This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Brewed with Belgian Pilsner Malt and 25% Rye malt, the beer is full-bodied with a spicy, herbal taste. A floral note arises with the addition of Yarrow, which is a flowering plant that was historically used as an alternative to hops. The beer is hopped with Warrior and Brewers Gold which impart a subtle bitterness.

The 07 Allagash fluxus poured a deep golden color with a nice but not substantial head. Great lacing on top of he glass. It smells and tastes like a tripel with a slightly herbaceous twist. Very drinkable for 10%. Aged very well I look forward to my next botle.

A bit of extreme brewing going on here. We are staring at a bottle of Belgian Strong Pale that has a grain bill of 25-percent rye malt (holy crap!!) and is also brewed with yarrow, which is an herb that predates hops in flavoring beer. The aroma is bursting with spicy rye, the fruity alcohol of apricot and star fruit and some bittersweet yarrow. The smoothness was granted by the beer god, amazing. Chewy medium body. Maltiness comes off a little sweet and creamy then quickly turns biscuity and spicy. The alcohol is very prevalent but not pushy, with a warming wave of black pepper and a mild tropical fruitiness. Medicinal phenols set in as well as the bittersweet yarrow balances out the maltiness and fruitiness. Yeast, residual malt, phenol and yarrow are all present in a very complex semidry finish.

Absolutely delicious, complex enough to pair with the most pungent of cheeses, yet still approachable enough to drink on its own.

This is an interesting beer, unlike any others I've tried. I can only guess that the rye malt and yarrow are what make it so unique. I had a 750ml bottle, poured into a tulip glass. The beer tastes better on the warmer side of cold. It's an orange color with a medium head. Aroma is spicy candy, but also a little earthy. The taste is like cotton candy upfront, then becomes sage-like, and finishes with a little sour kick. It's light, dry, and a lot of fun to drink.

Cloudy sugary peach colour. Lace in glass. Malty herbal aroma. Medium mouth feel. Woody spicey taste,licorice and other herbal favorites with woody finish. Subtle hop, on purpose. Active carbonation.More of these with the hop shortage? A little too sweet and lie a herbal tea concotion.

A 750 mL corked and capped bottle with the telltale Capone's price tag still on it.

A: The ale opened with a pop but unlike some other Allagash beers (thank you, Hugh Malone) it did not erupt all over the place. The ale is a hazy amber color, nicely apportioned between orange and brown. A marmalade orange is noticeable when light is focused on the glass.

S: The nose has the distinct Allagash yeast strain, dry with a fruity finish. The yarrow presence is a further fruity with an anise-like finish.

T: Fantastically complex taste, many flavors pop up throughout the glass. The Allagash yeast rears its head, dry with an apricot element. The ale has an herbal undertone, punctuated with a blast of anise and coriander. The anise and yeast conspire to create a chalky finish that reminds me of eating dandelion heads.

M: The ale is very noisy, a lot goes on within one glass of it. In light of the complexity of most of Allagash's offerings, this could be one of the more accessible brews that they make.

D: The alcohol is well hidden amongst the yarrow and malts. I've been sipping on this bottle for almost 3 hours now and it has been a very enjoyable epoch.

Bottle courtesy of Unclemattie: Poured a deep orangey/beige color ale with a large foamy head with great retention and some lacing. Aroma comprised a spicy yeast note with some spices mix and deep Belgian malt. Taste consisted in full Belgian malt with some sweet notes which were well balance with spicy yeast notes and some nice spices mix. Full body with some great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very good overall but there seams to be lacking something in here.

750ml bottle, corked and caged that was purchased at Whole Foods a while back. Decanted into an oversized wine glass and consumed on 07/27/2008.

I had this one sitting in the fridge for a good long while before I decided to open it up and see what it was all about. Let it warm up a touch before decanting, producing a honey gold colored liquid, with a good amount of haze to it. Some light carbonation could be seen coming up from the bottom of the glass as well. A good sized head of perhaps two inches settled down very nicely into a thin layer across the top which hung around until the end of the session, pretty darn good look after all.

The aroma was light, full of grain and light yeast notes. Hints of pear, and apple were the dominant force here, quickly followed by a nice touch of spice and an almost bread like malt tone, really interesting. The flavor though went way down hill for me. I was under impressed, after all I had high hopes for this one. Started out decent, albeit light, with a good touch of spice in it. Yarrow had a weird taste, almost like carrot to me or something, but rest assured it did not help at all. Light fruits, pears mostly and touches of apples were all over this one. Good Mouthfeel, light with decent carbonation. Weird finish left me looking for something to drink, just not really sure it was that I was looking for.

Overall I don't know about this one. I had some big expectations, but it just did not wow me in any way, in fact it did the opposite, still though better then most of the brews out there, I just could not see myself getting this one again.

A: golden yellow with just a hint of carbonation.
S: very nice Yarrow spice and sweetness, maybe a little fruity undertones.
T: creamy and slightly sweet with some flower characteristics adding to the smoothness.
M/O: very nice change of pace. Overall I would have liked a little more carbonation on the mouth, but for 4 years old, an excellent beer.

750ml. In my ommegang 10th anniversary glass. First serving of the night.

A: Cork pops gently. No foaming. Pours slightly hazy, just a couple shades lighter than aber. Head is fluffy, with some bigger bubbles on the sides. About 1.5" with decent retention.

S: Sugar daddies, maybe a little mustard, initially a peppercorn or seasoned meat note that really sticks itself out there--lamb or something? Very unique and very complex. This one smells pretty amazing.

T/M/D: Rich and a little cloying, even in the finish (!) but definitely not bad--they should consider smaller bottles of this one. It's a little syrupy, and the yarrow seems to actually make the alcohol more noticeable, and its scent dominates the start of each sip--very interesting. This one actually seems like a good candidate to match to a lot of foods.

Overall, highly recommended merely for the uniqueness factor. This one is worth trying. Congrats to Allagash on a new brewery. I will continue to try their tribute and barrel aged lines, but I wish they'd make some darker brews.

Pours a very cloudy golden/orange color. Decent head.

Smell is quite floral with a strong backing of yeast. A sweet smelling beer, not quite sure what yarrow smells like but I'm sure it adds to the flowery aroma.

Fairly sweet tasting, the malt upfront but the spice of the beer soon overtakes the entire mouth and leaves some sourness at the end, strong crisp taste throughout with a good amount of carbonation.

L: Pours a nice golden color with a medium sized and medium bodied white colored head that fades pretty fast.
S: Smells of very sweet wheat malts, some spicy belgian yeast aromas and a hint of ginger.
T: Very well balanced taste with not too much yeast flavoring followed by a slight ginger taste at the end.
M: Very crisp, fresh, and refreshing with a nice amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable beer and would definately recommend. I couldn't detect the amount of alcohol in it either, it didn't taste/feel anything like a 10% beer.

Damn you Allagash for always getting me so wet....

this vondervul brew pours a nice gold color with a nice big white head....the nose of coriander and lemon....the taste is lemons, herbs, like a good Witbier....I only got a sample of this beer but when I have 25 bucks to kill on this brew, I'll get my own bottle and review it to the fullest

so I'm in Portland ME for a work trip and I stop at my usual beer store. Lo and behold a new Allagash beer. I picked up a couple of bottles to see what the latest creation is all about.

A - Pours a cloudy amber color with with a huge billow white head. Bubbles gush up the side of the glass on this one in massive waves.
S - classic Allagash house yeast notes with a spicy note and an inviting aroma not typically noted in the usual spices I've tried with other beers. Hard to describe beyond that.
T - nice classic sweet belgian malts / candi sugars intersperced with a peppery / tropical fruit / bannana essence. Says there's rye in the mix but it's really woven in so smooth I'm not picking it up as a major player.
M - full bodied, highly carbonated. Served at cellar temp and allowed to warm up to room temp over the course of the drink. Initially it's a bit sharp and not as quaffable as I'm used to from Allagash. Around mid bottle and warmer serving temps this beer becomes mellow, creamy smooth and wonderful to sip.
D - One is plenty in a sitting or sharing with friends. Definitely one to let breathe and warm up some to enjoy fully.

I'm intrigued enough from the first one that I am looking forward to trying this again and setting a few in the cellar to see what it does over a year or so.

From a cork-finished bottle which indicates that this is a Belgian ale brewed with rye malt and yarrow. This generally fits the profile of a Belgian strong pale ale. Pours a cloudy, lighter amber color with some dirty gold highlights and a thick off-white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. The nose has some nice complexities to it, with spices and phenols playing together, backed by that sharp fruitiness that a lot of the Allagash beers possess. White glue (Allagash yeast combined with rye?), quince and rising dough round things out. On the palate, sharp fruit flavors straight off, along with some nice acidity. Doughy notes combine with rye spiciness and some raw alcohol to create an impression that is at once earthy and vibrant. Some sweetness at the mid-palate that seems partially due to the ABV, along with more acidity on the sides of the tongue and then a spicy, hot finish. Mouthfeel is characterized by big carbonation, hot alcohol and rough, spicy flavors. It's not an easy drinking beer.

Overall, this is a fine Belgian ale. It's got some nice complexities, with the rye adding quite a bit to the brew. The yarrow is a bit lost on me, probably because I'm unfamiliar with it in general. This beer has balance, depth and some unique flavors. It never approaches the heights of some of the other Allagash special brews (notably Odyssey, Interlude, and early Curieux), but it's a good beer in its own right. Definitely worth a try.

Cage-corked 750 ml bottle, poured slowly into a wide-mouth glass:

Pours hazed golden with a thin, lasting, off-white head. Some lacing sticks.

The smell is grainy and grassy with herbal notes (that would be the yarrow, I assume - can't say I would be able to pinpoint yarrow, as I don't think I've smelled it before - but I'll take the strong herbal notes to be that.)

The taste is of sweet grain and candy balanced by grassy and herbal (almost medicinal) bitterness/spicing. It has a boozy kick in the dry finish.

The light-to-medium body is very creamy.

This is a slow sipper - alcohol, while being reasonably well-covered for the 10% abv, is still quite sharp. Sweet and herbal. Can't really say that I would get it again, as the price is pretty steep for what it is, IMO. But, it was very nice to try it once.

pour a bit syrupy. it's mildly hazed amber/gold, with a moderately sized white head.
the aroma is spicy, flowery and peppery, and very intriguing. once you get past the powdery spiciness, which i'm thinking must be yarrow, you find some banana-y cotton candy and candi sugar type aromas. a touch of vanilla.
the tatse is very unique with a hefty dose of that yarrow flavor, which is a very herbal floral flavor. hard to describe beyond that. this seems to be quite sweet, but it is balanced by the spicing, and maybe some hop bitterness? it's hard to tell but it seems like there might be some noble hops in here. i think i taste some sage. it's a little hot, but not distractingly so. white pepper mingles with some of the yeasty breadiness and lighter fruitiness... vanilla banana, creamy orange. overall this beer has a very savory quality about it that is very unique and very good. reminds me almost of a good turkey gravy. speaking of which this would probably make a good thanksgiving pairing.
the body is very full with soft carbonation. a bit on the thick side, but it doesn't impede things too much.
decent drinkability, it can be a little much especially in the body dept. but all in all it's big on unique flavor, while keeping itself in check, and thats what it's all about (usually).

pours hazy orange with a fluffy off-white head. the head drops slowly and leaves tons of lace behind.

aroma is nice. light alcohol. light and tropical fruits - mango, peach, bit of apricot. white bread. cracker. touch of grain. hint of pine and grapefruit. floral.

taste is good. fairly low bitterness level. orange peel. bit of grapefruit. tangerine. wheat bread and cracker. touch of biscuit. alcohol. there's that bit of tropical fruit too, but more subdued than in the aroma. nice spiced component too - cardamom and an herbal almost minty character.

mouthfeel is good. just under medium body with just above medium carbonation level.

drinkability is nice. the alcohol is a bit warm, more than i expected, but the larger than average malt profile helps balance it. the herbal and minty character was unexpected but it worked for me.

Poured into a wide-mouthed snifter. Hazy blood orange with a smallish white head that quickly dissipates leaving a nice ring.
Lemongrass on the aroma, some rock candy, orange blossom honey.
Coriander and fragrant spice immediately noted. Big malt to balance the spice. Subtle lemon and orange. A lot of spice actually. Bitter on the backend, dry. Perfect carbonation.

Alcohol very well hidden.

This is another good solid beer from Allagash, but I have to say it really doesn't stand out in comparison to their other great beers.

On tap at Mahaffey's the other day.

The beer pours a hazy honey gold color with good head retention and lacing. It looks nice enough, but is nothing out of the ordinairy. The nose on this beer is more of the same. I get some light honey, cherry and vanilla, pretty much exactly what I would expect from an oak aged belgian style strong ale. The beer is also pretty nice tasting, with the flavors on the palate replicating the nose. The beer is not as rich and complex as some Allagash beers I've had, but this is still a very nice tasting beer with a light to medium bodied mouthfeel. The beer is moderately sweet and drinkability is pretty good for its abv.

A solid beer from Allagash, but it didn't wow me. Have been drinking a fair amount of the curieux on tap here in Baltimore lately, and IMO this beer is not in the same league with the curieux. Still a good enough beer I suppose....
