Deep black like the label suggests. Two-finger thick head. Very creamy looking.
Scents of dark cocoa, coffee, along with hints of anise, yeast, and a velvety sweetness.
Nice bitter espresso flavors upfront. Notes of dry cocoa powder. Develops hints of dark fruity black currant in the background along with a brief refreshing sweetness. A good amount of bitterness in the middle balances the sweetness of the roasted malts in this beer. Finish toggles between dry dark chocolate and mildly sweet hints of anise.
Extremely smooth with low carbonation.
An extremely dark and complex stout. Great for sipping over an extended period of time. There were also some fleeting floral herb notes in this beer, but I could not pinpoint at which stage I was tasting them. It's a very fine offering from Allagash. Recommend.
