Belgian Strong Pale Ale |  9.00% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
Victoria Ale was inspired by a visit to Victoria Mansion, in Portland, Maine and the visual references to Bacchus, the god of wine. The brewer's decided to fuse the worlds of beer and wine. Over two hundred pounds of Chardonnay (Vidal Blanc in 2010) grapes were brought in, crushed on site and added directly to the mash. Victoria Ale's aroma is fruity spice, and the taste presents subtle notes of green banana, black pepper, and fresh-crushed mint. With a focus on the subtle, wine-like character of the grapes, the 9.0% ABV brew boasts a pale copper color, Belgian yeast influence, and a medium body with a long candied fruit finish with hints of honeydew melon, and, of course, white wine grapes.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a shade of gold with a white head. Nose brings some wood, spice, grape, and some stone fruits. The taste is quite taken over by the grapes, taking away some of the nose's nuances. Feel is somewhat dry. Drinks okay, but like with the Victor, I think the grapes ended up being too large a component in the beer.

2013 vintage. Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer is a slightly hazed, bright orange-gold coloring with a thin, whispy, filmy coating on the surface. Some slow carbonation throughout the body present while you drink. Aromas of toasted grains, sweet and tart grape, and some berry sweet and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast. Flavors are light and effervescent from the crisp body and carbonation. Toasty grain backbone with white wine characteristics, both in dry sweetness and booze kick. Like a dry Pinot Gris. Some of the funky character from the yeast shines through, but not much. Pretty well balanced palate, maybe slightly leaning to the dry side. The aftertaste also has the wine-like feel, with a dry, fruity grist flavoring. Dry and smooth finish, with a slight sweet and tart linger. Interesting and unique beer.

Pours a very mead-lookin' nearly still dingy dull orange. Head dies faster than a snickers bar in death valley.

I'm getting a lot of yeast in the nose, vitamin B and tang, with layered notes of honey and white grapes. There's alcohol heat and a pleasing floral scent here - let it sit for a while and the yeasty smell fades a little and it opens up. Not awfully complex, but good.

Tastes quite grape-y, white wine and sulfur yeast mingle with your basic mellow Belgian golden ale. Lots of honey and pears, pepper, mild apple tartness. The yeast is still a little overpowering here and sits in the finish a tad too long. Overall it's a pleasing mellow flavor if you can get past the yeast funk.

Mouthfeel is finely carbonated and slick, the finish is heavy on the white grapes and a little boozy-sweet. Not too shabby.

This is a good beer, but the yeast character overpowers a lot of budding nuance. Worth a try, now I've got to get some Victor!

Pours a hazy gold color, with a thick head, and forms a blanket. Little lacing, but pretty to look at.

Aroma is almost non-existant. Slightly belgian triple nose, but very faint.

Flavor is very odd, but quite enjoyable. Somewhat wheaty, somewhat vinous, but very well balanced. Oaky, vanilla flavored finish. Smooth

Mouthfeel is full, and drinkability is good.

This is one incredibly complex brew. Lots of things going on here.... take time to appreciate and savor it.

Pours a hazy golden color with a small head that settled into nothingness, flat. The aroma is sweet, apricot, coriander, honey and green apple. The taste is of tropical fruit and coriander. Big spice profile, perhaps some white pepper. Some honey notes as well. I don't really pick up the white grapes as I did on the Victor. The brew has a moderate body, prickly carbonation, sweet and a bit sticky. A spicy BSPA for sure. Not really my bag but others might like it. I preferred the Victor over the Victoria.

A - Hazy, but bright marigold body. Fluffy white head has moderate retention and nice lace.

S - Grass, tart grapes, green olives, light wood, plantains, peach.

T - Wood, strong acrid grape skin notes, tannins, brine, dry peach.

M - Creamy, medium-full body.

O - Well crafted, but with a strange, somewhat ambivalent flavor profile.
