Belgian Strong Dark Ale |  7.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Allagash Black is a Belgian style stout brewed with 2 Row barley, torrified wheat, oats, both roasted and chocolate malt and a generous portion of dark caramelized candi sugar. The silky mouth feel is a great balance to the roasted character, coffee and dark chocolate notes expressed throughout this beer.

A - Super dark, opaque, black ale. Thin but lively dark cream-colored head with reasonable retention, and a solid field of lacing once it warms.

S - Chocolate with a hint of grape and alcohol. Burnt coffee.

T - The Belgian sweetness is noticeable and pleasant, but the dominant flavor is chocolate. Slight metallic taste, a bit of grape. As it warms, the chocolate fades a little bit, and some dark, fruity sweetness lingers more.

M - Full and creamy, but with a light tingle. The chocolate flavor is so dominant that it hides the alcohol.

O - I enjoyed this more than other stouts, if only because the chocolate is slightly less strong, and the sweetness is a welcome addition. I didn't enjoy the metallic taste, and I'm hoping that was an aberration in this bottle.

Allagash Brewing Company - Allagash Black, poured into a Lawson's tulip.

Look - Pours a jet black but not oil thick, it becomes more see through the less liquid is in the glass. Sports a small soapy head that dissipates at a medium pace. Minimal lacing.

Smell - Roasted malts, some chocolate and coffee, almost meaty barley. Sourdough is there faint in the back. Some cola aroma.

Taste - Full, rich, carbonated, and roasted coffee and chocolate. Slight sour Belgian yeast takes up the rear, bready oats and grains rest at the end, think Cheerios.

Mouthfeel - Moderate carbonation and medium to full-bodied. Booze level is where it should be. Good drinkability. Slightly sticky. Slight spiciness.

Overall - Interesting blend, while it didn't "wow" me it definitely is Allagash caliber. I personally would not revisit this one but fans of "Belgian Stouts" may find it has what they are looking for and should give it a shot.

A - Well it's not a very deep stout but a fairly deep shade of brown. Head is a full inch of opaque colored sticky with some great sticky lacing.
S - Well I can smell the Belgium yeast its very fruity but not very much else maybe some plum or raisin or chocolate malt. Hope it taste balanced.
T - Well it's a pretty smooth Belgium strong ale, mild chocolate malts and dry yeast aside it has some fruity plum, raisin, and figs.
M - Well it drinks with a medium body as expected for the style not much ABV flavor which is great.

Overall a very drinkable Belgium ale but not the stout I expected. Still they do make great ales but I am not sure this is worth 4 dollars a pop.

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice beige head that dies down moderately and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of Belgian yeast, roasted malts, caramel, chocolate/coffee and dark fruit.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has alot of roasted malts, sweet caramel, some chocolate/coffee, some dark fruit and bready yeast.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.
