Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Odyssey is a dark wheat beer aged for ten months, a portion in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless tanks. The recipe includes 2-row barley, malted wheat, a generous amount of roasted barley and Belgian candi sugar. This deep brown beer boasts an aroma of black treacle and raisin. The flavor hints at dates, with a mildly roasted finish imparted by aging in both medium and heavy toast American Oak barrels. The finish is dry, punctuated by vanilla.

The beer pours a decent brownish tan head that dissipates fairly quickly but still leaves enough of a creamy covering over the beer. The beer itself is an opaque dark purple brown color and leaves quite a bit of lacing on the glass. The beer smell has very strong wheat and barley smell that overtakes the other smells. The smell also has dark fruits and Belgian candi sugar notes underneath the malts. The barely smells a little burnt. The taste has the same notes as the smell but with a different intensity. The Belgian candy sugar and dark raisin notes dominate the taste while the barely shows up to take off the edge a little bit. The mouthfeel is heavy bodied with biting carbonation. The feel is slick. Overall, a pretty god beer and worth getting.

The aroma has roasted malt, chocolate, sweet caramel, and cffee.

The flavor follows of chocolate, porter roasted malt quality, and then plums and a yeast. A lacking mid palate then onto an oak quality.

The beer is quite sweet and bready, but dries off on the finish with woody oak barrel.

2014 Vintage. Dark brown, chestnut even, with mahogany highlights. A really nice-looking head with great persistence, leaving some almost equally nice lacing. Aroma is a match for the best Belgian quads, and it has some interesting differences. The wheat is definitely detectable, smelling a bit like a Weizenbock. Hints of clove and banana. Besides that, there's a whiff of cocoa, then it segues into ripe raisin and date. Top it all off with oaky vanilla. An intricate aroma.

The flavor is almost equally complex. Robust, malty, not that sweet. The flavor profile stays mostly true to Quad/BSDA, the wheat character being quite muted. Dark malts and dark fruits are dominant. More fruity esters and a touch more sweetness would take this to next level. Slightly sticky, throat-coating mouthfeel. Carbonation is almost pillowy-soft. Some oak and just a hint of alcohol on the finish.

Allagash Odyssey is great, much better than "Four." This is, for all intents and purposes, a Quad. Not quite as good overall as the Trappist titans, but it holds it's own.
