corked and caged. august 2007 vintage. 560 cases bottled. sampled dec 31/07.

pours hazy golden amber with a small dense off-white head. the head drops slowly and leaves lots of lace.

aroma is good. bourbon, vanilla, and tripel. bit of peach and apricot. orange peel. i get a bit of peaty smoke coming through too.

taste is good. nice bourbon presence that isn't overbearing. big vanilla. touch of clove and orange peel. alcohol. peach and apricot. bready malt.

mouthfeel is good. medium-low carbonation level. medium body.

drinkability is great. i really like the mix of bourbon and tripel. both stand tall and compliment each other well. nice balance too. i really enjoyed this one, even more than the plain tripel.

Pours a gold orange that is a bit darker and clouded of course. The flavor is presented with an almost milky mouthfeel that is thick and wooded. Smooth and almost a bit spicy, but subdued in nature. Supremely crafted and masterfully aged. This is a definite pleasure to drink.

Hadthis one on tap at the Brick Store Pub. I've hadthis a number of times now, several times on draft and several in the bottle. The bottle is good, but draft is better, not quite as spicy and harsh and the bourbon flavor seems purer and cleaner while also being a tad more delicate. I can't recall any other Bourbon tripels that I've had, surprisingly that elixer works well with this style of beer.

Pours slightly darker than golden with great lacing. Aromas of bourbon, sweet malt underneath that, and stored apples and pears with a touch of cream. Similar flavor profile. Heavy, but clean and pure bourbon, typical tripel tastes and some pear brandy on the finish. Quite creamy mouthfeel. This is a delight to drink. It works, and the bourbon is so well integrated that it doesn't overwhelm the tripel flavors, it enhances them. I've had this with beer lovers who don't like bourbob, and they still really like this.

A- Pours a deep golden, light amber color with a three finger head. Great retention and loads of delicate lace. Slight chill haze before it warms.

S- Rich, warm malty aromas, followed by a distinct whiskey note, and hints of vanilla. Spicy yeast phenols round everything out. Very nice indeed.

T- Slight caramel sweetness, with loads of spicy yeast show up right away, followed by a wave of soft vanilla and bourbon flavors. The bourbon/whiskey type flavors of wood, vanilla, and sweet malt comes in waves, and make the body and flavor profile very round, warm, and cozy feeling. Quite complex and interesting.

M- Moderate body, low carbonation.

D- decent, but you've really got to love bourbon to enjoy this. I think the heavy bourbon flavor makes you think that its even higher than the 11%, even though the alcohol is well hidden. I chalk it up to a mental association.

Overall, a damn fine beer from a great brewery. Most of Allagash's barrel series beers are pretty outstanding, and this is no exception. Well worth picking up a bottle, assuming that you enjoy bourbon from time to time.

The Duvel Tulip I picked out for this sampling seemed very appropriate, as Allagash Curieux came out foamy, pale, and slightly cloudy. The smell was clean and elegant. I could detect a faint hint of vanilla in the nose, but not much Bourbon. The taste was sweet and soothing, but a little too simple considering the barrel aging process. Not much in the way of oak flavors here, but based on my recollection, this came across a lot smoother than the Tripel. The alcohol was well hidden except for the warmth. A little flourish of hops was all that I could detect. Soft and creamy in the mouth, and aftertaste lingered on.

Sampled from the cask at the Publick House in Brookline, MA. A: Golden honey orange, very thick, legs all over the glass. S: Very sweet, the oak is definitely present, toasted malts, breads, some fruits in there as well. T: A wonderful honey/fruit sweetness up front with a nice dry bitter finish. Really fantastic. M: Thick, smooth. D: When I walked into the Publick House this was the first beer I ordered, and I was not disappointed. It's a really beautiful, extremely well balanced, well-tempered tripel. I'm going to try to make it back to the Publick House in the next few days to try it again.

A: Little pop when corked. Thins lace with active carbonation though. Golden-peach colored. Hazy, probably due to bottle refermentation.
S: Fruity-sweet and dry like a sauvignon blanc. A little bourbon, caramel and sweet bread.
T: Vanilla-ey smooth - first impression: amazing. Slight vegetal aftertaste.
M: Smooth yet textured well like a nice soft fleecy blanket.
D: Strong but I want more! So nice.

Only got this beer because I had a gift certificate and would not normally spend the money. Poured a straw gold color with about a finger of quick dissipating head. Smells like bourbon with a touch of caramel. Light on the mouth with lots of carbonation I want to say the same as most Belgian style beers. alcohol is hidden well with oak malt and yeast. Some fruit ester from the yeast. would suggest this beer. Maybe I'll stop being such a tight ass and start splurging on beers like this more often.

on tap at beachwood bbq. pours a hazy orange, almost ipa color. aroma of bourbon and belgian yeast. lighter carbonation than expected from a belgian, but thats welcome in this beer. finishes with citrius and bourbon. all in all a delicious beer. highly recomended, completly different than in bottles in a good way.

on tap and in the bottle, this is a truly unique tripel. it seems like enough has been said about this beer, but i didn't see much mention of the nice, coconutty scent and flavor. i found this to be one of the most dominant, especially on tap. taste of bourbon is there too, without being overly boozy. my favorite of allagash's high end offerings lately. keep 'em coming rob!!!

A cloudy honey-amber golden with a nice thick head. Aroma is fruity and malty with strong banana and lemon tones. The rich wheaty flavor fairly fills the mouth, and the strong hoppy bitter undertone gives it a nice kick! It goes down smoothly with a strong alcohol bite that is more like hard liquor than beer.

Poured into a chalice a murky light/medium golden yellow color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy white head, a few oil slicks and sticky lacing around the edges. The nose is malty, yeasty, nice touch of the bourbon, a touch of caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, a tad on the yeasty side, a nice touch of bourbon. The alcohol is hidden fairly well. Full body. Very drinkable, this is a nice take on a Tripel, another awesome brew from Allagash, highly recommended.

Dark amber but translucent with a one finger head when poured in a wide chalice. Strong bourbon smell overwhelming any malty or hoppy aromas. Very pronouced bourbon taste with soft but complex oak tannins and crisp malt finish. A light but sharp carbonation that brings out a burn from the high alcohol content reminiscent of whiskey/bourbon/scotch but with much less grimace. I love anjeo tequilla's but I have yet to get into whiskey/bourbon/scotch, and in fact despise JD, however this beer was very interesting and quite delicious. I bet it goes excellent with barbeque and intend to find out soon. (Bottled June 2006-Drank November 2007, Case 398)

Into the elongated Stone Tulip

A - Light murky honey, small white head, slightly sudsy lacing that stays pretty well.

S - Lemon, bread and wood (new wood, like tannic freshly planed wood).

T- Tripel style for sure. Wood, banana, sugar and yeast, finished with slightly bitter dryness.

M - Medium body, nice carbonation.

D - As is often true with beers of this style, you need to let it sit and warm up a bit to get the true value of the beer. It deepens as you wait. Still, not a beer I want all night.

750ml bottling dated May 2007, poured into my Koningshoeven goblet, Curieux ('curious') is a hazy gold with a thin a thin white head that leaves modest, sticky lace.

Aroma is very heavy on the vanilla and bourbon aspects of the oak, with much less of the fruity, spicy Belgian yeast of a tripel. While I enjoy the smell, it is my affinity for bourbon, not tripels, that is piqued.

Taste, while plenty of bourbon, is better integrated with the base tripel then the draught I was pouring at a beer festival this summer (and had plenty of samples of). Still, even with a few more months age, this tastes more to me like a tripel with a shot of bourbon in it then anything else. And that's not all bad, particularly since I love tripels and bourbon is pretty much the only booze I'll drink. Still, it's a bit heavy-handed, and I think they'll need to count on time to afford them the experience to tweak the formula more appropriately. The fusels are just too strong, in spite of the effect of the bourbon smell/taste. This would probably be much better at 9% then 11%. I do, however, appreciate the 'woodiness', a bit like the cedar 'taste' of a humidor, as well as the tinge of honey.

In spite of the thin head and viscosity of the booze, the mouthfeel is ceramy, with a medium body.

Drinkability is above average, but this is a very robust and boozy tripel that begets respect. But there's not denying it's addictiveness...in spite of the fact that every time I've had this, I've been less then impressed, taking my time with the whole bottle has lead me to really want to milk those last few ml...

750ml corked & caged bottle, $15.99 at BevMo, Natomas, Sacramento.

Appearance: Hazy yellow to orange, with active, visible carbonation. Dense, slightly rocky off-white head with lots of lacing.

Aroma: Lemon, sugar, yeast, spicy esters. A little bit of aluminum and flatness detected.

Taste: Deep fruity and spicy esters, lemon. Starting about midway through, a big, sweet deep bourbon flavor, which continues through the finish and lingers for a bit. Notes of other fruit are there, but I can't really say what. The Belgian yeast isn't very pronounced, and as a tripel, it's fairly average.

Mouth: Crisp and warm, but not particularly hot, especially given the high alcohol content. Lingers long, with a crisp carbonation.

Overall: A very tasty, very pleasant beer, but absolutely not worth the $16. I can get equal and better beers in 22 ounce bombers for half of the price. I guess I feel like the base tripel is somewhat thin and lacking of character, and the bourbon aging is all that makes it interesting. Easy to drink, but for a beer which should be exploding with character and depth and interesting flavors, it's, well, not. I'm glad I tasted it once, but definitely wouldn't pay for it again.

On tap at the Brick Store. Served in a chalice. Nice golden hazy orange, with a lacy white head, and lots of carbonation streamers sending bubbles throughout. Nose is deliciously spicy, like hops and curry sauce, with a bit of a barn/hay smell interlaced. Taste is quite good, with a slightly honey sweetness, very mild hops, and alcohol coming through on the end. Mouthfeel and drinkability are both good, despite the dangerous 11% ABV. Another nice brew from Allagash!

This is what happiness taste like. Your first kiss, first car, first puppy all placed in the form of one outstanding brew.

The moment you begin your pour the aroma lightly starts to come your way. Slowly, anxiously it taunts you saying "Yes, I taste even better than I smell". Appearance is the same as the triple.
There is some head...yada yada..move on...

Taste, have I mention this is outstanding yet? Smooth as velvet. The hint of oak sticks to the front of the tounge while the smallest bite of whiskey hits the sides. Then the yeast, fruits and spices finish on the back of the tounge. This all fits together so well some would say it's like Larry & Balki.... Perfect Strangers brought together for hours of unending entertainment. Thank you....

Finishes with just the slightest alcohol bite but is WAY too drinkable. Enjoy!!!

This is amazing.
May 2007 batch.
A cloudy golden orange fills the glass and is topped with a half finger of densely packed white bubbles that melt to a sticky ring.

Aroma is definitely Belgium Triple with bready, biscuit yeast and soft tropical fruits but it gets quickly buried by the vanilla oak, bourbon and strong alcohol. Don't get me wrong...the aroma is delicious.

Taste is solidly Belguim again....lots of soft tropical fruit, candied sugars and a biscuit bready yeast with lots of strong alcohol warmth and flavors in the end but it is all melded and mellowed by the oak tones that the aging has given it. And then of course is that delicious bourbon undertone to it all.

I love barrel aged beers.
I love the oak aromas.
I love bourbon.
I love an honest Triple.
I love this brew.

I had this at the Lunar Brewery in Villa Park, Illinois outside of Chicago. Golden in color and slightly cloudy. Light fruity aroma with a hint of wood or oak. Bourbon/whiskey in flavor with a sugary taste as well. Alcohol is not overpowering. Amazing beer.

Large corked and caged. Bottled June 2007.
Poured into a goblet.

Bright golden, at times almost orange, but still somewhat opaque and even a little bit turbid, despite being on the cellar for 3 months and being poured slowly. Head is a foamy white, that dissipates quickly likely because of its high ABV, but laces the top of the beer and sides of the glass all the way down.
Peculiar aroma, fruity, yeasty, even some bananas and oranges, minimal oak and vanilla.
Creamy on the palate, it is suprisingly smooth and easy to drink, with just some hints of bourbon/acohol, mostly just its warmth.
It is lightly sweet and fruity again, yeasty, malted, spiced, with some dryness to round it up, but little bitterness.
Quite impressive, I wish I had more to age.

Second bottle, bottled June 2008

This one had more bourbon and oak notes; less complexity; more citric notes. Appearance is also a bit different as lacing was not as pronounced.
There is a clear consistency problem here, as I rated my initial bottle very high, and was quite disappointed by the second one.

The 11 percent alcohol and oak-laced flavors make this trippel unique. It pours a pale golden, but still slightly ruddy, color, with a thick white head. The aroma is all oak. Classic Belgiany trippel flavor up front, with notes of honey, whiskey, and oak throughout,and an alcohol-warmed aftertaste. The mouthfeel is very thin, and that's not normally a plus for me, but the experience is bolstered by that intense alcohol presence and the oak, so I'd call it "delicate but earthy." Nothing else quite like this out there, and along with another entry in this Allagash line (the Musette) these ales could obsolete wine as far as I'm concerned.
