Belgian Strong Pale Ale |  9.00% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
Victoria Ale was inspired by a visit to Victoria Mansion, in Portland, Maine and the visual references to Bacchus, the god of wine. The brewer's decided to fuse the worlds of beer and wine. Over two hundred pounds of Chardonnay (Vidal Blanc in 2010) grapes were brought in, crushed on site and added directly to the mash. Victoria Ale's aroma is fruity spice, and the taste presents subtle notes of green banana, black pepper, and fresh-crushed mint. With a focus on the subtle, wine-like character of the grapes, the 9.0% ABV brew boasts a pale copper color, Belgian yeast influence, and a medium body with a long candied fruit finish with hints of honeydew melon, and, of course, white wine grapes.

2012 vintage. 750 ml brown glass bottle with hood and wire cap over a cork acquired at a Whole Foods in Pasadena and served into a Uinta brewing pilsener glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery, though Interlude did disappoint me recently.

Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

Paired with an almond croissant.

A satisfying pop accompanied the opening.

A: Pours a three finger head of beige colour, fair cream, okay thickness, and good retention considering the high ABV. Colour is a semitransparent yellow. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Fresh biscuity yeast, clean malts, pleasant floral hopping, light lemon, and some cream. A mild strength aroma.

T: Honey, some cream, a clean malt foundation, floral hops, some light citrus hop character, light lemon, biscuity yeast, clove, and clean barley. Not as complex or subtle as expected. Allagash ought to do better, but I do like it. It's good, but it's far from great. Balanced but underwhelming.

Mf: Smooth and wet. The smoothness in particular really aids the flavour profile. Good thickness, but not ideal. Adequate carbonation. Moderate on the palate.

Dr: Drinkable and enjoyable, but not quite the quality I've come to expect of Allagash. This is far from their best brew. I like it, but it isn't great. Age might help it a little, but won't really upscale it. It's quite pricey for what it is.

First had: on tap at Teresa's, Wayne, PA

Leftovers from an Allagash event apparently. Copper-amber color, thick white head that receded to a ringlet, leaving a bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma of white grapes, light lemony zest, pale malts. Elements of the aroma appeared in the taste naturally, white wine, bready pale malts, pithy citrus, apple skins, subtly tart, and a touch of peppery spice. Medium body, slightly chewy, decent and quite drinkable, but a bit bland overall.

To me, this came off almost as an attempt of cloning or at least imitating a Temptation or Damnation, and while decent in its own right, it wasn't nearly as good as those two.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a snifter type glass.

A: Golden liquid with a beautiful hue of orange, layered by a robust but short-lived head of white. Lacing is minimal to non-existant, while the head fades into a tiny collar.

S: Soft fruit is the first scent, white grapes for sure. A touch of citrus, and a nice yeasty funk. Really mild overall, and on the simple side

T: A delicate fruit sweetness is twisted into that golden tripel flavor. The light sweetness is funny in that it is not a strong flavor, but still manages to dominate the palate. Very mild spice flavor, mixed with the classic Allagash yeast flavor.

M: Silky smooth medium body, coating the tounge nicely until it moves down and leaves behind a sharp tingle of strong carbonation.

O: Delicious. Interesting and complex, with a simple dominating chardonnay grape presence. Pairs amazingly with cheese. I took home 5 bottles from the brewery, so you can say I like it!

Reviewed from notes. The beer pours an orange color with a large white head. The aroma is heavy on the white wine notes, with some nice orange and other tropical fruit notes coming through. The flavor is more of the same. I get some biscuit and wheat notes, as well as some orange and chardonnay grape notes. There is a lot of fruit in the beer, and a decent amount of sweetness and Belgian yeast. The alcohol is well hidden. Medium mouthfeel and high carbonation.

On tap at Busy Bee in Raleigh

A - copperish yellow; no head

S - winy, buttery

T - winy, buttery, a bit bitter, white grapes

M - viscous, smooth, warm, little carbonation

This definitely leans more towards the wine side but is a solid offering nonetheless. If you're a white wine fan this is for you.

Pours a hazed yello straw, light bubbly head, little spots of retention. Scent leads with a sweet and tart fruit component, biscuity malt, some herbal and earthy qualities. Taste tones down the fruit a bit and focuses it more on the grape notes, decent grain profile, some leafy and herbal notes. Medium bodied, lightly bubbly. Slightly better than the Victor as it tones some bold flavors down and blends them well.

750ml bottle served in a snifter glass.
2009 vintage.

pours a mostly translucent (there is a touch of haze) golden yellow, yields a solid finger-plus creamy white/off-white head; retention is decent, lacing is good. overall a solid presentation.

nose offers a mishmash of fruity notes: grape, lemon, apple, maybe peach... spice... vinous with a touch of oak. good aroma. taste follows nicely. again, 'vinous' is the operative word with this one; i think it works well. more spice and fruity notes... a bit of hops in the finish. alcohol presence is virtually non-existent. very enjoyable.

medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation. drinks easily at the outset but the grapes tend to wear on you after a while.

On tap for Allagash night at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a hazy yellow with an off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain and some light jelly/jam fruity aromas. Taste is the same with some herbal flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it smells better than it tastes in my opinion.
